The Top 10 Teen Drama Musical Guests

14 01 2009

Beginning as early as 1993 with Beverly Hills 90210, teen dramas have featured musical guests to drive up ratings or move a plot along. For the next 5 days, I’ll countdown the top 10 musical guests on Beverly Hills 90210, Dawson’s Creek, The O.C. and One Tree Hill.  90210 and Gossip Girl will not be included as they haven’t yet had any musical guests.

10.  Cathy Dennis (Beverly Hills 90210, Episode 3.27: A Night to Remember)

In these clips, you can see Dennis performing at the West Beverly prom.

9. Jem (The O.C., Episode 1.27: The Ties That Bind)

In the season one finale, Jem sings at Julie and Caleb’s wedding as Marissa and Ryan share a tear-filled dance.

News Roundup: One Tree Hill, Gossip Girl, 90210 and More

14 01 2009
  • OTH made EW’s Must List for the week.  See if you can spot the factual error!
  • More details have been released on Kelly Rutherford’s (Lily, Gossip Girl) impending divorce and why her husband blames the show.
  • Dawn Ostroff, in talking about CW viewers: “Our fans really love some of that heightened drama, as you can see when you watch ‘One Tree Hill’ and ‘Gossip Girl.‘ So the job is both: to get them emotionally invested in the people and then do storylines that have twists and turns and surprises you never expected.”
  • There’s another Jason Priestley (Brandon, Beverly Hills 90210) story, similar to the one we posted last night.
  • And another Jessica Lowdnes (Adrianna, 90210) story.
  • Blake Lively (Serena, Gossip Girl) is on the cover of Vogue.  Lively calls the GG fashion “unbelievable.”  You can read the whole interview here.  Another article, more about Vogue, though.
  • AnnaLynne McCord (Naomi, 90210) has some pretty steamy photos in the February issue of GQ.

Article: Jason Priestley Won’t Rule Out 90210 Appearance

13 01 2009

Could it be?  Kelly and Brandon together again?

Perhaps, perhaps not.

If you ask Priestley (Brandon, Beverly Hills 90210.), you’ll get this answer: “I never say never, right? If Gabe [Sachs] and Jeff [Judah] came up with something really interesting, then we’ll see what happens.”

That revelation and more is packed into yet another TCA Press Tour article.

Priestley says some interesting things…that I kind of take issue with.  For instance:

JP says he directed 18 episodes of the original.  Other sources have it at 15 or 16.  (Though he did produce–whatever that means–more than 100.)

Says the only continuity between the original and new series is Erin and Kelly.  Guess he forgot about his twin sis, Brenda!

Says the new 90210 is bigger than the original.  Maybe BH90210 wasn’t huge at first, but it definitely got big!

Says “the episode I’m directing is a big episode. It’s a very ambitious episode.”  WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?!

Says the new series needs to be its own show and too many old characters shouldn’t come back.  Are you kidding?  That’s all the show has going for it!

WHEW! Okay, done ranting.

(Maybe I’m being too knit-picky?)

Article: Ryan Eggold Interview

13 01 2009

In another great 90210 interview (which we’re getting thanks to the TCA Press Tour), Eggold (Ryan Matthews) reveals some interesting inside-info.  Here are the highlights:

Tori Spelling’s (Donna, Beverly Hills 9021o) return will be related to Silver.  Makes sense considering they’re related through marriage.  Brian Austin Green, where are you?!

The execs did consider making Ryan Harry and Tracy’s lovechild.

They also considered Ryan getting Brenda pregnant.

He’s got a very foul mouth.  Strange–I don’t remember that from when I interviewed him!

Article: Jessica Lowndes Says…

13 01 2009

…Adrianna’s baby is, essentially, saving her life.

How so you ask?  In the most in-depth interview (which was briefly mentioned in today’s roundup) I’ve seen with her, Lowndes says her character has been turning her life around–no more drugs, etc.–and being pregnant will keep her on the right track.

So, SPOILER ALERT, Adrianna will be keeping the baby.

My favorite part of the article is the way it starts: pointing out how Lowndes was barely on the press’ radar when the show began (and seemed to be going the Scott Scanlon route-aka dying prematurely and tragically) but has now carved out a name and character for herself.  And, so, I offer you another comparison: Lowndes’s path is very much like Luke Perry’s (Dylan, Beverly Hills 90210).  Perry joined the show as a guest-star with an unplanned/unforeseen future and soon became one of the best things about it.  Interesting, no?

Other tidbits from the article: Lowndes was 4 when the original started (I was 3!); Adrianna will beat Annie for the lead in an upcoming school play; and Lowndes still “pinches” herself when she’s around original cast members!

News Roundup: Gossip Girl, 90210, One Tree Hill

13 01 2009
  • Kelly Rutherford, whose divorce I first told you about here, went to the courts to stop her estranged husband from leaving the country with her son.  Unfortunately for her, the request was denied.  PEOPLE reports an increasingly ugly situation between the two.  Her husband alledges Rutherford’s work on Gossip Girl (Lily) is part of the problem.
  • Jessica Lowdnes (Adrianna, 90210) says she’s a series regular.  Haven’t seen it listed that way anywhere but guess we have to believe her?
  • CBS unveiled yesterday a new 90210 product: a karaoke machine!  I kid you not.  Check it out here and here.  Suppose I’ll add it to the recommended products list…?
  • If the last one wasn’t random enough, how about this one: Kate Voegele (Mia, One Tree Hill) will perform on an upcoming episode of The Bachelor.
  • Tori Spelling (Donna, Beverly Hills 90210) will be on a panel of “leading women” giving advice to advertisers on how to market to women.

News Roundup: 90210, Gossip Girl, Dawson’s Creek

12 01 2009
  • In the Jan. 19th issue of PEOPLE (also mentioned here), Anne Hathaway and Kate Hudson admit to being “total 90210 girls” and vaguely reference the 1991 Slumber Party episode.
  • Brian Austin Green (David, Beverly Hills 90210) did not accompany fiance Megan Fox to the Golden Globes.
  • Blake Lively (Serena, Gossip Girl) presented–and messed up!–at the Golden Globes.
  • Kerr Smith (Jack, Dawson’s Creek) has been cast in a new series on The CW called Light Years.  Smith will play the boyfriend of Shiri Appleby (Rene, Beverly Hills 90210) whose estranged daughter comes back into her life.

RELEVANT QUESTIONS–DON’T READ IF YOU DON’T WANT TO KNOW!!!

(compiled from recent columns)

Korbi, Is Tori Spelling really doing 90210?!! -Michelle
Donna Martin Graduates! The deal is done, baby. I spoke to a friend of hers who gave me the wink-wink when I asked.

Who is the father of Adrianna’s baby? Is it the HIV guy or someone we know? -P
Someone we know. Someone we haven’t seen in a while. Someone who’s super hot.

I cannot believe that Gossip Girl is doing this whole love child thing with Lily and Rufus. 90210, Brothers & Sisters, so many shows have already covered it! To death! -Jacqueline
I feel your pain, but I’m hearing GG may actually put its own little spin on the whole “bastard kid coming to town and turning everyone’s lives upside down” storyline. I know my pal Michael Ausiello at EW has said that the long-lost child will show up towards the end of the season, but as I understand, the original plan was for Rufus and Lily to find out that their first born son was killed in a tragic accident.

Korbi! I wanted to know if we were going to get any closure on Eden’s character from Nip/Tuck?  Thanks. -Marty
Yes, indeed. 90210 producers were kind enough to let AnnaLynne McCord finish filming her Nip/Tuck arc last Fall, so we should see Eden again soon.

Tell me there are more old 90210 characters coming back to the show. I want to see a familiar face. -Shannon
Well, if you’re hoping for Dylan McKay, don’t get hold your breath. But if you’re cool with seeing Jackie Taylor again, you can get excited. Word is, Kelly and Silver’s loony mom will soon make a return appearance.

YouTube Video of the Week

11 01 2009

Ever wonder how many times Brandon and Kelly (Beverly Hills, 90210) kissed?

See for yourself!

Diablo Cody to Guest-Star on 90210?

10 01 2009

That’s the rumor in Minneapolis’ City Pages.  I haven’t seen it anywhere else.

Cody (best known as the writer of Juno) frequently writes about her love for Beverly Hills, 90210 in her Entertainment Weekly column.

Will update if I find more info.
