Fun Fact

11 06 2010

(Note: “Fun Fact” probably isn’t the best title for this post but I wanted to keep it within my ongoing “teen drama facts” series, where all the posts are titled “Fun Fact.”)

Last month’s 90210 season finale, in which the episode ends with Naomi seemingly about to be raped by Mr. Cannon, got me thinking about the use and portrayal of sexual assault in the teen dramas.

Below is a listing of all the occurrences, to the best of my recollection, with the only full-fledged main character rape thus far occurring during Beverly Hills 90210’s ninth season.

Beverly Hills 90210

-In Episode 1.09, The Gentle Art of Listening, Brenda works on a “teen line,” where an anonymous girl calls in and reveals she is, essentially, being date raped by two classmates. Brenda starts piecing clues together and figures out the girl is Bonnie, a fellow student at West Beverly, and the attacks are taking place after school events. She informs the police of what’s happening and they save the girl and arrest the guys.

-In Episode 1.13, Slumber Party, Kelly reveals her first sexual encounter happened with Ross Webber, where he led her into a forest and had sex with her on the ground. As she recounts the story during a girls-only slumber party, she cries as she says, “He kept saying, ‘Come on, Kel. I know you want it. I know you want it, Kelly.’ And I did… but not on the ground. He didn’t even bring a blanket. But it was over pretty quick and after that he took me home…and never talked to me again.”

-In Episode 2.13, Halloween, the gang is at a Halloween party where Kelly goes upstairs with an older guy she meets. When she doesn’t want to hook up with him, he calls her a tease and begins to force himself on her but they are interrupted by Brenda and Donna. When Kelly cries and explains what happens, Brenda calls out for Dylan and, with Steve’s help, they drag the guy out.

-In Episode 3.11, A Presumption Of Innocence, Scott’s sister Sue accuses English teacher Gil Meyers of sexual harassment and some of the gang takes sides. Meyers reveals there was an incident at the previous school he worked at, but insists he didn’t do anything then or now. Sue eventually confesses that she actually came on to him and reveals it’s actually her uncle who has been molesting her. Gil resigns anyway.

-In Episode 4.11, Take Back The Night, a one-time hook-up, Laura, accuses Steve of date rape. He is shocked by the accusation as, according to his memory, they were both into it. Kelly tries to help Laura until she learns Steve is the guy in question. Kelly doubts Laura’s story and shortly before she’s set to “go public” at a Take Back The Night rally at CU, Kelly volunteers to speak up instead. Kelly takes the mic at the event and recounts her season 2 experience and notes that Steve was the one who saved her. Afterward, Laura admits the sex was consensual but that she said otherwise because she felt used after he wasn’t interested in seeing her again.

-In Episode 5.23, Love Hurts, much of the CU student body is concerned about a sexual predator after a co-ed is raped in the previous episode. With some help, Brandon discovers the suspect is targeting Clare. Turns out, he was targeting Clare but after meeting Donna, he set his sights on her instead. When Donna returns to her apartment one night, she notices the lights are out and is suddenly grabbed from behind by the rapist, Garrett. He bounds her hands and later proceeds to force himself on her in her bedroom but they are interrupted when they hear David enter the apartment. With Garrett threatening her, she calls out that she doesn’t feel well and insists to David that he leave. But when she calls him “Dave,” he senses something is wrong and storms into her room. Together they overpower Garrett and knock him out.

-In Episode 8.20, Cupid’s Arrow, after each having fights with their significant others, Valerie and Noah end up sleeping together. The next morning, Valerie wakes up with little recollection of the night before and feels very ill. A doctor determines she was drugged with Rohypnol, commonly known as the “date rape drug” or being “roofied,” and Valerie concludes that Noah raped her. In the subsequent episodes, when the District Attorney declines to press charges, she files a civil suit. After a heated trial, the jury rules in Valerie’s favor and awards her a large sum of money. Donna, however, soon discovers that it was Noah’s brother Josh (played by Michael Trucco, aka One Tree Hill’s Uncle Cooper) who actually drugged Valerie’s drink and, due to being distracted by a phone call, was unable to stop Valerie from leaving with Noah instead of him.

-In Episode 9.25, Dog’s Best Friend, Kelly is called by Dylan, who is fearful he will relapse if someone doesn’t come talk to him. They pick a meeting spot and Kelly parks nearby. As she walks the dark, abandoned street alone, she hears footsteps behind her. As she speeds up, so does the other person. Said person eventually grabs her and throws her into an alley where he hits her, threatens her with a knife, rips off her clothing and rapes her. Coincidentally, the actor who plays the rapist had two other roles on the show, including an appearance in the season 2 episode mentioned above where Kelly is almost raped.

Dawson’s Creek

-In Episode 3.06, Secrets and Lies, Andie is dating Rob, an older guy whom Joey worked with until his (mostly non-physical) sexual harassment becomes too much for her to take. One night, a tearful Andie calls Joey (skip to 3:05), asking for help. Joey and Pacey find her, wanting to know what happened. Andie reveals she and Rob were hooking up and he started to take things too far. Pacey, Andie’s ex, angrily confronts Rob, who denies anything happened at all. Joey urges Andie to go to the police but she’s reluctant. Pacey comforts her and they reflect on their relationship. They share a kiss, which Pacey later calls a mistake. Joey speaks with Rob, who is still denying he did anything to Andie, and Andie gets upset with Joey for not believing her. Later, Andie essentially admits she made the story up, without explicitly saying it, noting she will do anything to get Pacey back.

-In Episode 6.04, Instant Karma!, Audrey is upset about her relationship with Pacey and heads to a party with Jen and Jack to blow off some steam. She drowns her sorrows in alcohol and ends up being led upstairs by a guy (skip to 4:55). Jen tries to follow but a different guy won’t let her pass. C.J. pushes past and they head upstairs. They find Audrey in one of the bedrooms and Jen leads her out as C.J. pushes the guy away.

The O.C.

-In Episode 2.21, The Return Of The Nana, while Ryan is out of town, Marissa takes it upon herself to entertain his brother, Trey. While drunk and high, Trey comes on to Marissa at the beach. When she resists, a struggle ensues. She eventually breaks free and runs off.

One Tree Hill

-In Episode 1.08, The Search For Something More, when Brooke and Peyton head to a college party, Peyton retreats into a dorm room with one of the co-eds. They bond over music and he offers her a drink…one that he roofied. She is nearly passed out when he starts to put the moves on her but Brooke senses something is up and is able to rescue her. She calls Lucas, who arrives and confronts the guy about drugging Peyton before bringing her home with Brooke and taking care of her.

Gossip Girl

-In Episode 1.01, Pilot, at the Kiss On The Lips party, Chuck leads Jenny up to the roof and starts to kiss her (skip to 5.50). She’s not into it and slyly texts Dan as Chuck pours them champagne. Cut to Chuck forcibly making out with her as Dan and Serena find them. Chuck abruptly stops as Jenny runs into Dan’s arms. Dan punches Chuck, Serena pushes him and they lead Jenny away. This event is one reason why some people are bothered by Chuck and Jenny’s consensual sex in last month’s season finale.

-In Episode 2.16, You’ve Got Yale, a vengeful and greedy Jack confronts Lily (skip to 1:24), who has teamed up with Chuck to retain control of Bass Industries. Chuck enters as Jack is forcing himself on her and he gets Jack off of her. Lily is shaken, Chuck is pissed and Jack is further exposed as the villain he really is.

90210

-In Episode 2.22, Confessions, Naomi’s car won’t start, so she heads into West Beverly for help. She finds Mr. Cannon, whom earlier in the season, she accused of sexually harassing her after he accused her of offering to sleep with him in order to earn her spot back on the Blaze staff. They talk for a bit about different things, including Naomi’s false accusation. He later takes her hand and kisses her. She pushes him away, but he says he knows she wanted him to do it and she doesn’t need to feel guilty. He tells her to stop teasing and that she has a harassment fantasy and is trying to provoke him. She is appalled and pushes him away, leading him to slap her and grab her. She threatens that she will tell and he asks who she would tell because she is “the girl who cried wolf.” Coincidentally, that was the name of one of the episodes in Beverly Hills 90210’s eighth season, during the aforementioned rape storyline with Valerie and Noah.

  • He’s thrilled. They hug.
  • He asks her to dance.
  • No kiss? Boo.
  • Naomi gives her thumbs up.
  • Amazing how not broken-hearted Naomi seems.
  • Ryan is at the event. He’s clearly drunk. Or high.
  • Laurel says he’s in a good mood.
  • Q25: Not really. Actually feeling more like a piece of trash.–Ryan
  • He rambles that he was excited to be a father.
  • Laurel says she’s wasted and needs to go home.
  • He’s shocked at her rebuff.
  • I kinda am, too. Given what we’ve seen from her.
  • He leaves. I think. I mean, he walked away.
  • Class of 2010 passes torch to class of 2011.
  • People are paired up. Juniors get their candles lit from seniors.
  • Everyone is really happy. But Naomi sees Seddy and Navianna and looks sad.
  • I guess that’s the heart-break.
  • She tears up and blows out her candle.
  • She walks out and gets on a school bus.
  • Outside, Ryan approaches some older woman and says he has to get back to school.
  • She says he just missed the shuttle.
  • He demands she drive him now.
  • She says it’s 15 minutes til the next shuttle.
  • He hops in the other waiting bus and takes off.
  • Car accident coming up? Or just DUI?
  • It’s nighttime, btw.
  • On the boat, Liam apologizes to her for missing the party.
  • Wasn’t he supposed to go, too? Technically?
  • She asks what the boat’s name is.
  • He had one picked out…but now he’s not using it.
  • Aw. I guess it was Naomi? Or something to do with love?
  • Q25: I guess the future is still unwritten.–Liam
  • He asks what she thinks.
  • She thinks it’s going to be rough for him now that he confessed.
  • Q26: I’ve done drugs. I’ve been violent. I didn’t tell people the truth about what happened with Jen. I’m really sorry about that. But this year’s changed me….So, yes, it’s going to be tough. But if I didn’t [confess] I don’t think I’d be able to live with myself.–Liam
  • She says he’s a better person than I.
  • He says she would do the same in his position.
  • Q27: Actually, I’ve done far worse and I haven’t come clean…I was the one who kills Joe Herman. Naomi has that prom afterparty last year and I was really upset and drunk. And I drove like that. I was coming down Mullhollond and I hit something.  I just panicked. I couldn’t even get out of the car. I drove home and secretly got the car fixed the next morning and hoped it was a coyote or something. But it wasn’t. I found out online that I hit a person. A man. And he was in a coma. And then he died. And his name was Joe Herman. And he was a human being. And I killed him.–Annie
  • She breaks down and he pulls her into his arms.
  • Wow. That was intense.
  • Does Liam get the last name connection?
  • Herman. Jasper Herman.
  • Jasper is watching from afar, though!
  • Which we knew would happen from the promo.
  • At school, Naomi gets into her car.
  • She’s not a happy camper.
  • Her car won’t start, though!
  • She sees a light on in school.
  • Dixon is at home.
  • Debbie comes in his room.
  • He’s packing.
  • She asks what makes him think he’s going away.
  • He says he was never told he can’t.
  • Really?!
  • Q27: Oh, then let me be clear. You can’t.–Debbie
  • He says he’s been planning this for ages.
  • Um, no you haven’t.
  • He asks if he’s supposed to stick around all summer and listen to her and dad fight.
  • She just says the decision is final and walks out.
  • Cut to her sitting outside alone.
  • Harry comes home.
  • She wants to know where he was.
  • He was getting fired!!!
  • Mark tried to blackmail him.
  • He went to the superintendent and told her the truth…and they let him go.
  • Wowow.
  • She doesn’t say anything.
  • He asks for her opinion.
  • Q28: Maybe you shouldn’t have lied.–Debbie
  • He flips at that response.
  • Q29: You want some wisdom from me? Well, it’s too late. Maybe you’ve should’ve come to me before you made our lives a total mess.–Debbie
  • He says he was protecting their son.
  • She says Dixon needs to learn that actions have consequences.
  • Q30: Don’t you get it, Harry? We don’t have anything. You don’t have a job. We don’t have savings. And we don’t love each other anymore!–Debbie
  • He asks if that’s true, if they don’t love each other. And do the back-and-forth “Do you?” “Well, do you?”
  • Q31: You look me in the eye and tell me if you’re still in love with me.–Debbie
  • He just walks away.
  • Wow. That was intense. I have to say, Rob and Lori have been nailing this in the last few episodes.
  • Javier comes up to a canoodling Navianna.
  • Javier says he just wants to talk to her.
  • He knows they’re not together anymore but she’s talented.
  • And the tour offer still stands.
  • She’s shocked but happy.
  • Navid says she should do it. It’s a huge opportunity.
  • And he can go too!
  • Javier says the tour is the whole year, not just the summer.
  • Q32: Adrianna, this is your dream. Right here, right now. I know it’s not the safe move. Come on, take a risk.–Javier
  • Oh boy. Offering her that high.
  • Naomi goes into an open classroom.
  • Cannon is in there working.
  • She says her car won’t start.
  • He looks sad and nervous.
  • She says she needs a phone to call AAA.
  • He asks if everything’s okay.
  • She starts to cry and says it’s not.
  • She sits down.
  • Q33: Everything is not okay. Everything is wrong. And it’s all my fault. Because I’m self-centered and I’m a liar. And a terrible person.–Naomi
  • He says she’s not a terrible person.
  • She says she almost ruined his life.
  • He says she didn’t.
  • He offers her some water.
  • He seems so sincere. But the promo suggests otherwise.
  • Ryan leaves the bus running and gets out.
  • Hit by a car?
  • No, he’s in the West Bev parking lot.
  • Gets into his car.
  • And hits the car in front of him. Like a fender bender.
  • He spies Naomi in the classroom window. But I don’t think she saw.
  • He backs up in a fast speed and hits the West Bev sign!
  • Cannon closes the blinds.
  • The lights on the broken sign have started a fire.
  • Liam and Annie are outside her house.
  • She says she has to do this alone.
  • He says he’s sleeping on his boat. His last night of freedom.
  • But if she needs him..
  • She thanks him. And they hug. And it’s awkwardly hot.
  • She goes inside.
  • Debbie is sitting alone, playing with her wedding ring.
  • No, Harry is there, too.
  • Q34: Mom, dad. I have something that I have to tell you.–Annie
  • Liam is back at the marina.
  • He spies his boat burning!
  • He runs over to it but it’s too far away.
  • A fireball goes up.
  • There’s Jasper, with his crutches, coming onto the dock from a smaller boat.

I will be resuming my weekly trivia games on Twitter soon and I will also have surveys to evaluate One Tree Hill, Gossip Girl and 90210’s seasons, like I did last year.

Exclusive: 90210’s Michael Steger Talks Navid’s Future, Journalism and More

7 03 2010

I first interviewed Michael Steger in spring 2008, shortly after The CW announced they ordered their 90210 pilot as a full series. He and the rest of the cast didn’t know much about their characters yet but he did know this: he’d sort of be Andrea Zuckerman version 2.0, via his association with the West Beverly Blaze.

I was sold. After all, Andrea had been the Beverly Hills 90210 character I identified with most (at least until she got pregnant and married–in that order–while a freshman in college…can’t say that happened to me!). A season-and-a-half later, I’m more than pleased to see Steger’s character Navid Shirazi still has the journalism connection.

While chatting on the phone earlier this week, Steger shared with me his favorite real-life journalists, filled me in on Navid’s storyline for the next few episodes (is there a possible battle of the red-heads brewin’?) and expressed where he’d like to see 90210 to go in season 3.

TeenDramaWhore: I’ve been reading up and watching the other interviews you’ve done lately. There’s a clip showing Navid by the lockers in school, wanting to plant some drugs on Jasper [Zachary Ray Sherman].

Michael Steger: I end up finding a way to get cocaine and I have a plan to use it to get Jasper kicked out of school. I’m trying to recruit Dixon [Tristan Wilds] and Liam [Matt Lanter] to help.

TDW: What is his motivation? Is it strictly because he wants his own revenge or is it out of concern for Annie [Shenae Grimes]? Or both?

Steger: I think it’s a little bit of both. I know Jasper pushed me down the stairs and no one else believes me. I also caught him selling drugs to Adrianna [Jessica Lowndes] and he’s also hurting Annie. So there’s a lot of reason for Navid to have pure hate for this guy. There’s a lot motivating Navid.

TDW: Is Navid any way connected to the Adrianna-Gia [Rumer Willis] romance?

Steger: I think Navid is questing his manhood. His self-esteem is really hurt. He’s asking himself a lot of questions, like “Does she not like men because she was with me? What’s going on?” He’s kind of perturbed a little bit that they’re together. He’s not used to it.

TDW: I’ve also heard that Navid gets a girl of his own.

Steger: Yes. Coincidentally, we’re both dating red-heads. I end up dating my star reporter, Lila [Amber Wallace (Glenda, One Tree Hill)], who’s almost as ambitious as I am. She works for the Blaze. I went through so much with Adrianna and Jasper and it’s made me completely devoted to journalism.

TDW: Speaking of journalism, I really like the journalistic side of Navid, for obvious reasons. I was wondering if you have a favorite journalist or someone in the media world you really admire.

Steger: Yeah, absolutely. Love Charlie Rose. Every time I catch him late at night, I really enjoy watching him. The questions he asks–I think he’s so smart. Diane Sawyer, love her. I really enjoy Bill Maher. I don’t know that he’s necessarily a hard-hitting journalist. More like a personality.

TDW: Going back to the show, I heard that the season finale is called Confessions. So I’m wondering how Navid figures into that. What might Navid be confessing?

Steger: Ohhh, you’ve got the good questions! He does have a confession. I can’t say what. It’s such a good episode. I think the fans are really, really going to like this one. A lot goes down and you see everybody’s true colors come out. He’s going to take everybody by surprise.

TDW: Is there anything in particular you’d like to do in season 3? Any storylines you want to tackle?

Steger: I’d like for the Blaze to showcase more hard-hitting issues, bringing hot topics to the forefront and educating our audience. I feel like there’s so much out there kids should be aware of. For instance, what’s going on in Haiti and different things around the world. I think those topics should be intertwined in storylines to get people aware. We’re part of pop culture and as much influence as we can impress upon kids, the better. So I would say promote more positive messages, because I know we’re busy always pushing the envelope and all the drama but it’s always good to throw some good examples in there.

TDW: I think that’s a really good idea. Something else I’ve heard from readers is that they want to know more about Navid’s family. We’ve seen your parents briefly here and there but will we see them again, maybe in a larger capacity?

Steger: Yeah, I think so. The writers, we’ve been talking about diving more into Navid’s relationship with his dad and the porn industry and how dysfunctional it is and how Navid feels about it. It’s almost like Navid is trying to escape that and wants to find success in something he finds classy and artistic. I think there’s a lot of room for stories with his family. He has to deal with this materialistic life as best as he can but it’s overwhelming. He drives a Lamborghini; he lives in a mansion. It’s a lot to deal with. It’s a lot of pressure for him.

TDW: You’ve already finished filming for the season, so what’s next for you?

Steger: I went to New York right away to see a bunch of theater. Now I’m getting back to my actor roots, looking for jobs and projects to get involved with. I’m having a great time. I’m really excited for this break.

Come back next Sunday for another exclusive interview!
