News Roundup: 90210, Dawson’s Creek and The O.C.

7 01 2010
  • Ryan O’Neal has been cast as Spence Montgomery, father to Teddy (Trevor Donovan). We’ve known for a while that we’d see Spence in upcoming episodes but this is the first casting announcement.
  • Tori Spelling (Donna, Beverly Hills 90210) is working on a new book, tentatively titled uncharted terriTORI and scheduled for release in June.
  • While researching something earlier, I came across this New York Times article from 2000, which was published shortly before Beverly Hills 90210 ended. On May 17, it will be 10 years since the series finale. (In September, it will be 20 years since the series premiere!)
  • Finding the above article reminded me of this one, which quoted me when I was all of 12 years old!
  • Beginning Monday, The CW will allow people to watch the first ten minutes of Life Unexpected, starring Shiri Appleby (Rene, Beverly Hills 90210) and Kerr Smith (Jack, Dawson’s Creek), on their Facebook Fan page.
  • CNN has an interesting article on The Beautiful Life, starring Mischa Barton (Marissa, The O.C.) being on YouTube.

I loved that New York Times article, but did you notice that on page 2 it says “90201”????? Seriously?? And from such a respected source, too, not just another magazine article. Disappointing!

Oh,and then it says at the bottom that they spelled “Shannen” with an “o” and used “Rebel With a Cause” instead of “Rebel Without a Cause”(Funny, becuase “Rebel with a cause” was the title of a “90210” epi! Oh, the irony). Someone was having an off day…

As a journalist, I’m always disappointed when I see careless errors like that, ones that should easily be taken care of by the fact-checker and copy editor. At the same time, as a journalist, I know how the eyes play tricks on you after a while and what it’s like to be short-staffed and/or pressed for time. I’m not trying to make an excuse for it because it really does bother me to no end, but on a practical level, I understand how it happens. But I’m a big believer that when archives are put online, they should be re-read another time. And since there were already errors in this article that they had caught (probably because a reader wrote in about it after the piece was initially published), it should’ve been a red flag, a sign that the piece should be re-read one more time just to be sure.

At any rate, I’ve typed 90201 many times. And lately I find myself adding an extra e to Beverly (Beverley). It’s odd. Sometimes when you do something so much each day, that’s when you start making a mistake.

I do see how papers can start look fuzzy when you read it late at night-I’ve done that many a time with school papers!-but it just bugs me. That’s actually why I joined my school newspaper as copy editor-the little mistakes like using “Finish” as the nationality (as in the last edition of the paper) annoy me to no end! But, alas, everyone makes mistakes. Including the New York Times. 🙂
