YouTube Video of the Week

1 11 2009

This video just had me at a loss for words as it is just so random.

Rather than trying to describe it, I’ll just take the description that’s given:

“A unique Michael Jackson Tribute, Beverly Hills 90210 style. Michael Jackson’s life had it’s share of drama, not unlike the lives of Brandon Walsh, Brenda Walsh, Kelly Taylor, Dylan McCay, Steve Sanders, Donna Martin, David Silver, and Andrea Zuckerman. Michael Jackson will live on in our hearts as the greatest entertainer of all time, and he will truly be missed, especially by the cast and crew of Beverly Hills 90210. Rest in Peace 1958-2009.”

Exclusive: Randy Spelling on 90210’s Teen Drama Legacy

6 09 2009

Famous family aside, Randy Spelling made his own name for himself by playing not one but two (!) characters on Beverly Hills 90210.

In our exclusive interview, Randy reflects on growing up in the public eye and how acting remains in his heart, even after a career change.

TeenDramaWhore: On Beverly Hills 90210, you started off with a bit part in the season 3 summer episodes. You then transitioned to the character of Ryan, brother to Ian Ziering’s Steve. Who’s idea was it to change and expand role?

Randy Spelling: I started in 90210 playing Kenny, the assistant to Henry [James Pickens Jr.] at the Beverly Hills Beach Club.  My dad [Aaron Spelling] and sister [Tori Spelling] thought it would be fun for me to see if I liked acting or not.  Being 13 years old and in 8th grade, I got onto set and when I realized there was so much waiting around in between shots, I was so bored!!  I just wanted to be a kid and play, not wait around all day to say one line!  When I was actually serious about acting and had already been on another show for NBC called “Malibu Shores,” a part came up that was my age for Steve’s brother.  It was a natural fit and people weren’t too worried about anyone remembering me as Kenny, the geeky beach club assistant.

TDW: You appeared in less than 20 episodes but had some weighty storylines: dropping out of college, teen sex, family relationships, etc. One of the most memorable for me was the episode where your character got alcohol poisoning after drinking too much (Episode 6.26, Smashed). Do you have a favorite storyline or episode?

Spelling: I did have some weighty story lines in 90210.  That is what I loved about the show, because even though it was a soap-style primetime serial, 90210 really tried to address lots of issues that were and still are relevant to what kids go through.  I grew up watching 90120 and I learned some very important things from it.  I could never master the coolness of Dylan McKay [Luke Perry] though!   My favorite story line that I did was the one where I came home from school to visit Steve and Janet [Lindsay Price] and lied to them about how school was and what was really going on [ed. note: Episode 10.19, I Will Be Your Father Figure] .  I thought that in order to fit in and be accepted, I needed to do what was expected of me.  Ryan let the pressure get to him and he rebelled until, with Steve’s support, he went back to school [ed. note: Episode 10.20, Ever Hear The One About The Exploding Father?].  It was fun to transition from the little brother who always got told what to do into more of a man where I rebelled and made my own decisions.  It was also fun yelling at Ian!

TDW: You had very few scenes with your real-life sister, Tori.  Was this done purposefully?

Spelling: It wasn’t on purpose that my character didn’t have many scenes with my sister’s character, our story lines just didn’t cross that much.  It was really comfortable though when we were in scenes together.

TDW: You and Tori essentially grew up on the show, as it lasted for 10 years.  What is it like having that kind of record of your life?

Spelling: We did grow up for 10 years on the show, more for Tori than for me.  It is funny to have that record of your life on film.  But it is just like a song that you hear on the radio and it brings you back to a certain situation you were in.  When I think back to one of those episodes, it brings me back to where I was at the time.

TDW: Do you keep in touch with any of the cast?

Spelling: I do not keep in touch with any of the cast.  I was good friends with [Brian Austin Green, David].  We talk every once in a while; that is about it.

TDW: How do you think being on 90210 prepared you for your leading role on Sunset Beach?

Spelling: 90210 prepared me for my role on Sunset Beach only by watching the cast and their professionalism.  Working on a primetime series is so very different from daytime.  One is shot on film, one is shot on tape.  When I got used to doing daytime where we shot one episode, about 70 pages a day, it felt so slow to go back on 90210 where we did 7 pages a day!

TDW: Do you watch the new 90210?  What do you think your dad would say about it?

Spelling: I do not watch the new 90210.  I watched the first couple of episodes.  I liked it and I saw a lot of similarities to the old one, but much racier and current.  My dad would have liked it but I think he would be shocked at first about how much further they could take certain story lines and relationships then they did back in the first one.

TDW: What do you think is 90210’s legacy in the world of television and/or teen dramas?

Spelling: I think 90210 really paved the way for what a teen high school drama show is all about.  From high school, into college and then after, 90210 showed what it was like growing up and what a rite of passage was all about.  I was shocked when I heard they were remaking it.  I thought it was pretty remarkable considering BH 90210 just went of the air in 2000.  That is impressive and shows how popular it really was.

TDW: You made a massive career change.  How did that come about and why? Can you explain what exactly you do now?

Spelling: I now currently work as a life coach.  I grew up in an entertainment family and from early on, I figured that was all I could ever do.  I have always loved spirituality, psychology and the way that people work and function.  After my dad passed away, I looked around and realized that I wasn’t being fulfilled spiritually as much as I wanted to be.  Someone suggested life coaching.  I took a seminar to see if it was something I was interested in.  I figured, I will sign up for 2-year schooling, [and] even if I don’t become a life coach, the skills would be amazing to possess.  It is a rigorous self-exploration process as well.  In the midst of working with people, I realized how much I love working with other people, facilitating them to find happiness, peace and purpose as well as helping them shift certain things that were holding them back.  To be a part of someone else’s journey in this way and to reflect their light back unto them is what I am passionate about! I help empower people to find what it is that is in their heart.  If there are blocks or things holding them back, we identify them and move through them so they can be their full potential.  My coaching can help with relationships, career, life purpose, spirituality, feeling stuck, addiction, etc… You can find out more at  www.randyspelling.com.

TDW: Would you ever go back to acting?

Spelling: Acting is something that is in my heart and such a fun, creative outlet.  I will never close the door on acting because it is fun for me.  There is a possibility of seeing me on screen again, as long as it is something I am passionate about.  My philosophy is this:  If I feel passionate about something or if it sounds fun, then that is where I will gravitate towards.  These two things are my compass that guides me in life.

Come back this Tuesday at noon for a special exclusive, an interview with 90210’s newest cast member.

And don’t forget: 90210’s second season premieres Tuesday at 8pm eastern.  I’ll be live-blogging it!

RELEVANT QUESTIONS–DON’T READ IF YOU DON’T WANT TO KNOW!!!

Simon in Agoura Hills, Calif.: Any scoop on Southland?
(Not relevant until…) Southland definitely has more authentic L.A. than 90210, a lack of veracity that the new 90210 boss is now righteously trying to rectify. More on that coming in 90210 vids tomorrow.

Frannie in Orlando, Fla.: Does Dan ever get another heart on One Tree Hill?
Dan’s heart storyline is not resolved by the end of the season, so it looks like the bastard lives to fight another season! Can Dan even really be killed? He seems like one of those supersoldiers you can just shoot holes through and they keep getting up.

Catherine: What happened to the Blair/Jack Bass secret on Gossip Girl?
Blair did hook up with Jack Bass on New Year’s Eve, but when that info comes out, it barely makes a dent in the storyline. (Who else was hoping for a least a jealous freak-out from Chuck?)

Tina in British Columbia: Sooo excited about Gwen Stefani appearing on Gossip Girl!can you tell us anything more?
According to MTV.com, No Doubt will be appearing in the Lily episode as a band named—wait for it—Snowed Out. (Heee.) They’ll be doing a cover of Adam & the Ants‘ “Stand and Deliver.”

Gio: Your help is sought in finding missing person Jenny Humphrey, cute Brooklyn blonde. Not seen on Gossip Girl for weeks now. Will she be getting a storyline any time soon?
Negatory. Little J is overlooked once again. In the coming weeks every other storyline on the show takes precedence, except when J finally pops up in the finale—she has a key role to play in the coronation of the new queen mean girl. In the meantime, however, we always have your Taylor Momsen needs covered in Fashion Police.

Peggy in Santa Barbara, Calif.: Are any of the cast of 90210 heading for Melrose Place?
No one has been officially confirmed, but Rob Estes tells us, “My money’s on Ryan—he’d be a perfect crossover.” Who do you think should make the leap over to 90210‘s sister show?

Melanie in Del Mar, Calif.: What’s the deal with Dixon’s biomom coming on 90210?
Dixon’s (Tristan Wilds) biological mom does come back in the picture, which causes quiet the emotional meltdown with the family. And though the promos tease a big reunion, don’t expect it to be as special as they’re selling. Rob Estes tells us, “We may see [Dixons mom], but do we meet her? She shows up and then disappears for a while. They actually go after her…They go looking for her.”

Mitch in San Diego: I knew Dustin Milligan was leaving 90210, but now Silver? What’s going on?
Silver is leaving West Bev High, but Jessica Stroup is not leaving the show. That is, if her character doesn’t die in the season finale.

Dyan in Queens, N.Y.: More Matt Lanter on 90210 please!
Liam’s causing some drama and really turning into the Dylan McKay we’ve been waiting for. Matt Lanter says, “Liam takes out Ethan to a camping trip. Ethan’s trying to find himself and Liam encourages that from people, trying to find what’s deep inside. He gets Ethan into some trouble. Liam’s presence is being felt in a pretty major way.” That’s not the only 90210er he’s messing with. His new romance with Naomi (AnnaLynne McCord) is headed for a rough patch. “By the end of the season, there’s going to be some major drama with [Naomi] and her sister and possibly Annie. There’s some problem with her sister. She comes in and she definitely makes things tough in 90210. People are definitely going to be angry and betrayed,” adds Matt.

****

Compelled to respond to some things in this edition.

1. Jenny HAS been seen on recent GG episodes, just not in the leading story capacity we saw earlier this season.

2. Pretty sure it IS confirmed that Ryan Eggold will be on Melrose Place.

3. Dylan wasn’t a trouble-maker, so I don’t see how Liam causing drama makes them comparable.

RELEVANT QUESTIONS–DON’T READ IF YOU DON’T WANT TO KNOW!!!

I don’t understand why Dustin Milligan would want to leave “90210” now. Does he have another show lined up? -Alice
I don’t think leaving the show was really Dustin’s decision. Word is, he was not thrilled to get his walking papers from new exec producer Rebecca Rand Kirshner Sinclair.

Are Annie and Ethan done now? -Steph
Not yet. They start tonight’s episode as a couple… that’s not really talking. But by the end of the hour, Annie will be laying on the hood of a car up at make out point with some other dude.

So this kid Liam is supposed to be the new Dylan McKay? I don’t see it. Dylan is Dylan. The guy would have to be pretty special to be compared to the great McKay -Christa
Shenae Grimes (Annie), who is the only regular cast member that knows the original “90210” well, was skeptical about this Liam is the new Dylan business too. She told me she wasn’t buying it at first, but after seeing Matt Lanter work, she changed her mind. Me? After seeing this evening’s hour, I’m still not convinced, but I’ll give it some time. He doesn’t have to be Dylan reincarnated, I just need him to be interesting, worthy of our attention, you know?

I remember you saying that Liam is going to have relationships with both Naomi and Annie. Is that still the plan? -Kate
Naomi will fall hard for this dude right from the start. And though he completely blows her off tonight and doesn’t seem at all interested, she will win him over. I think he may even be taking her to the prom in May. His relationship with Annie, however, will build slowly. Shenae said Liam sort of challenges Annie. He doesn’t believe that she’s really as nice and sweet as she tries to come off. I guess he antagonizes her a bit and it sounds like the whole dynamic just reeks of sexual tension.

Korbi, Can you just tell us which long running “90210” couple will break up for good by next season? It’s gotta be Silver and Dixon, but not knowing for sure is driving me crazy. -Deanna

All I can say is Silver and Dixon are definitely in for more difficult times. As I first told you back in January, Silver is about to suffer a mental breakdown and her issues with Dixon will set off a major episode tonight. I’ll speak plainly, the girl done lost her mind.

Any news on my favorite “90210” character Navid? -Penn
I don’t think he appears in this evening’s new episode, actually. If he does, it’s briefly. But he’ll be back in a big way soon, don’t worry. Like I said before, he and Adrianna are not done.

90210 Locations Pt. 3

22 01 2009

I have one more “residence” to show you from the trip and it’s a doozy.

dsc02855

Any guesses?

dsc02856

It’s Dylan McKay’s house!

A peek inside the windows showed me that this location was used for exterior AND interior filming.  (I can’t say the same for Casa Walsh and the Beach Apartment.)  The inside, right down to the furniture set up, looks pretty much exactly as it did on the show.  We snapped a few more photos before we realized somebody was inside watching TV!  And then we ran!

dsc028581

Coincidentally, this house is only four houses west of Casa Walsh!

Come back tomorrow to see where the gang goes to school!
