News Roundup: One Tree Hill, Gossip Girl, 90210 and Dawson’s Creek

15 09 2009
  • The Daily News has a photo gallery called “TV Shows That Peaked in High School” and our teen dramas have the (dis)honor of being in it.  One Tree Hill is given credit for skipping the college years, “which may be why this former teen drama is still on the air today.”
  • There’s tons of teen drama content in the new issue of Portrait Magazine.
  • One Tree Hill (2.59 million) did better than Gossip Girl (2.52 million) last night, but not by as much as they usually do.  This was GG’s best ratings since January.
  • Have any of you been to SoapNet’s board for One Tree Hill? Just curious since I’m not really liking it and wondering if anyone feels the same.

Random Question

12 09 2009

This one has a long back-story so bear with me.

In season 3 of Beverly Hills 90210, Dylan’s dad Jack died in a car bomb explosion.

In season 6, Dylan found out who was responsible for Jack’s death–Tony Marchette.  As a way to get closer to Marchette (so he could enact revenge), Dylan befriended Marchette’s daughter Antonia (aka Toni).  They ended up falling in love and marrying.

Marchette wasn’t having it and decided to put a hit on Dylan.  Things went awry and Toni ended up taking the bullets, leading to her death.  Following the funeral, Dylan leaves town.

In season 9, Dylan returns to Beverly Hills and again wants revenge on Marchette.  He is shocked to find out Marchette actually killed himself not long after Toni’s death.

In season 10, Dylan is shocked again when he finds out his father is actually alive–he’s been in the Witness Protection Program all these years.

Here’s the question: Was Jack’s death purposefully faked/staged or did the government (or whoever), knowing about the bomb, rescue him at the last second and put him in the program?

That then begs the following question: Was Marchette responsible for Jack faking his death (as in, did Marchette help him do it) or did Marchette actually try to kill him and think he succeeded?

The writers in season 3, I’m sure, didn’t specifically plan for the season 6 or season 10 storylines (I know this for a fact, actually).  Season 10 probably rolled around and they came up with the idea that Jack has been alive all this time and went with it.  But doing that had major implications for the past storylines.

Was Toni’s death in vain?  It certainly seems that way.  But for which reason: Was Marchette trying to keep Dylan from finding out the truth–that his father was still alive? Or, as far as Marchette knew, Jack was dead and, yes, he was responsible, just as Dylan thought, and wanted Dylan dead, too?

Another thing that bothers me: at the end of the episode where Toni dies (6.10, One Wedding and a Funeral), Dylan says to Marchette “My father is dead. Your daughter is dead. We’re even now.”  Dylan lost his father AND his wife!  How the hell is that even?

It’s a very complicated series of storylines and raises some interesting questions.  Would love to know Luke Perry’s take on all of this.  Maybe one day I’ll get to ask him!  Fingers crossed…

10 09 2009
  • I have decided that future Trivia Nights will only be held on Mondays and Tuesdays *when the episodes are repeats.*  If there’s a new episode, there won’t be trivia.  If it’s a repeat, I’ll host trivia.  This seemed like the most fair and least-stressful way to do it.  During long hiatuses, however, such as the summer off-season, we will go back to weekly games.  I will always post about a Trivia Night the morning of, so keep your eyes peeled, and I’ll give a heads-up in advance whenever possible.
  • Check out Mark Schwahn’s preview of One Tree Hill’s season premiere.
  • Taylor Momsen (Jenny, Gossip Girl) and her band Pretty Reckless played a show in New York tonight as part of Fashion’s Night Out.

  • Joshua Jackson (Pacey, Dawson’s Creek) is on the cover of  the new issue of Entertainment Weekly. (Coincidentally, he was also on the cover this week back in 1998–more on that tomorrow).  He says his show Fringe “has been the total opposite of my Dawson’s Creek experience.”
  • The Vampire Diaries is being described as “Twlight for the 90210 and Dawson’s Creek crowd” and an “updated Dawson’s Creek with fangs.” There’s more comparisons here.

  • Mischa Barton (Marissa, The O.C.) has a new post on her blog–her first one since July.
  • TVGuide.com has an interview with Jeri Ryan (Charlotte, The O.C.) on her role in Leverage.

Spoiler: Ask Ausiello

10 09 2009

RELEVANT QUESTIONS–DON’T READ IF YOU DON’T WANT TO KNOW!!!

Question: Can you do me a huge favor and give me some Gossip Girl scoop pertaining to Blair-Serena? I’m dying to know if my favorite frenemies will be loving or hating each other this season. —Sally
Ausiello:
They’ll start out loving each other, but by November, the hate is on! What triggers the war? Let’s just say Blair doesn’t follow the bros before hos belief system (or, in this case, hos before bros).

Question: Did I miss your annual list of what to watch and what to avoid among new shows this fall? I learned long ago that if you love a show, I’ll probably love it. And if you hate it, I’ll probably hate it, too. —Melissa
Ausiello:
Nope, you didn’t miss it. I decided to publish it a little later than usual to maximize creative opportunities and deliver the audience the best list possible. I think you’ll agree it was worth the wait:

Take It: Modern Family, Melrose Place, The Good Wife, Community, Cougar Town, FlashForward, V, and The Vampire Diaries.
Take It or Leave It: Bored to Death, Accidentally on Purpose, Trauma, The Beautiful Life, and The Middle.
Leave It: Mercy, Brothers, and Hank.

Question: Will Naomi ever find out that Annie was not the one who slept with Liam on the night of the prom on 90210? —Gia
Ausiello:
Yes, but not until later in the season. In other 90210 news, California University makes a comeback in episode 5 when Naomi starts planning for life after high school. And by planning I mean seducing the dean’s tree-hugging son (played by The O.C.’s Jonathan Trent).

***

Melrose Place stars Laura Leighton (Sophie, Beverly Hills 90210).

Cougar Town stars Busy Philipps (Audrey, Dawson’s Creek).

The Vampire Diaries was created by Kevin Williamson (creator, Dawson’s Creek).

The Beautiful Life stars Mischa Barton (Marissa, The O.C.)

Mercy stars Michelle Trachtenberg (Georgina, Gossip Girl).

Jonathon Trent (with two Os, not an A) is hardly from The O.C. He played Kyle in 3 episodes.  I don’t even remember him.
