EPISODE 2.14: Girl Fight

  • Previously on: Teddy says he wants to be with Silver, Silver sees him hugging a girl, Dixon meets Teddy’s sister, Dixon tells Silver Teddy is a player, Dixon tells Teddy he and Silver aren’t over, Liam and Naomi reunite, Dixon wants to seek out his birthmom (again), Annie knows Jasper knows her secret, Navid tries to take down Jasper and ends up taking himself down instead
  • Ade, Naomi and Silver are shopping. Yay they’re still friends again!
  • Ade is waiting to hear from Navid.
  • He was suspended due to the drugs
  • She’s very concerned for him.
  • And concerned that he doesn’t know she cares.
  • They tell her it will be okay and at least he wasn’t expelled.
  • They run into a seemingly happy Annie and ask her to join them.
  • Naomi is looking for an LGD: little gold dress. LOL
  • They urge her to come but she turns them down.
  • Jasper walks up and now they know why she won’t come.
  • They leave and Annie’s attitude turns sour.
  • Jasper says she said she would give him a chance.
  • She says she is trying.
  • He says he wants things to be the way they used to be and asks her to come over tomorrow night.
  • She says no, and he slams the table.
  • He says he’s sick of her attitude.
  • Q1: And we had a deal. And you know what’s at stake.–Jasper
  • She agrees to come over.
  • At school, Dixon walks up to Silver.
  • Silver says they should talk.
  • This must be a dream.
  • She says she wants to get back together.
  • Camera is kind of slow-mo and revolving around then.
  • They kiss. It’s kind of hot.
  • And Dixon wakes up.
  • Yep, I called it.
  • Dixon comes into the kitchen, very chipper.
  • Debbie, Harry and Annie notice.
  • Dixon says he woke up with a good feeling and something he’s been worried about is going to work out.
  • Debbie asks if this has to do this his mom.
  • He says no, she hasn’t e-mailed him back.
  • But he says it’s okay and things will only get better.
  • How did he get her e-mail? Hm.
  • Dixon now sees Silver in school, kind of like the dream he had.
  • And she says they should talk.
  • But that’s where the similarities end.
  • She wants to be friends.
  • Dixon asks if she’s still into Teddy, then.
  • Q2: It’s not like an either or thing. Teddy or Dixon…I don’t feel that way about anymore you–or right now.–Silver
  • Ouch. We all know how that feels.
  • She says she likes having him back in her life and wants it to stay that way.
  • He says it will.
  • I have no idea what is up with the curls on her head.
  • Liam and Naomi are in the cafeteria and the awkwardness continues!
  • They don’t seem to get when the other one is joking versus being sincere.
  • Naomi says she did some reading about boats and they start to bond, kind of.
  • But Ivy interrupts, throwing food at him.
  • And he instantly gets up and has a mini-food fight with her.
  • Naomi is kind of flabbergasted and POed. I would be, too. That was a major flirt-sesh!
  • Ivy leaves and Liam tries to play it down.
  • Naomi runs after Ivy.
  • Naomi just called Ivy “Ives” LOL
  • She asks if she’s over Liam.
  • Ivy says she is, of course, since she pushed them back together.
  • Naomi says she needs help with Liam. They have chemistry in the bedroom but it’s not working out of it.
  • She says she sees them interact and wants that. How can she get it?
  • Ivy says she doesn’t know how to help since she’s not with them.
  • Naomi then suggests they all hang out together. Great idea, Naomi. ::rolls eyes::
  • Naomi can be so smart sometimes and ridiculous dumb other times.
  • Ivy is taken aback but then (I guess) a plan comes to mind and she agrees.
  • Annie goes to Jasper’s. You can tell she’s part-nervous, part-disgusted.
  • He says his parents are away and they have the whole house to themselves. Sketch!
  • He says he knows what their problem is. They’re not connecting…intimately.
  • Q3: If we have sex, you’ll remember how magical things were between us.–Jasper
  • She says no and he asks her when she means.
  • She reiterates and he says she has to…give them a chance.
  • Q4: “Are you saying if I don’t have sex with you, you’re going to go to the police?” “Don’t be vulgar, Annie. I just want what’s good for both of us. I just want us to have a real chance.”–Annie and Jasper
  • He kisses her and she cringes. And so I.
  • They’re still kissing. He moves her to the bed.
  • She pushes him away, starts to cry and says she can’t have sex with him or be in a relationship with him.
  • Q5: If that means you have to go the police, then you have to go to the police.–Annie
  • He says she doesn’t mean that but she says she does.
  • She says that if he really loves her like he claims, he won’t go to the police because his chance at being with her will be gone.
  • Good point.
  • I doubt that will stop him, though.
  • He does let her leave.
  • Oh, look, it’s Ryan! He’s still around!
  • He stops Naomi as she leaves class.
  • Q6: The similarities between my paper and the Wikipedia entry are completely coincidental.–Naomi
  • Oh, Naomi. LOL
  • Ryan says that’s not it. He wants to know if she’s doing okay, post-Jen.
  • She says she is.
  • He says he has some of her stuff but Naomi says to dump it.
  • Ryan says Naomi is here if she needs to talk.
  • Naomi asks how he is, since Jen used him to. She was only with him to make herself look more compassionate to rich men.
  • Apparently this new to Ryan. (Um, how?)
  • He’s looks, and I imagine, feels very rejected now. (And how did he feel before?)
  • Adrianna goes over to Gia and asks how she is.
  • Gia brings up Navid and Ade says she hasn’t heard from him but it’s better not to think about it.
  • Q7: When I pass Navid, it feels like I can’t breathe.–Ade
  • Gia talks about seeing her ex, Alexa, and they debate who is most miserable. Gia wins.
  • Their chat is actually kinda of cute. Hmmm.
  • Liam, Ivy and Naomi are going for a hike or something.
  • Naomi says she loves the outdoors and Liam is surprised.
  • He leads the way and Ivy apologizes for picking this activity. But we know she did it purposefully./
  • Naomi is still excited.
  • Silver and Dixon are dining somewhere. The beach club? The Peach Pit? (Cough) Must be the beach club.
  • They are kind of bonding.
  • Silver asks
  • Q8: It’s cool. I’m kind of used to being rejected.–Dixon
  • Silver sees Teddy with the girl from the dance and surmises they’re still dating.
  • She asks Dixon what she’s like and Dixon says she doesn’t really know.
  • Silver notes how friendly Teddy and her seem.
  • Dixon suggests they leave.
  • But Teddy’s sister, Savannah, has walked up!
  • Q9: I think you’re making a huge mistake rejecting a guy like my brother.–Savannah
  • Silver is shocked, of course.
  • Teddy is mortified and pulls Savannah away, apologizing.
  • But first, Savannah says goodbye to Dixon by name.
  • And Silver realizes Dixon knew who she was all along and lied about it.
  • Q10: What kind of friend are you?!–Silver
  • She takes over.
  • The “threesome” is hiking.
  • Naomi is clearly exhausted. And a mess.
  • I think Ivy is in jeans. LOL
  • Ivy tries to “warn” Naomi about poison ivy (ha!) but confuses her so she falls.
  • Liam comes to the rescue, though.
  • Naomi sends him to some what.
  • Q11: I’m on to you.–Naomi
  • She says it’s clear Ivy still likes Liam.
  • Q12: You’re too much of a coward to admit it.–Naomi
  • Ivy says she’s not.
  • Naomi challenges her to come clean.
  • Ivy says fine, and admits it. She still likes Liam.
  • Q13: And you guys suck as a couple.–Ivy
  • Naomi tells Ivy to stay away from him.
  • Ivy says that will be hard, since they’re on the same surf team.
  • Q14: “It’s gonna be hard for me not to take you down.” “I’d like to see you try.” “Oh, honey. You have no idea what you’re up against.”–Naomi and Ivy
  • Gossip Girl promo…with a scene from last night. Odd.
  • Dixon sees Teddy studying and asks to join him.
  • He says he has something to tell him.
  • He confesses Silver was into him at the Winter Wonderland dance but when she saw him with Savannah, he thought he was dating her.
  • Teddy is really happy to know Silver was into her. He lights up. Awww.
  • Dixon continues…he purposefully let Silver think Teddy and Savannah were dating and then he kissed her.
  • Q15: “What the hell, bro?!” “Yeah. You should punch me.”–Dixon
  • Q16: “I’ve been rejected by Silver. I’ve been rejected by my birth mom. I failed a math test I studied for for three freakin’ hours. But none of those excuses are good enough. So you should punch me.”–Dixon
  • And Teddy does! Very hard! In the stomach.
  • Dixon, out of breathe, admits he deserved it.
  • Ade tells Gia she loves P.S. I Love You, The Notebook and Love Story. (I love the latter two. Haven’t seen the former.)
  • Alexa interrupts, asking Gia to call her later. Gia agrees.
  • Ade suggests maybe she wants to get back together, that that’s a good thing.
  • Gia doubts it.
  • Annie is leaving school and finds an envelope on her car.
  • Inside are pictures of her damaged car. Yikes.
  • Jasper appears, saying they were hard to find.
  • But he did, tracking down her insurance company. OOOhhkay.
  • Q17: “Is this a threat?” “No. It’s a present.” “You win.” “We’ll get back together?” “No. If you want me to confess, I’ll tell them.”–Annie and Jasper
  • (I may have gotten that last part of the quote wrong. Sorries!)
  • On the beach, so the girl friend must be coming up! (It’s been way too advertised…aka pimped.)
  • Naomi is delicately spreading a towel and then reveals a hot bikini, calling out to Liam.
  • He’s in the water. He doesn’t look as happy as he should.
  • Ivy passes by.
  • Naomi makes fun of she looks.
  • Ivy retaliates, saying she’s going into the water…with Liam.
  • Naomi says she’ll be waiting for him…all oiled up. TMI, Naomi!
  • Teddy goes up to Silver, saying Dixon told him everything.
  • Silver says she knows her mistake about Savannah.
  • She apologizes for assuming the worst and then overreacting–and for kissing Dixon.
  • He says it’s okay, he doesn’t care about that anymore. Instead, he wants to know what she was going to tell him at the dance.
  • He surmises that she wanted to get together.
  • She admits that’s true.
  • He suggests they pick up right where they left off, then.
  • Silver says no. She thought he was a player and he probably is, seeing that he’s been with two girls since the dance.
  • Q18: How much can you like me if you were able to move on so quickly?–Silver
  • Very interesting question. Different answer for different people.
  • Woah, Silver has a Vespa? (And funky goggles/glasses) Since when?!
  • She takes off. Teddy seems hurt/disappointed.
  • I have totally felt for him throughout this whole thing. I love this side of him. And I want them together!
  • Ryan is at a bar, grading papers. Strange. But so he is.
  • A woman is next to him, pointing out that it is indeed strange.
  • He admits it’s been a rough couple of weeks.
  • She introduces herself as Laurel.
  • She’s dressed hippie-ish but looks quite a bit older than him. (And, due to spoilers, we already know who this person is…)
  • Liam comes over to Naomi.
  • She has food for him.
  • Ivy walks up, asks for some. Naomi just smiles.
  • Liam says this is nice of her.
  • The coach calls Liam away.
  • Naomi kicks sand Ivy’s way “accidentally.”
  • Ivy “accidentally” hits Naomi with her surf board.
  • And you know what happens next…
  • Q19: “I’m gonna kill you!” “Get the hell of me, you crazy bitch!”–Naomi and Ivy
  • They’re still fighting, post-commercial break.
  • It’s quite amusing.
  • Liam notices, runs over, calls Naomi’s name and pulls her off.
  • More concerned for her? Or Ivy?
  • Liam asks what’s going on.
  • Naomi yells that Ivy has been trying to break them up.
  • Ivy denies it.
  • Naomi reiterates, saying she never should’ve asked Ivy for help because…
  • Q20: She’s not the problem. We are the problem! I wouldn’t have had to ask that she-devil for help if it wasn’t so awkward between us.–Naomi
  • She’s still yelling, btw.
  • Q21: I’m done. This is me, Liam.–Naomi
  • She says how she’s not interested in boats or nature or anything.
  • Q22: If you ever, ever think I’m going on another hike again, you’re out of your freakin’ mind.–Naomi
  • Q23: And if you don’t like me for who I am, that’s just too damn bad.–Naomi
  • She yelled/cried through all of it. Very raw. Well done, AnnaLynne!
  • She runs off.
  • Ivy suppresses a smile.
  • Liam’s gaze is still following Naomi. I can’t really tell what he’s thinking! Stunned? Pissed? Sad?
  • Ryan and Laurel are bonding/flirting.
  • Apparently Laurel has slept with a few rock stars.
  • She asks him why he’s drinking on a school night.
  • Q24: “I’m guessing you just got dumped. Or your indie rock band just broke up.” “I don’t have an indie rock band.”–Lauren and Ryan
  • That was pretty funny and then pretty sad.
  • She touches his head and I missed what she said. Darn.
  • Gia asks Alexa (Alexis? I’ve already forgotten!) what she wants. They are outside somewhere.
  • Alexa says she misses Gia and wants another shot.
  • Ryan and Laurel are getting it on in a car.
  • Ade is watching Love Story in her room. It’s going to make me cry!
  • Ade is crying, too.
  • Gia interrupts, asking if there’s room for one more at Ade’s pity party.
  • Ade asks about Alexa, thinking she wanted to get back together.
  • Gia says, no, she just wanted to give her her stuff back.
  • Ade says she’s very sorry or something like that.
  • Q25: Okay, we are starting this over. Be prepared to cry.–Adrianna
  • She’s not kidding, either, folks!
  • Gia brought tissues and snacks with her, lol.
  • They seem very at ease with each other.
  • Annie is trying to compose a latter to her parents, telling them her secret.
  • She writes how on prom night she accidentally killed a man.
  • And–boom–Jasper is in her open window!
  • She’s freaked. And, once again, so am I!
  • Jasper climbs in.
  • Annie asks what he’s doing there.
  • He says he’s not going to turn her in. He rather have a chance of being with her again someway.
  • Q26: I love you too much. If you love something, set it free. If it comes back, then it’s yours. Just come back to me Annie, okay?–Jasper
  • He leaves.
  • Annie deletes the document (not realizing it automatically saved already…hm) and she’s, like, crying tears of joy and relief.
  • Naomi is just finishing a massage at the beach club. As the masseuse leaving, Liam comes in.
  • Naomi says he didn’t need to come over and break up with her in person.
  • Liam kisses her. Intensely. Hotly.
  • See folks, that’s what they have! Intense, hot sexual chemistry.
  • Q27: So, girl fights turn you on?–Naomi
  • Liam says he’s been feeling distant since they got back together.
  • He says she’s been so polite and unlike the girl he fell for.
  • She says she just wanted things to be so perfect that she ended up not being herself.
  • Q28: The girl that I fell for is ballsy and opinionated and sure of herself. And today I finally saw her again.–Liam
  • I totally got Ryan Atwood vibes there! Matt was sooo Ben-like in his delivery. Anyone agree?
  • They start to get it on. Great. So much for showing they truly are more than that.
  • Liam may like those things about Naomi but it’s hard to believe because we rarely see her being that in front of him. We rarely see them doing anything beside sexing, pining or fighting.
  • Ivy is on the beach with a blonde woman.
  • I thought it was Jen for a sec and was typing OMFG but then I saw it’s Laurel. Her mom. (Which I knew.)
  • Laurel feels bad that Ivy struck out with Liam.
  • She offers Ivy pot. LOL
  • Ivy turns it down, saying her mom should stop that.
  • Q29: “I’m cool.” “You are cool. And Liam’s an idiot. Which is why he and Naomi deserve each other. You know, Mick Jagger was an idiot, too. Why he chose Jeri Hall (?), we’ll never know.”–Ivy and Laurel
  • Naomi, Ade, Silver and Annie are having dinner together!!!
  • Aw, I’ve missed this! This show really needs more of a cohesive gang.
  • They’re all having fun together.
  • Naomi says she is now looking for the perfect LSD: little sequined dress, because boys like shiny things.
  • Annie says she is happy for her and Liam. Naomi genuinely says thank you. Aw, guys!
  • Naomi says she’s got bruises but she’s happy with her fish. LOL
  • Silver says her fish may be a player.
  • Naomi says Silver won’t know unless she tries.
  • I think I spotted Jasper watching them from afar.
  • Teddy is on the tennis court, violently hitting balls.
  • Silver walks onto the court. Cue the coda music. LOL
  • Q30: “I don’t want to be with you.” “Yeah, you made that pretty clear.” ‘No, I want to be with you. I don’t want to want to be with you.” “What are you saying?” “I’m scared. I like you a lot. I want to trust you. But I don’t. So I’m scared.” “So what do we do now?”
  • She kind of runs up and kisses him. It’s really sweet. And kind of melts my heart.
  • Q31: You better not hurt me.–Silver
  • They kiss some more. Yayness.
  • Why isn’t it ending there?!
  • Dixon, Debbie and Harry are watching Jeopardy.
  • Harry gets the question right.
  • I’m not sure why we’re watching this.
  • Harry gets another question right.
  • Again, why are we watching this?
  • Oh, here’s why. The doorbell rings.
  • (In case you cared, Dixon and Debbie realize they’re watching a TiVoed ep so Harry has seen it before and that’s how he knows the answers. Because no show has ever done that before!)
  • Dixon goes to get the door and it’s his birth mom!
  • He’s shocked. Are you? I’m guessing…not.
  • Q32: “You’re here.” “I’m here.”–Dixon and his birthmom
  • Debbie comes over, to see who’s there. And she is doubly-shocked.
  • Fade to black.
  • Preview: If you date a player, you gotta play he game. Silver is jealous/POed about girls hanging around Teddy.

Those are my thoughts. What’s yours?

RELEVANT QUESTIONS–DON’T READ IF YOU DON’T WANT TO KNOW!!!

Francesca: Will Life Unexpected and One Tree Hill get another season? Please say yes!

I’m hearing both are still undecided, but stand a better chance than some other on-the-bubble CW shows at this time. So keep the faith! We’ll be launching our annual Save One Show campaign soon to give you a chance to help them. Stay tuned.

Wendell: I’m obsessed with 90210! What’s going to happen with Jasper and Annie?
What’s going to happen is Jasper’s going to get creepier and creepier. In totally unrelated news, Dixon’s family car is stolen—I wonder who could possibly be responsible for that?

  • Gossip Girl says Jenny and Damian are having relations.
  • He’s in her room. Apparently he snuck in.
  • They’re discussing about a date planned for Saturday.
  • But the date will be filled with drug deals.
  • Damian says he needs to store the drugs with her…in a DVD case.
  • She agrees. This will backfire. And not just because the previews told us.
  • Damian’s grandfather (or was it father?) wants to see him but he said he has plans.
  • Jenny has practically no makeup on. I miss that!
  • Serena comes into Nate’s kitchen just wearing one of his shirts. I guess she’s staying there now? And Chuck isn’t home?
  • He made breakfast.
  • But it quickly turns into a makeout sesh.
  • Kind of gross one. Involving food.
  • The implication is they had sex. Now they are, um, resting on the kitchen floor.
  • Blair is yelling from another room, as if she’s having sex with Chuck.
  • Serena says she doesn’t want to be undone.
  • Nate’s phone rings…and it’s Chuck. LOL
  • Chuck says he left his cell at home and doesn’t want Blair to get a hold of it.

  • Serena has covered her bottom-half with a blanket and a pillow.
  • She senses Blair is upset about something else.
  • Blair says they’re not connecting. Not just physically but emotionally.

  • But he went through something big last week and if he’s still upset about it, he should talk to her.
  • She just wants to make him feel better. Aw.
  • Dan is in the dorm. Some girl named Melissa (Marissa?) kind of hits on him. He turns down her advances and…
  • …knocks on Vanessa’s door.

  • Vanessa says he doesn’t have to explain.
  • She says she’s going to a party now…with Paul.

  • Serena tells Blair to give Nate the phone. He does.
  • He checks it and sees it’s the same number he called on before.
  • Blair plays the message.

  • Blair announces that it must be Elizabeth Fisher, because she was staying at the Algonquin.
  • Chuck walks in and interrupts.
  • Q5: Her named used to be Evelyn and she’s my mother.–Chuck
  • Q6: And just like that, we get the mother of all questions.–Gossip Girl
  • But how does he knowwwwwwwwwww?
  • 90210 promo.
  • Chuck is holding half a locket, the one we saw last week, with a picture of a young woman holding a baby. Presumably Elizabeth and Chuck.
  • Nate says Bart said Chuck’s mom was dead.
  • Q7: He also taught me kids wore suits to kindergarten and blue chips stocks were great. He told me what he wanted me to believe.–Chuck
  • Blair explains they met her last week.
  • Serena says he should be happy. His mother is alive!
  • Chuck, however, is not happy at all. He leaves to go drink.
  • Serena says they have to help him.

  • She says she’s hear if he wants to talk and if he doesn’t.
  • Chuck says this news about Elizabeth doesn’t change anything.
  • Q10: The past remains the past.–Chuck
  • Blair suggests going to Bart’s grave, with the locket, and leaving it there and moving on.
  • He gives her a kiss.
  • Lily tries to get Rufus to calm down. Weird, considering she was POed earlier and is the one who called Rufus.
  • Q11: Jenny is not Serena. Contrary to popular belief, children needs boundaries.–Rufus
  • Damian tries to explain to Rufus that he and Jenny just fell asleep watching TV the night before, even though that sounds straight out of “teenagers for dummies.”
  • Rufus says the worst part of having a teen daughter is remembering what it was like to be a teen boy.
  • Woah, Rufus just called Jenny Jennifer! He means BUSINESS!
  • He sends her to pack her things. She will stay in Brooklyn at the loft again.
  • Lily tries to interrupt but he says he’s going to pack his things, too.
  • Vanessa tells Dan that Melissa seems nice.
  • But this is weird. Because they’re not “in the friendship groove.”

  • Serena says Chuck needs to know his mom and just needs a push.
  • Q12: Careful, S. You may think you know what’s best. But this time you might just be pushing your Chuck.–Gossip Girl
  • I imagine this is stemming from Serena’s sadness over her relationship with her dad. She still can’t find him–or he won’t let himself be found (letter aside)–but Chuck has found his mom and isn’t taking advantage of it.
  • They’re at a restaurant and in walks Elizabeth.
  • Blair immediately says it wasn’t her. LOL

  • He writes her a check.
  • He thinks she’s only shown up now, out of the blue, for some of Bart’s fortune!
  • Serena tells Blair and Nate that Elizabeth doesn’t want money. She really just wants talk. She says she’s going over there.
  • Q14: Serena, sit your ass down.–Blair
  • Wowow!
  • Chuck says there’s no strings attached to the check except one: she doesn’t share her story. She just leaves and never comes back.
  • She asks if this is really what he wants. He says nods.
  • She apologizes again and walks away. I think she took the check.
  • Q15: Expensive lunch, but it was worth it. By the way, you were wrong.–Chuck to Serena.

  • Damian points out she’s still in high school and Rufus isn’t “completely out of line.”
  • Q17: I’m not going to write your name in a heart on a binder…But give me something to fight for.–Jenny
  • Damian says Jenny is already fighting with her dad.
  • Jenny points out she always fights with him and it doesn’t bother him.

  • Jenny looks shocked/sad/hurt/contemplative.
  • Damian says they are his.
  • They all chase after Chuck.
  • He walks off.
  • Blair tells Serena she knows why S is doing this. (See my comment above!)
  • Serena says she’s right and says she should go.
  • Nate says he’ll go with her but she says she wants to be alone.
  • She gets into a cab and Nate asks Blair what she meant.

  • So they start making out?!
  • Jenny asks Damian where he got that charade from.
  • He said the story is true: his dad is actually an addict.
  • Jenny asks why Damian doesn’t move out or something.
  • He says if keeps coming home, his dad will, too.
  • But he kind of contradicts himself a moments later saying…
  • Q22: Be happy if you have a father who actually cares what you do.–Damian
  • Rufus tells Damian it’s time to go and Jenny is still coming with him.
  • Jenny tells Rufus she really liked Damian and he says Jenny is young and will get over it.
  • Serena goes up to Elizabeth, who is checking out of the hotel.
  • Elizabeth said Chuck’s feelings were clear.
  • Serena says she wants to talk about herself.

  • She got her life, Bart got the baby.
  • Serena says Elizabeth must’ve had regrets.
  • Elizabeth says Bart paid her every year but he didn’t have to. She’s never regretted her decision.

  • She says she’s scared.
  • And he kisses her.
  • It was actually kind of cute/sweet. I wish I got the back-and-forth quotes. Sorry, folks.
  • Jenny tells Rufus she’s sorry and she know she’s grounded but asks if Damian can have “visitation rights.”
  • Rufus says no.
  • Jenny asks Lily for help.

  • Vanessa suggests they take it one day at a time and keep being friends.
  • Just friends?
  • Dan agrees, as long as they can keep hooking up.

  • She’s not happy.
  • Serena is leaving a message for her dad, unsure if that’s still his number, though. Nate is with her.

Those are my thoughts. What’s yours?

Exclusive: Charles Rosin Talks Beverly Hills 90210, showbizzle and More

14 03 2010

Think the Spellings are the only real-life Beverly Hills 90210 family? Think again. Meet the Rosins: Charles, Karen and their daughter Lindsey.

As you may recall from my previous interview with Charles, he was the executive producer of Beverly Hills 90210 for its first five seasons. Karen wrote nearly 20 episodes between 1991 and 1994 and Lindsey had a memorable cameo in Episode 2.o6, Pass/Not Pass, as a little girl asking Brandon (Jason Priestley) to dance the hukilau at the Beverly Hills Beach Club.

I mentioned in January that my interview with Charles was one of my highlights of TDW Year One. I never dreamed I’d interview him once–let alone twice and this time in person. But that’s exactly what happened in January on a weekday morning in New York City, where Charles, Karen and Lindsey came to promote their new media venture, showbizzle.

Charles and I sat down to talk about showbizzle and, of course, Beverly Hills 90210.

TeenDramaWhore: If you had to give your elevator pitch for showbiz, what would you say?

Charles Rosin: Showbizzle is a digital showcase for emerging talent that combines a webseries called showbizzle with a platform for talent away from the immediate pressures of the marketplace. So it’s two mints in one: it’s a show and it’s a resource for emerging artists. The show is populated by emerging artists and it was really conceived by emerging talents, namely Lindsey Rosin being the first one to be showcased, as the writer and director of the majority of the shows. So that’s the basics of it.

Unlike so many people who do webseries, what they’re hoping is “Oh, everybody loves our webseries and we create so much action and energy, FOX or The CW will find us and want to put us on the air.” We’re not interested in that. If we wanted to do something specifically for broadcast or cable, we would go into the room with those people and say “We think this works for your medium because…” But we like this form, the potential of it, the idea that you can just do what you want to do and not have to go through committees. From a business standpoint, there’s ownership potential that works in the current marketplace.

So the premise of the webseries is that Janey, a young wannabe screenwriter, who is very plugged into the culture of Los Angeles, sits in a coffeehouse in L.A. trying to write her screenplay and looking forward to all her friends who stop by and interrupt her from that. That’s the basic premise of it. What is a lot of fun about it is that for someone like yourself and the audience that you know, that although you meet all these disparate characters doing these short little two-minute snackable, for-the-digital-world kind of stories, you start to realize these characters are related and there is a serialized story. It builds to a serialized place. We’re fans of that. We try to do it with humor and insight and with a lack of snarkiness that is so prevalent in the digital world. We try to do a show that’s engaging.

One of our slogans is, “Just take a little bizzle break.” The one thing about all media, all the shows you cover–and thanks for even thinking about showbizzle in relation to it–is what they really are is diversions. Somehow in the last 20 years, the importance of the television business, the shows that are made, have been thrown so far out of proportion because of the material value of it. But all they are–we have a lot of issues going on the world–is just a little place to get a respite, to get a chuckle or a laugh. One of the things that Lindsey really values is when her friends say, “That happened to me” or “I’ve got a story.” The whole social network aspect came from Lindsey saying, “We should ask our viewers what’s happened to them,” because even though it’s very specific to Hollywood, because that’s where we’re set, at the same time trying to get ahead in life and figuring out what you’re going to do and using every connection you have when you’re kind of an adult but not really an adult, is something [everyone goes through] and we wanted to explore that.

TDW: How did showbizzle start? Who came up with the idea?

Rosin: The origins of showbizzle go back to a day in December in 2005 when Disney announced they were selling Lost on iTunes, which effectively meant the end of the syndication model that financed network television. Producers would make X number of shows and if they had enough, they could sell them to the local stations and other places, and that’s how the revenue would come back to the companies and people would profit from that. Fortunately, I benefited from that twice. Once from [Beverly Hills] 90210 and more recently Dawson’s Creek, which moved into profit because of the syndication of it. But when you sell something prior to syndication, it dilutes the value of the syndication and to do something that as dramatic as to put episodes on iTunes the day they’re running or the day after they run is a fundamental change.

I started thinking about that and how network television was going to be changing. In the spirit of “everything old is new again,” I started thinking about branded entertainment, which goes back to the pre-network era, where with the television of the 50s, companies–Chesterfield Cigarettes, Lucky Strike, Kraft, General Electric–would come in and buy the half-hour or the hour and be totally associated with the show, whether it be variety or comedy or drama. They all had that. That’s how the revenue was derived. I started to think about what company had the resources to do this and is currently not an advertiser on network television. I realized that anyone who was going to put their name above an entertainment project was going to do it and want total ownership and control and then go to a network or then go wherever they want to go.

So I approached Starbucks about a project called Starbucks Presents. We did this in the winter-spring in 2006. We were trying to create a social network for the people who use Starbucks, in store or at home, and program hours of different ways to do things. At the core of it was a daily soap opera about what goes on in a coffee house. Showbizzle is the distillation of that idea. By the way, Starbucks’ response was “Don’t bother us. Come back to us in 5 years. We’re in the music business.” They’re no longer in the music business. They’re still in the coffee business.

TDW: Where does the name come from?

Rosin: Well, we wanted to call it hollybizzle for a while but it was taken. So, showbizzle, not quite show business. And certainly Snoop Dogg is very “fo shizzle” and made my kids laugh. We were sitting around the dinner table–I have two other children besides Lindsey–and we came up with that and said let’s see if that one will work. We like the name quite a bit. It’s friendly and open.

TDW: What is your role on a day-to-day basis? Is this now your full-time gig?

Rosin: I teach at UCLA and I still develop shows. I was very active in the business from the late ‘70s to about 2005. Found my name wasn’t on the lists that I liked anymore and this was a place to do it on my own. The idea to get more sponsorships, provide things for the community–that is where I spend a lot of my time [with showbizzle]. I think like 85, 90 percent of the time I still do other forms of writing and developing other projects as well. I like teaching and I like doing this. If J.J. Abrams called, I’d answer.

TDW: What is Lindsey’s role?

Rosin: I get to refer to her as “the talent.” She’s the writer and director. The other woman who did a lot of writing and directing for the first season is a woman named Arika Mittman and Arika just won a Humanitas Prize for an episode of South of Nowhere that she did. Arika was my assistant on Dawson’s Creek. She’s terrific and very talented and gets along very well with Lindsey. Arika, she’s someone who in a different lifetime would’ve been head of daytime. She plotted the serial a little bit with Lindsey. But Lindsey, I say to her–sometimes to her consternation; it’s a family business and all–anytime she’s involved with the site, it’s better on all levels.

TDW: What has been the response you’re getting from people in the business?

Rosin: I think they admire the effort and realize we’re pioneers. This is not formed. People haven’t done things like this. They always ask, “How are you going to finance this?” and I kind of talk about it but steer away from it a little bit. It’s designed to be branded entertainment and we’re here in New York now to try and find brands. We’re hopeful that we can and we present something that has potential and is different. There’s certain things we did in the first year–we did a lot of monologues; we didn’t emphasize the cinema. We’d like to have a little more production value. Lindsey has a lot of ideas for the second season. We know where to pick up the show and what kind of sponsors we’re looking for. Forms follows function, after all…

TDW: You mentioned finding sponsors. Is that what you did on this trip?

Rosin: One of the most difficult aspects of doing webseries is, whether you’re doing six episodes with friends in your dorm room or if you’re trying to do something to ultimately become a daily habit on the web, is to get the levels of support that you need. When you do branded entertainment, you want to get to brands. Brands have not been oriented to this. So we’re starting to see the change and transition as more and more brands advertise or consider sponsorships and realize that it might be worthwhile to look at certain web series, to brand projects and put their name above the title and all that. It’s a question, though, of “how do you get access to that?” One of the ways is you do something and it goes viral and they come to you and say, “How do you do that?” The other way is to do some work, you put it together, you have more ideas, you go to the brand and say, “With your marketing support, we do A, B, C, D and E” and that’s the method we chose. Creatively, I think showbizzle is somewhere in a middle ground or at least between premium high content and user-generated. We want it have the feel of an independent but be scripted.

There was an event [this week] called Brand In Entertainment, which was an event to meet people who are independent purveyors of content and meet brands and those that are interested in the sector or interested in tipping their toe in. It’s a risk-adverse world, especially after the financial meltdown. It’s all going very slowly. But I had meetings with one or two other people who have access to brands and I wanted to let them know what we’re doing. It was a business-oriented trip.

TDW: You mentioned that you have people who are just starting out in Hollywood playing the characters in the webseries. Is anyone getting “noticed” from it? Any success stories?

Rosin: The thing that’s interesting is remember my original definition: digital showcase, emerging talent away from the immediate career pressures of the marketplace. So really, it’s only about a creative expression. Too much discussion in Hollywood has moved away from any form of creative satisfaction and is only based on business elements. That’s why you always hear about returning an investment and all that. Well, what about creative satisfaction? So the goal of [participating] is not necessarily to further a career but to allow them to perform. We are going to try and accelerate it. We’re going to formally announce soon that we’ll have a rotating group of casting directors as residents and we’ll supply short little monologues and encourage our community to perform them, upload the video and guarantee them that the ones the casting directors like the most, they will comment on them and be on the homepage. You get on the digital showcase. You’re in our community and now you get to be singled out. That might help.

This time last year, a cute little blonde came in and started [working for us], making calls to colleges for outreach. She was really nice. One weekend she told me she had to go to New York. For my class at UCLA, I was putting together a list of what [new] shows [the networks] had ordered so we could [evaluate] them and I saw the girl’s name. It was Brittany Robertson [Lux on Life Unexpected]. She was the girl making our calls. I had Subway sandwiches with her for weeks. I sent her an e-mail and said, “Either you get major kudos or someone has stolen your name!” Now she didn’t perform on showbizzle and I don’t think necessarily that people have seen someone on showbizzle and said, “I need that girl or that guy,” but I think it gives people the confidence to be that girl or that guy.

In the second season we may go after a few names that people know to play little characters. It’ll probably make a difference. Two of the biggest names so far have been Fran Kranz, who was on Dollhouse and was just terrific, and James Eckhouse [Jim], who isn’t in the same demographic. But people can come [to showbizzle] for various reasons. As Lindsey likes to say, they can choose their own adventure. They can focus on getting industry resources or they can focus on the show, they can express themselves, they can take a bizzle break from all the troubles in life.

TDW: What lessons from Beverly Hills 90210 have you been able to apply to showbizzle?

Rosin: The main thing I learned from [executive producer] Aaron Spelling is you make a show for an audience. The audience satisfaction really matters. We continue to adjust to what our audience is looking for, what they say they want. The other thing, which I always like to say, is showbizzle is low-budget production. We were able to do a little content for not very much money but still paid people and all that. 90210 was lower-budget production. We had much less money in the first two or three years than what was there afterward. When we built the college set, that was a big thing for us. We didn’t have big restrictions. The first few years we did. We learned how to do something economically and you learn how someone is paying for all this. Usually that someone is your corporation, whether it’s Disney or Fox or Aaron Spelling. In the case of showbizzle, it’s us. You have to be prudent. Production we were able to handle very well. It’s the digital stuff, the Web site stuff that sometimes spirals out of control.

TDW: I was curious to know if you and Karen were already married when you started working on the 90210 or if the relationship was born out of the show.

Rosin: I met a really cute girl in 1976. We were married a year later in 1977. We’ve been together a long time.

TDW: That is a long time.

Rosin: Yes, we’re very old.

TDW: I know she’s had a career of her own but she wrote close to 20 episodes of Beverly Hills 90210.

Rosin: She wrote the best ones. It was an interesting thing. Mr. Spelling had had a bad taste in his mouth about putting a married team on a show from when he did Dynasty. He never really wanted to let Karen come on the staff and be a permanent part. It allowed her to stay home and raise our kids, which is a great thing but at the same time, she really deserved a lot more recognition as a writer, as a writer-producer, and didn’t really get that from 90210 and I always feel badly about that. But it was circumstances beyond our control. I really love collaborating with her, and I really love collaborating with Lindsey, because you find out with writers, all writers have strengths and all writers have weaknesses. A lot of writers who really excel at dialogue have trouble organizing the story, the scene dynamics. That’s what I do in my sleep. But I’ll struggle over dialogue for hours and hours. So it was a really nice fit with us. One thing I would to say anyone who is starting out and is thinking about collaborating, is that you have to feel whomever you’re collaborating with brings more to the party than you do. You’re not carrying them but you’re benefiting from them. And that’s my relationship with Karen as a writer. Anytime we work together, it gets better.

TDW: I know you did commentary for the earlier seasons of the DVD sets.

Rosin: Karen and I were asked to do it on season 3 and I did an interview for season 4.

TDW: Since season 4, there’s been no extras. We’ve had seasons 5-9 with no extras.

Rosin: Want my opinion? Because there’s nothing to say. The show ended with season 5, in my opinion. Season 5, if you were going to do one, the person you’d need to talk to is Luke [Perry, Dylan] because Luke was so important in those first 12, 13 episodes where he has his money stolen and has his whole depression and anger, leading to the crashing of his car. Luke drove those first 13 and it was a pleasure to do them with him. He had such intensity. If he’s not going to talk about it, then what are you going to say? Tiffani [Amber Thiessen, Valerie] would’ve been the other person to talk to for season 5.

TDW: Some of us have also been upset with the cover art and that many songs have been replaced on the DVDs or scenes were cut because of songs issues.

Rosin: Knowing how much Mr. Spelling cared about the audience, the fact that the music isn’t up to the standards that we had, he’d understand it as a businessman but he’d be rolling over in his grave.

TDW: I heard you were once working on a 90210 spin-off concept with Aaron.

Rosin: When we were thinking about moving forward with the college years, we also proposed they could spin-off a West Beverly High series but they didn’t want to do that at that time. Then in the year 2000, Spelling wanted to do it and I was hired to do something on it but it didn’t turn out to be what they were looking for. It was like 90210, the next generation. I think it had the exact tone of the high school shows but it was just for a different generation of high schoolers. Instead we have this bastardized version that’s on now.

TDW: What was your reaction when you first heard about the one that’s on now?

Rosin: The first reaction was that it just shows how important the brand is and how much branding means. Every generation has the right to do anything. I don’t own it. It was Viacom, Spelling. Darren Star created the show. It was more his world than it was mine. I was there to do something much specific. But now I’m more excited by a show like Life Unexpected than recycling shows from a different era just because of their title. I don’t feel [the new show] has that much in common with the original other than it has a high school premise and it’s in Beverly Hills. But tonally, from what I’ve seen, it doesn’t have that much in common.

TDW: Not sure if you’re aware but they recently killed Jackie Taylor [Ann Gillespie].

Rosin: Why?

TDW: They did this whole cancer storyline.

Rosin: I understand that. When you run out of ideas, you get people sick. No offense to Joey [E. Tata, Nat], but we were struggling and had to do 32 episodes. So Nat’s going to have a heart attack [Episode 4.18, Heartbreaker]. If you see characters getting sick like that at random, it’s usually evidence of a bankruptcy of ideas, in my opinion.

TDW: It came out recently that Rob Estes [Harry, 90210] is leaving the show and people are very surprised. “He’s supposed to be our patriarch. He’s supposed to be our Jim Walsh.”

Rosin: I would imagine that you do things like that when you realize a few things have happened. After the 5th year when I left [the original], so did Gabrielle Carteris [Andrea] but so did Jim Eckhouse and Carol Potter [Cindy]. At a certain point, you get to be a mature show. You realize you have to cut your overhead a little bit. You realize the storylines are going to move into a different direction and things are going to be different. So you do make adjustments. Why did Estes leave? Maybe he was profoundly unhappy with what they’ve done with his character. I wouldn’t know that but that’s usually why actors leave. They weren’t satisfied. The show thought they were paying too much money. He wasn’t being utilized, etc.

TDW: It came out recently that Jennie [Garth, Kelly] is sort of cutting ties with the show as well. The media went crazy with it.

Rosin: I only have admiration for Jennie. I don’t see her that often but I know she’s raising a wonderful family. She has political and social issues she’s very committed to. I really admired her on Dancing With The Stars. She wouldn’t have been able to do that at 21, 22. To have that courage, I admire that a lot. Jennie was very loyal to Mr. Spelling, very loyal to 90210 and I’m sure that led her back to [the new show] in a way. One thing you realize is that people do for their careers what they think is best, both in getting in with things and getting out of things. And I never like to comment on that because at a certain point they thought it was a good idea.

TDW: Are you in touch with anyone else?

Rosin: I am. I’m in touch with the guys. Luke, not as much. Hopefully will get back in touch pretty soon. But Jason Priestley [Brandon] I consider a really good friend. I love Ian Ziering [Steve]. He actually helped on showbizzle, doing an interview. And Jim Eckhouse I actually put in front of the camera. So those are the guys pretty much. And I keep in touch with Gabby through her husband, who is my stock broker.

TDW: I spoke with [writer-producer] Larry Mollin recently and he expressed some interest in doing a panel to talk about the show.

Rosin: If you ever want to do something like that, you let me know.

Come back next Sunday for another exclusive interview!

Kelly Rutherford on Playing Lily

12 03 2010

“I’m so glad I’m not playing a frumpy mom. She’s divorced, raising two kids and trying to make the right decisions. She’s figuring it out as she goes along. It’s inspiring to play a character who doesn’t always have the right reaction. I think the best thing we can do for our kids is to work on ourselves.”
