Melrose Place and 90210

21 03 2009

Nearly every article about the Melrose Place remake mentions how 90210 was recently remade as well.  But the major fact these articles are overlooking is that the original Melrose Place was a spin-off to the original Beverly Hills, 90210.

Here’s what you need to know:

In April 1992, Beverly Hills, 90210 introduced a character by the name of Jake Hanson (Grant Show).  He appeared in two episodes as Dylan’s old friend and Kelly’s new love interest.

This was done to set up Melrose Place as a spin-off of Beverly Hills, 90210, much like we’ll see the beginning of the Gossip Girl spin-off on GG itself later this season.

In the first and second episodes of Melrose Place, which aired in the summer of ’92, Kelly (Jennie Garth), Donna (Tori Spelling), David (Brian Austin Green) and Steve (Ian Ziering) appear.  Kelly, David and Steve also appear in third episode, as well, which is where Jake breaks up with Kelly and all ties to Beverly Hills, 90210 are cut.

This new Melrose Place is a remake, just like 90210 is of its original.  But this time, there isn’t any cross-over link between the two shows.

On my old site from long ago, we again combined 90210 and Melrose Place into a fan fic series.

For a good source on the Melrose remake, check out this site.

News Roundup: Gossip Girl, One Tree Hill, The O.C. and More

20 03 2009
  • This could make teen drama cross-over history!  Apparently Josh Schwartz is thinking about including an ’80s era Kirsten and Jimmy from The O.C. on the Gossip Girl spin-off as friends of Lily.
  • Korbi at Zap2it has a preview clip of Monday’s Gossip Girl.
  • Tons of fans showed up where One Tree Hill is filming, presumably, Lucas and Peyton’s wedding.
  • President Obama briefly mentioned Gossip Girl in a recent Town Hall session.
  • Austin Nicholas (Julian, One Tree Hill) reads from The Fountainhead, one of his favorite books, in a video on the Southern Gothic Productions blog.
  • Joshua Jackson (Pacey, Dawson’s Creek) says being on the show didn’t leave him time to “grow up.”
  • Tristan Wilds (Dixon, 90210) will star in a movie about an all-black unit of the army serving in World War II.
  • Finally watched the Beverly Hills, 90210 reunion that aired on BIO in February.  Turns out, it WAS the same special that aired in 2003.  Despite the description saying it would include Tori Spelling and Brian Austin Green, it didn’t as they weren’t in it then and obviously aren’t in it now.  A bit disappointing, but still fun to watch it again and relive the memories!

News Roundup: 90210, Gossip Girl, The O.C. and More

18 03 2009
  • Jossip has a very un-complimentary look at some CW actresses, including Shannen Doherty (Brenda, 90210), Jennie Garth (Kelly, 90210), Kelly Rutherford (Lily, Gossip Girl) and Mischa Barton (Sonja, A Beautiful Life).
  • Annie (Shenae Grimes, 90210) is getting a new enemy in Phoebe, to be played by Lily Collins.
  • JustJared has photos of the 90210 cast doing their Habitat for Humanity project.
  • Jessica Lucas (Kimberly, 90210) has been cast in the Melrose Place remake.
  • Photos surfaced of Blair (Leighton Meester) kissing Nate (Chace Crawford) and Chuck (Ed Westwick) in the same outfit.  E!Online is wondering if it’s just to throw fans off.  You decide.  Or just wait for the episode to air!  (A similar photo of Blair and Chuck is in the March 30th issue of PEOPLE.)
  • In the same PEOPLE issue, there’s also a tiny photo of Taylor Momsen (Jenny, Gossip Girl) and her “idol” singer Debbie Harry.
  • Also in that issue, Sebastian Stan (Carter, Gossip Girl) doesn’t confirm or deny that he’s engaged to Meester.  He just says “I don’t pay attention [to reports].  My friends trust my word above anything else they hear.”
  • Westwick is included in a TVGuide.com photo gallery of “Foreign Actors with Great American Accents.”
  • No Doubt will appear as Snowed Out in the May 11th episode of Gossip Girl as part of the Lily flashback.
  • Josh Schwartz talks about the Gossip Girl spin-off here but it’s nothing we don’t already know.
  • Nikki Reed (Sadie, The O.C.) says she goes to Jennie Garth’s (Kelly, Beverly Hills 90210) house to play poker with her Twilight co-star and Garth’s husband, Peter Facinelli.
  • There’s a strange promo for next week’s One Tree Hill with the cast appearing as characters from The Sims.
  • The New York Post deemed student-teacher relationships on TV the “Pacey Witter Effect.”

17 03 2009
  • Newsday called Gossip Girl “one of the smartest shows on television” and rated this season an A.

  • Sebastian Stan (Carter, Gossip Girl) has one of the lead roles on Kings, a new series airing on NBC.

  • You can customize your iGoogle homepage with a One Tree Hill header.
  • Chad Michael Murray (Lucas, One Tree Hill) gives one-word plot twists in a new video interview: dog, baby, heart, cash, hospital and love.   Also, did you know he’s is a painter in his spare time?!  Who knew?!
  • James Lafferty (Nathan, One Tree Hill) will play in a Battle of the Sexes celebrity basketball game.
  • Tori Spelling’s (Donna, Beverly Hills 90210) new book, Mommywood, will no longer go head-to-head with her mother Candy’s memoir.  I’ll still be buying both!
  • SoapNet is airing commercials with Spelling talking about different Donna moments.  Really just promos to get you to watch the repeats.  Would be cool if they did this with all the characters!
  • Ryan Eggold (Ryan, 9021o) said he didn’t watch the original show growing up, choosing ninjas and Saved by the Bell instead.
  • Love this “open letter” praising Josh Schwartz.
  • The New York Times compares Schwartz’s Rockville CA to The O.C. and Gossip Girl.

Everyday I look up from my computer…

…and stare at these for inspiration.

I made these super-collages into posters out of smaller ones I found on the good ol’ internet.

Do you have teen drama photos decorating your room, too?

News Roundup: Gossip Girl, 90210, The O.C. and More

14 03 2009
  • PEOPLE has an “exclusive clip” from Monday’s all-new Gossip Girl.
  • The Futon Critic has a really great interview with Stephanie Savage (executive producer, Gossip Girl).
  • Chuck (Gossip Girl) and Lucas (One Tree Hill) made it to round two of Alpha Male Madness.  Joshua Jackson’s (Dawson’s Creek) Fringe character is still in the competition as well.
  • Shannen Doherty (Brenda, Beverly Hills 90210) and Luke Perry (Dylan, Beverly Hills 90210) are featured in a Los Angeles Times piece on comebacks.
  • Doherty is also included in a  Fox News piece on stars who left hit shows, but the blurb has some facts wrong.  See if you can spot the error!
  • Just because we’re in a different decade now doesn’t mean you can’t get fashion tips from the original 90210.
  • Mischa Barton (Marissa, The O.C.) isn’t joining the Melrose Place remake but will be in another CW pilot instead.  She talked to PEOPLE about the role she’ll play.
  • EW pits Barton against AnnaLynne McCord (Naomi, 90210) for “top beast” honors.
  • Benjamin McKenzie’s (Ryan, The O.C.) new show, Southland, is included in E!Online’s midseason TV preview.

  • The New York Times has an article on Josh Schwartz (The O.C., GG) taking his talents to the web.

Top 5 Biggest Vixens Pt. 5

13 03 2009

Part One, Part Two, Part Three, Part Four

1. Valerie Malone (Beverly Hills, 90210)

This should come as no surprise as Valerie was and is, without a doubt, the ultimate teen drama vixen. There wasn’t a woman in Beverly Hills Val didn’t fight with or a guy that was safe from her come-ons.  With a priority list that consisted of ME ME ME, Val stopped at nothing to get her way from the day she set foot in the zip code.  A few arrests and even an AIDS scare didn’t deter her to change her wild ways.

HONORABLE MENTIONS

These ladies deserve a small shoutout for occasionally causing trouble but either not sticking around long or having a lot more to their personality.

Sophie Burns (Beverly Hills, 90210)

Jen Lindley (Dawson’s Creek)

Abby Morgan (Dawson’s Creek)

Eve Whitman (Dawson’s Creek)

Taylor Townsend (The O.C.)

Brooke Davis (One Tree Hill)

Nicki (One Tree Hill)

Taylor James (One Tree Hill)

Georgina Sparks (Gossip Girl)

ANYONE I’M FORGETTING?
