Site of the Week

2 08 2009

This site has been in existence for nearly six years but not all of you may know about it.

One Tree Hill Music is “your official source to the music from the show.”

The site, which keeps track of the music used in each episode, is actually endorsed by the show and gets all its information from them directly.

There’s a ton of cool features, such as mixes for each character, behind-the-scenes segments and a complete listing of every music performance ever seen on the show.

I think my favorite section is the episode title references, which explains the meaning/source behind every single episode title.

The site was inspired by DawsonsCreekMusic.com, which used to be my bible but sadly has been “coming back soon” for months and months.

Be sure to check out One Tree Hill Music for, well, all your One Tree Hill music needs!

Exclusive: Allison Scagliotti Recalls One Tree Hill’s School Shooting

2 08 2009

Allison Scagliotti may have had a small part on One Tree Hill but as Abby Brown, the only witness to Dan murdering Keith, it was one of the series’ most pivotal. The storyline is frequently named among fans as one of the best, and Scagliotti shared with me what it was like working on it.

TeenDramaWhore: Your first episode of One Tree Hill (episode 3.16, With Tired Eyes, Tired Minds, Tired Souls, We Slept–the school shooting) is considered by fans to be among the very best.  When you auditioned for the role of Abby, and saw the script, what did you think?  Did you know the impact the episode would have?

Allison Scagliotti: First off, I’m so glad the episode garnered the response that it did. I had no doubt, given the subject matter, that it might resonate with a lot of people, so I think I speak for all involved when I say we tried to handle it respectfully. The audition process was kind of a top-secret affair. I read sides for a character named Michelle in a scene with another character who was not Jimmy Edwards [Colin Fickes]. After I was cast, the script that production released didn’t have the last page attached! They kept the end of the episode under wraps until the very last second. I was extremely moved by what I read, mostly because the Jimmy character was someone that could be very real. Who knows how many Jimmys there have been and still are in schools everywhere? The tragedy of what becomes of him is enough to wake people up, I think.

TDW: Did you know at the time that Abby would return and be the key person in the Dan-Keith [Paul Johansson-Craig Sheffer] murder storyline?  What was your reaction when you found out?

Scagliotti: I had no idea! Almost a full year went by before I got the call, but I was so pumped to go back. I also loved the idea that this meek, shy character could have been the missing link to the town’s morbid mystery. It was exciting to be part of providing some closure to fans for that major chapter of Tree Hill history.

TDW: Dan was anonymously taunted in several episodes, presumably by Abby.  Do you think that actually happened or was it just a figment of his imagination?

Scagliotti: Oh, I like to think that little Abby was the one sneaking around to torment Dan. Perhaps her motive was to guilt him into coming clean so she wouldn’t have to carry the burden of what she saw any longer. Or maybe she just wanted to haunt him the way she had been haunted. A little payback.

TDW: Was it difficult filming such an emotional storyline and/or difficult to keep it all a secret?

Scagliotti: Emotionality in a scene is usually pretty tough, but the episode The Runaway Found was extra difficult. Having to sustain that pervading misery that plagued Abby was not something I’d say was particularly fun at the time, but I can look back and said I enjoyed the process and working with the OTH team. Keeping it a secret was easy! Abby seemed to be one of those under-the-radar characters, so I had no problem with fans asking for spoilers. It was an Abby Brown sneak attack! Funny story: one day, while filming in Abby’s house, a whole gaggle of fans was perched on the sidewalk across the street, and shouted my name as I arrived from base camp. It was so bizarre! I never would have expected to be recognized from just one episode, but these kids were superfans. They’d driven down from New England just to hang around set. It was adorable.

TDW: Do you think Abby has a future in Tree Hill?

Scagliotti: If I’ve learned anything, it’s to never say never. The last time we saw Abby, she’d run away from Tree Hill. She could be anywhere! I guess it’s up to [creator] Mark Schwahn what becomes of Abby Brown. Are you reading, Mark?

TDW: Are you still recognized for the role?

Scagliotti: Yes! It totally takes me off guard when people recognize me from One Tree Hill, partially because I was only in 3 episodes. I’m always flattered, though. I can only assume that the Abby storyline was memorable, and that’s all that matters to me.

TDW: Are you still in touch with any of the cast?

Scagliotti: For a while, I stayed in touch with Paul Johansson (ironic, I know) and Hilarie Burton [Peyton]. Everyone on the show was delightful to me, but I clicked with those two the most. Paul was a dream to work with. We were very vocal about what we needed from each other before a scene, and as terrifying as he can be on screen, he was an absolute teddy bear in real life. I was walking around downtown Wilmington one evening, when I heard my name called from across the street. It was Paul, and we decided to hang out at a local restaurant for a while. We wound up out until 2 am. He’s the coolest. Hilarie was a sweetheart, too; we bonded over our favorite book, Lolita, and love of music. Typing this out makes me miss those guys!

TDW: You’re currently starring in Warehouse 13.  For those that aren’t familiar with it, what is the show about and what role do you play?

Scagliotti: Warehouse 13 is a Syfy show about a top-secret government facility that houses unexplained, supernatural artifacts from around the globe that pose a threat to national security. At the center of the fold you have two Secret Service agents charged with tracking down and obtaining the artifacts, and then you have Artie, the warehouse curator and expert. I play Claudia Donovan, a hip young techno-wiz who hacks her way into the warehouse to kidnap Artie, whom she believes is responsible for her brother’s disappearance. The show is action-packed and very funny, and the intrigue builds every week. I got to mess with the coolest gadgets.

TDW: Are you working on any other projects?

Scagliotti: [I just went to] Comic Con in San Diego to promote W13, and after that I’ll be working on a play here in LA with my friends Alden Ehrenreich and Jesse Allis. Other than that, fingers crossed for season two!!

You can see Scagliotti on Warehouse 13, currently airing Tuesdays at 9pm on the SyFy network.

Come back next Sunday for another exclusive interview!

Site of the Week

27 07 2009

Did you know Punk & Disorderly, Peyton’s web site on One Tree Hill, actually exists?

Peyton used the site primarily in season one to share her artwork as well as her thoughts.  Also through the site that you could “watch” her on the web cam.  (Actually you still can.  It’s kind of weird!)

There are other OTH sites, like RavensHoops.com and TreeHillHigh.com.

Making a legitimate site for fans was recently repeated on 90210, with Silver’s blog, The Vicious Circle.

Another example: a site jokingly mentioned on Dawson’s Creek–www.AnnoyingSister.com–used to redirect to their web site but no longer does.

Not sure if there are any others sites created for teen dramas that actually exist.  Do you know of any?

Exclusive: Joe Manganiello on Owen’s Future in Tree Hill

26 07 2009

Joe Manganiello is one heckuva long name.  But just say Owen and One Tree Hill fans know exactly who he is. Manganiello’s credits also include Spider-Man, How I Met Your Mother, American Heiress, ER, Til Death and Behind Enemy Lines: Columbia.

Manganiello spoke with me about Owen’s future in Tree Hill, his memories from the set and his upcoming projects.

TeenDramaWhore: What was the audition process like for One Tree Hill?  Did you have any idea at the time that Owen would go on to appear in more than just a few episodes?

Joe Manganiello: I auditioned against 20-30 guys. They called me in to read twice and then let me know I got it. They sent me three scripts at once so I knew I would be around for at least that long… -but- the first director I worked with was a complete asshole to me… He came up to me after the first take of my first scene on my first day of shooting and started the most disrespectful things any director has ever said to me… I’ve never been talked to like that at work and I’ve worked on really dense classical material with Moscow art theatre directors… I mean here we are doing a simple flirting scene between Brooke and Owen and this jerk doesn’t even pull me aside… He walks up to me in earshot of the rest of the crew and says… “who hired you?” to which I replied… “the show creator Mark Schwahn and the producer Joe Davola.” “in LA?” “yes.” “did you do that?” “well, we didn’t do that scene in the audition but yeah… that’s pretty much what I did…” He then proceeded to lecture me on what he thinks bartenders are like for several minutes until I interrupted him and suggested that “maybe I could smile more… how would that be?” “yeah, okay… try that…” It was brutal… I was a bartender when I was younger… I worked in bars and clubs from the time I was 16 years old… And I’ve been flirting with pretty girls since long before that… How far off the mark was I??? It took everything in me to not punch this old guy in the face… But I kept my mouth shut and put my head down and did the scene… And I’ve been on the show ever since… That one scene turned into 12 episodes and would have probably been more if I didn’t leave to shoot “Behind Enemy Lines: Colombia.”

TDW: Do you have a favorite scene or storyline from your time on the show?

Manganiello: I loved “Browen” and acting with Sophia Bush [Brooke]… I thought that there was a lot of chemistry in our relationship and I was excited to see what would have happened if we had a kid together.

TDW: Two of your most memorable scenes, I think, are when you rescued Rachel (Danneel Harris) and when you surprised Brooke in her car.  In the former, it was the first time we saw depth and range in your character.  In the latter, well, nudity is always noteworthy and it was repetition of a motif used throughout the series.  What did you think of those scenes when you read the script, filmed them and/or watched them on TV?

Manganiello: The nudity in the back of the car made me nervous [ed note: episode 6.9, Sympathy for the Devil] … But I’ve found that if I get nervous… Then it’s usually going to be a good scene… I was in a play in new york where I was full frontal nude and it was intense… I also did a show about my life in college in which I started out naked in the Terminator pose while heavy metal was blazing through these speakers… So I’m no stranger to it… But it sure does get your heart pounding… That coupled with the fact that a bunch of fans hung out across the street and were taking pictures with their camera phones made for an interesting morning of filming… But I must say… I loved the end product… I thought that that scene was hilarious… I thought that the “Browen” relationship brought some much needed laughter to an otherwise extremely dark season six.

TDW: Were you familiar with Slamball before it was written into the script?  What was it like shooting those scenes?

Manganiello: I knew that Slamball had existed but I didn’t understand the rules and didn’t realize that it was a professional league and had been around for as long as it had… I had two weeks of training before we started shooting and four days in I pulled a muscle next to my spine. I thought that because of the level of pain that I was in that I had cracked a vertebrae. I mean, it hurt to lay down. It was really scary. I was in so much pain. My poor girlfriend at the time was really scared. She didn’t know what to do… I went in for an MRI and I was prepared for the worst but they found that it was just a pulled muscle and would heal completely. They put me on some high powered anti-inflamatory pills and I got back in there just in time to film the scenes… The actual shooting days were extremely long and grueling. A lot of my action involved getting a full head of steam and colliding with guys who were all-American college linebackers. I can only describe it like repeatedly recreating a car crash for 16 hours every day. Oh, the things I do for my art…

TDW: Owen’s storyline was left a bit open-ended. He slept with Millicent (Lisa Goldstein) and then we haven’t seen him since really.  Do you think he’ll be back?

Manganiello: Mark said he would… I’m just not sure how, for how long, or in what capacity… But if it were up to me I’d come back right now.

TDW: In another interview you’ve done, you mentioned you filmed a scene where Brooke and Owen ended up together.  Can you tell me more about that?

Manganiello: Not much more to tell… Owen and Brooke were originally scripted to wind up together and we shot those scenes but the producers had other plans for them and had us reshoot a different plot…

TDW:You have a big on-line presence, especially with your fans on Facebook.  In years past you weren’t able to do that. What’s it been like interacting with your fans so much?

Manganiello: It’s been a blast… I love my fans!!!

TDW: Are you still in touch with any of the OTH cast members?

Manganiello: I keep in touch with Sophia and James [Lafferty, Nathan] and Mark and Joe… And I hang out with Robbie [Jones, Quentin] in LA.

TDW: What upcoming projects do you have?

Manganiello: I just pitched a movie to Lionsgate that I am writing and will produce and star in… So that’s exciting… And I can’t officially announce it yet but I just received word that I will be returning to one of the three shows that I recur on…

TDW: Lastly, just for fun, describe Owen in three words and describe yourself in three words.

Manganiello: For both: strong, grounded, sensitive…

Come back next Sunday for another exclusive interview!
