Teen Drama’s Best Episode Titles

8 06 2009

Almost all television series have creative titles for each of their episodes.  For the next few days, I’ll share with you some of my favorites from each of our beloved teen dramas.

BEVERLY HILLS, 90210

Shooting Star/American in Paris, Episode 3.5: Really like the first part, particularly because it applies to Kelly and Dylan, my all-time all-series favorite couple.

The Time Has Come Today, 4.25: A retro line very fitting of this 1960s flashback episode

Mr. Walsh Goes to Washington, 4.31-32: A clever and fitting play on a classic movie title.

The Dreams of Dylan McKay, 5.10: Probably the most accurate episode title ever.

Hate is Just a Four-Letter Word, 5.11: I like it because it’s not true, and that’s exactly the point of the episode.

Unreal World, 5.24.: Another clever and fitting play on another classic piece of pop culture.

The Real McCoy, 5.29: Same as above.

P.S., I Love You, 5.31-32: Isn’t this what we all long to hear?

One Wedding and a Funeral, 6.10: Yet another clever and fitting play on a classic movie title.  Also probably the saddest 90210 episode ever, even if the title gives the whole plot away.

The Way We Weren’t, 8.4: Anddddd another clever and fitting play on a movie title.  Are you sensing a theme here?

The Morning After, 9.1: Is there a better title for the episode after Kelly and Brandon’s failed wedding?  I think not.

Doc Martin, 10.17: A fitting tribute.

Ever Hear the One About the Exploding Father?, 10.20: Perfect given the episode’s plot and since it’s a nod to longtime fans.

The Penultimate, 10.27: What else do you call the second to last episode of a series?

Tomorrow, on to Dawson’s Creek!

RELEVANT QUESTIONS–DON’T READ IF YOU DON’T WANT TO KNOW!!!

Has there ever been an official explanation for why Dustin Milligan was cut from 90210? — Tony
MICKEY:
At the recent Paley Festival, new show-runner Rebecca Rand Kirshner said, “I was sort of stumped by [Ethan]. I didn’t feel like there was the longevity in that character that I wanted. And so it was a real loss.” Unofficially, I’m hearing that Ethan’s departure has paved the way for a new male lead of a very different stripe. More on him here.

News Roundup: Gossip Girl, 90210 and One Tree Hill

  • According to Access Hollywood, the new 90210 will bring back the Beverly Hills Beach Club, the setting for Beverly Hills 90210’s summer episodes.  (Note: The article inaccurately states that Dylan (Luke Perry) worked at the beach club.  He did not.)
  • In the June 8 issue of PEOPLE, Shenae Grimes (Annie, 90210 ) was criticized for a recent outfit.
  • In the same issue, Lindsay Price (Janet, Beverly Hills 90210) said her favorite ice cream flavor is chocolate chip cookie dough.
  • Joe Manganiello (Owen, One Tree Hill) says he’d “love” to come back to the show.

Breaking News: Brian Austin Green May Join OTH!

1 06 2009

Teen drama worlds are colliding again!

Beverly Hills 90210’s Brian Austin Green, who played David, may join One Tree Hill for its seventh season.

The Hollywood Reporter says he is in talks to play Clayton, the previously announced new character that will be Nathan’s agent.  EW’s Ausiello says “it’s virtually a done deal.”

I’ve been hoping BAG would pop up on the new 90210 to repair his relationship with Tori Spelling’s Donna.  I never imagined in my wildest dreams that he’d end up on a different teen drama!

Thoughts?!

RELEVANT QUESTIONS–DON’T READ IF YOU DON’T WANT TO KNOW!!!

Question: I keep hearing that the new 90210 show-runner isn’t planning on having any more characters from the original show on the reboot. Does that go for Jennie Garth, too? I can understand why having an old-school character pop up randomly just to boost ratings could get lame after a while, but Kelly is so integrated at this point they’d need to explain her absence if they weren’t going to have her back. It seems crazy to send her packing. Jennie Garth is the best thing about the new show. Thanks!—Nic

Matt Roush: My understanding from my in-house 90210 expert (I’m going on record as a first-season dropout) is that Jennie Garth is staying put. As you said, Kelly’s integral to the remake’s premise. What I guess you’ll see less of are the stunt drop-bys, and that’s probably a wise choice.

Teen Dramas: The Evaluation Results

1 06 2009

A huge thanks to everyone who voted in my evaluations. Part of my love for teen dramas comes from interacting with other viewers, and this was a great way for me to learn more about you guys.  Hope you all appreciated it as well.

Now on to the results…

Your favorite teen drama characters are Brooke Davis (One Tree Hill) and Lucas Scott (One Tree Hill).  While Brooke won with more than 60 percent of the vote and runner-up Blair (Gossip Girl) only got 30, Lucas was closely trailed by Chuck (Gossip Girl) with a 5 percent margin.

It was One Tree Hill versus Gossip Girl again in favorite couple, as Leyton beat Chuck and Blair by just 3 votes!

90210 scored its first–albeit, negative–win with Annie  and Ethan ranking as worst characters.

Worst couple was a super-close race with Vanessa and Nate (Gossip Girl) tying with Brooke and Owen (One Tree Hill).  90210’s Annie and Ethan were only behind by 3 votes!

One Tree Hill’s Jamie Scott and Karen Roe earned 66 and 59 percent of the votes for favorite supporting character and favorite returning character, respectively. They also won by a large margin.

Peyton’s pregnancy and relationship with Lucas was voted best storyline but Blair and Chuck’s relationship wasn’t far behind.

The Nanny Carrie storyline on One Tree Hill earned more than half of the votes for worst storyline.

While Adrianna’s overdose on 90210 and the Gossip Girl finale tied for second place in best cliff-hanger, the top spot went to Peyton’s pregnancy health scare(s) on One Tree Hill.

And, in the biggest margin out of all the categories, One Tree Hill won as your favorite teen drama overall with a whopping 73 percent of the vote.

Here’s how the shows stacked up: One Tree Hill–10 wins; Gossip Girl–1; 90210–1.  As you can see, One Tree Hill totally dominated!

It will be interesting to see if this changes next year, considering all the changes planned for One Tree Hill.

Feel free to comment on the results!
