Love Triangles Pt. 6: 90210

31 01 2009

Today is the last post in the series The Essential Teen Drama Love Triangles.  This week we looked at Beverly Hills 90210, Dawson’s Creek, The O.C., One Tree Hill and Gossip Girl.  And last, but certainly not least…

TODAY: 90210

NAOMI-ETHAN-ANNIE

How It Started: When Annie moves to Beverly Hills, she’s happy to see her one-time crush Ethan.  Her excitement ends when she catches Ethan receiving oral sex at school–and not by his girlfriend Naomi.  Ethan, intrigued now that Annie is back and unhappy with Naomi, breaks up with her.

How It Ended: Ethan’s interest in Annie has to be put on hold when she starts seeing Ty, her co-star in the school musical.  In the meantime, Ethan and Naomi  get back together but when he and Annie work together on a school project, the two grow closer and soon start an exclusive relationship.

Key Episodes: 1.1-1.11

YouTube Evidence: Naomi & Ethan It’s Over; Ethan & Annie Crush

KELLY-RYAN-BRENDA

How It Started: When new West Beverly teacher Ryan meets guidance counselor Kelly, he’s instantly attracted to her despite the large age difference.  Kelly is especially hesitant because she is a single parent to Sammy (whose father is Dylan).  Ryan and Kelly go on a few dates before she leaves town to see Dylan.

How It Ended: When Kelly returns, she notices Brenda is giving her the cold shoulder and calls her out on it.  Brenda’s reason: “I slept with Ryan.”  And so the Brenda-Kelly war over a man begins again…

Key Episodes: 1.2-1.4, 1.6, 1.10-1.12

YouTube Evidence: I actually cannot find anything!  Anyone have anything?

Beverly Hills, 90210 Season 7 DVD

28 01 2009

Ever since season 6 came out in the fall, I’ve been impatiently waiting for news about season 7.

This week, I happened to check twice…and lo and behold, the second time, I found something.

Beverly Hills, 90210: Season 7 will be released on April 7th!

So what does that include?  Some of my favorite moments: David and Donna get back together.  Brandon and Kelly get back together. Everyone graduates from CU…and much more!

Let’s just hope there’s special features this time!

You can read more about the upcoming release here.

News Roundup: The O.C, 90210 and Gossip Girl

27 01 2009
  • Marissa (Mischa Barton, The O.C.) and Alex’s (Olivia Wilde, The O.C.) break-up is ranked number 9 on a list of the worst lesbian break-ups in TV history.
  • Jennie Garth (Kelly, 90210) says she wants to show the “real side” of her character.  Um, isn’t that what we saw on the 10 years of the first show?  Though I do agree that we should see more of her and Sammy…
  • More people watched 90210 on DVR this week than any other show.
  • Michelle Trachtenberg (Georgina, Gossip Girl) says she doesn’t know what her storyline will be when she returns to GG but she loves playing a “nasty bitch.”
  • Blake Lively (Serena, Gossip Girl) and Penn Bagdley (Dan, Gossip Girl) will appear on the DirecTV Celebrity Beach Bowl, airing Saturday.

RELEVANT QUESTIONS–DON’T READ IF YOU DON’T WANT TO KNOW!!!

Georgia in North Dakota: I love Toni Collette‘s new show The United States of Tara! What can you dish? I’ll take that or Gossip Girl.
I’ll give you both. At the premiere party for the show, Brie Larson (Tara’s daughter) showed up with a familiar Gossip Girl face. Her real life boyfriend is none other than Serena van der Woodsen’s ex-flame Aaron Rose (John Patrick Amedori). Kooky, right? When asked if she’s jealous that John was making out with Blake Lively Brie tells me: “You know, I don’t care. I think she kind of looks like me, so I don’t really take offense to it. I just envision that it’s myself…Whatever! He’s still my boyfriend!”

Randall in Miami: What’s the latest on Gossip Girl?
A former bigtime couple that some of you (though, admittedly, very few of you) love will be getting back together and who it is certainly surprised the pants off of me! Also, Nate’s grandfather makes him an offer that’s too good to pass up, which leads to Vanessa feeling out of place, and the dynamic of that relationship shifting. Basically the whole rest of the season is relationship roulette.

Wanda2Saints: Who is the GG couple getting back together?
Not Jenny and Nate, despite the purposely misleading photo at right. (Shhhhh!) And yes, right now you Chuck and Blair fans should be weeping, ’cause this old couple reconnecting totally means that Bluck or Chair (or whatever your name of choice) will not become a real couple any time soon this season.

Margaret in Tallahassee: What’s next for Rufus and Lily?
Rufus and Lily continue to play house, which continues to sicken the kids…and continues to seriously trigger my morning sickness. This baby is not a Rufus and Lily fan.

Any word on Tori’s comeback to 90210?
I’m hearing Donna (Tori Spelling) comes back to  Bev Hills and reveals she’s having problems with David (paging Brian Austin Green!). Seriously, have any of these women been lucky in love?! I feel for the old school 90210-ers! The upside, though, is that their careers all appear to be going well (and global). Word is, Donna is thinking about opening a clothing store in Los Angeles and she’s already a huge success in Japan.

Emily in Rapid City, S.D.: Have you heard any details on the new Dylan on 90210?
Yes, Matt Lanter soon joins the cast as the new Dylan McKay, and AnnaLynne McCord tells me she’ll be the first to get in on that action, “He is the bad boy and Naomi starts to love herself some bad boy…He] just throws her so off her Naomi world and off its axis, that it kind of intrigues her, so she feels challenged. He gets her into trouble.” And it looks like Shenae Grimes may also get into the mix., “I feel like there’s going to be a triangle somewhere there,” she tells me, “and I wouldn’t complain if I was apart of said triangle.”

Katrina in Auburn, N.Y.: Kristin, please tell me Josh Henderson will be back on 90210!
The maybe-he-is-maybe-he-isn’t, long lost Wilson kid might not be finished with Beverly Hills just yet! Josh tells me that the fate of Sean Cavanaugh has yet to be determined. ” I don’t think he’s done by any means. There are still things up in the air where I might be the son. It’s worth watching, I’ll just say that. My guy’s still bouncing back and forth.”

Gregory in Eugene, Ore: Anything you can share on One Tree Hill?
Looks like Lucas’ movie is going to get shut down.

***

Wow, this was so jam-packed with scoop that made me mad that I just have to comment!

  • Blair and Nate getting back together is old news.  I forget who broke it, but I did read it a while ago.  While I am not opposed to the idea, it’s hard to believe Blair and Chuck still won’t be getting together.  I much rather see a Nate and Serena pairing.
  • Donna having problems with David = NOT ACCEPTABLE, especially if BAG isn’t even on the show.  I am sick of the new 90210 rewriting history and ruining the way the original ended.  It is so disrespectful to longtime fans.
  • And calling Matt Lanter the new Dylan McKay is a little premature.  Would be interesting/annoyingly predictable, though, if it ends up being another Brenda-Dylan-Kelly triangle.
  • I really don’t want to see Lucas’ movie get shut down…except if it starts back up.  I’d love to see snippets of the final product, a premiere, etc.  Then again, it is getting to be very Dawson’s Creek-like where Dawson makes the movie (in the show’s penultimate episode) based on his life/the actual show.
  • Am I off my rocker about all this?  What do you guys think?

The Essential Teen Drama Love Triangles

26 01 2009

Love triangles are one of the major characteristics of teen dramas, often the most talked about, debated and controversial.  So what happens in a love triangle? This (or some derivation of this) in a nutshell:  Boy meets girl.  Boy dates girl.  Girl falls for someone else.  Girl dates that someone else.  Girl goes back to boy number one, but still has feelings for that someone else.  She may end up with boy number one OR boy number two.  You have to watch to find out!

In the next six days, I’ll be posting about the need-to-know love triangles from the 6 major teen dramas.

TODAY: BEVERLY HILLS, 90210

BRENDA-DYLAN-KELLY

How It Started: Brenda and Dylan began dating in season one.  While Brenda was in France the summer before senior year (season 3), Dylan and Kelly had an affair.  When Brenda and Dylan broke up, Dylan was going to begin dating Kelly until Brenda found out and he had second thoughts.  He spent a while debating who he wanted to be with before ultimately choosing Kelly.

How It Ended: When Kelly and Dylan broke up at the end of season 4, it seemed Dylan and Brenda were going to get back together.  This did not actually happen, though, until some time in season 6, and it occurred off-screen.  Dylan returned to Beverly Hills in season 9, where he admitted to Kelly that he and Brenda had been apart for two years.  In the series finale, in season 10, Kelly and Dylan committed to each other again.

Key Episodes: 3.3-3.7, 3.13, 3.19, 4.30-4.32, 6.32, 9.9, 10.28

YouTube Evidence: Brenda/Dylan/Kelly Love Triangle

DYLAN-KELLY-BRANDON

How It Started: While Dylan and Kelly were still dating in season 4, Kelly accompanied Brandon on a school retreat where they shared a passionate kiss.  When Dylan and Kelly broke up at the end of the season, Kelly followed Brandon to Washington, D.C. where they gave into their feelings and started a relationship, affectionately named Brelly by fans.  Dylan, predictably, was not happy about this when he found out a few months later.  At the end of season 5, Dylan tried to get Kelly back by offering her a trip around the world.  Brandon, realizing he might lose her, proposed.  Kelly made a memorable choice and proclaimed a now-classic line: “I choose me.”

How It Ended: With Dylan no longer in Beverly Hills, Kelly and Brandon get back together towards the latter half of season 7.  They get engaged in season 8 but decide at the last minute not to go through with the wedding.  At the beginning of season 9, they try to still have a relationship but that fails, in part because Brandon chooses to take a job on the East Coast.  Dylan returns to Beverly Hills not long after Brandon leaves, but it’s not until the end of season 10 that Dylan and Kelly commit to each other again.

Key Episodes: 4.22-4.23, 4.31-4.32, 5.2, 5.30, 7.26, 8.32, 9.1-9.3, 9.6, 9.9, 10.8, 10.28

Site of the Week: The Vicious Circle

26 01 2009

90210’s Silver is always blogging on her site The Vicious Circle.  The creative folks over at The CW went to the trouble of creating an actual blog for us all to read.  And it ain’t half bad.

My favorite post: when she waxes philosophical about older sis Kelly and her relationship with Dylan.

“Yet for some reason, Kelly and Dylan just can’t seem to get it together.  It’s this weird push and pull.  They’re like two magnets that repel each other –- you’d think that they should be able to make things work, but there are crazy polar forces that keep it from happening.  I’ve seen them together, and what they’ve got going is this storybook, telenovela kind of love.  But it’s also an idiotic, telenovela kind of love.  And even when they think it’s over, it’s never really over.”

So true, Silver.  So true!

90210 Locations Pt. 2

21 01 2009

You’ve seen Casa Walsh.  Now here’s a different residence…

The Beach Apartment!

While Kelly and Donna did in fact “live” on the beach, it wasn’t in Beverly Hills.  Instead, they lived about a half hour south of Los Angeles, in Hermosa Beach.

Let’s take a second to think about all the different people that lived here: Kelly, Donna, David, Clare, Carly, Gina and Janet.  As Clare once said, it’s all about “location, location, location!”

New 90210 Tonight!

20 01 2009

From Entertainment Weekly writer Jessica Shaw:

Hot, stubbly teacher Mr. Matthews returns!  He better look out, though, ’cause hell hath no fury like Kelly Taylor after her man slept with Brenda.

News Roundup: 90210, One Tree Hill and Dawson’s Creek

15 01 2009
  • So it IS true that Diablo Cody will be guest-starring on 90210!  You can read about it here, here and here!
  • Grant Show is up for making an appearance on 90210…if his character Jake can revive his his long-ago romance with Kelly (Jennie Garth)!
  • One of the show’s writers talks about Tori’s return here.
  • Watch with Kristin says there’s an “even” chance One Tree Hill will return for a seventh season.  Also in the article is a very interesting quote from Sophia Bush (Brooke) about once dating a current co-star (!) after splitting from Chad Michael Murray (Lucas).
  • James Van Der Beek (Dawson…duh!) will play a surporting role on a new pilot series called Eve Adams.

Article: Jason Priestley Won’t Rule Out 90210 Appearance

13 01 2009

Could it be?  Kelly and Brandon together again?

Perhaps, perhaps not.

If you ask Priestley (Brandon, Beverly Hills 90210.), you’ll get this answer: “I never say never, right? If Gabe [Sachs] and Jeff [Judah] came up with something really interesting, then we’ll see what happens.”

That revelation and more is packed into yet another TCA Press Tour article.

Priestley says some interesting things…that I kind of take issue with.  For instance:

JP says he directed 18 episodes of the original.  Other sources have it at 15 or 16.  (Though he did produce–whatever that means–more than 100.)

Says the only continuity between the original and new series is Erin and Kelly.  Guess he forgot about his twin sis, Brenda!

Says the new 90210 is bigger than the original.  Maybe BH90210 wasn’t huge at first, but it definitely got big!

Says “the episode I’m directing is a big episode. It’s a very ambitious episode.”  WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?!

Says the new series needs to be its own show and too many old characters shouldn’t come back.  Are you kidding?  That’s all the show has going for it!

WHEW! Okay, done ranting.

(Maybe I’m being too knit-picky?)
