Fun Fact

5 03 2010

While nearly all the teen dramas started with main characters who were siblings or would become siblings, every single one did begin with main characters who had some form of absentee parents.

On Beverly Hills 90210, Kelly’s dad took off when she little.

With Dawson’s Creek, Joey’s mother died when she was thirteen and her father was in prison. Jen’s parents sent her to Capeside to live with her grandmother.

Ryan’s father was in prison on The O.C. and his mom kicked him out of the house and soon took off. Summer’s mom abandoned her and her dad she was thirteen.

On One Tree Hill, Peyton’s mom died when she was 8 and her dad spent long periods of time away at sea. Brooke’s parents were often out of town as well. Lucas didn’t really have a dad in Dan.

Serena and Eric’s dad was MIA while Blair’s father lived in France and Chuck’s mom was dead (or so he thinks).

On 90210, Silver’s dad Mel appeared to be out of the picture while Dixon’s biological parents were who-knows-where.

Almost all these “absentee parents” led to much drama on the shows. But it’s worth noting that even the “2-parent households” had their problems, too!

Spoiler: Ask Ausiello

RELEVANT QUESTIONS–DON’T READ IF YOU DON’T WANT TO KNOW!!!

Question: Is something going to happen between Dan and Blair on Gossip Girl? Or were you just pulling our legs? —Janice
Ausiello:
Maybe a little of both? I asked executive producer Stephanie Savage about the possibility of a Dan/Blair hook-up down the line, and here’s what she said: “There are only so many combinations [you can explore] on the show, so I think you have to be open to all of them at some point. So, certainly, we have an open mind when it comes to them… Those two are really gold when they’re together. They have great on-screen chemistry.”

Question: I need some scoop on Gossip Girl. More importantly, good news about Chuck/Blair. —Vanessa
Ausiello:
I’m going to let executive producer Stephanie Savage take this one. “The good news about Chuck and Blair is that when we come back [on March 8] they’ve got a really incredible run with each other. They’re [involved] in a very emotional storyline regarding the mystery lady at Bart’s grave. They solve that mystery together and it’s a great example of Chuck and Blair working together and being very emotionally supportive of each other.”

Question: Is it true that Chuck and Blair break up again on Gossip Girl? —Mary
Ausiello:
I will neither confirm nor deny that particular rumor on the grounds that it’s too spoilery. Besides, it’s also kind of a non-issue since any Chuck/Blair break-up will undoubtedly be followed by a reunion at some point. Isn’t that right, Stephanie Savage? “We really feel like those guys are made for each other,” she tells me. “But it’s not going to be an easy ride because of their personalities and their dynamic. It’s our job to throw some good obstacles in their path, but we always root for them to find their way back to each other.”

Question: Any scoop on Southland? Love that show. —Yasmin
Ausiello:
The March 16 episode is a big one for Ben McKenzie and his alter ego, Ben Sherman. The former gets to sink his teeth into some meaty material when the latter goes out on patrol alone for the first time and gets a little too invested in a domestic violence case.

McKenzie played Ryan on The O.C.

Southland also stars Michael Cudlitz (Tony, Beverly Hills 90210).

News Roundup: One Tree Hill, Gossip Girl, The O.C. and More

24 02 2010
  • E! Online spoke with CW head honcho Dawn Ostroff about the chances of Life Unexpected and Melrose Place being renewed. Unfortunately, One Tree Hill wasn’t discussed–or, if it was, it wasn’t include in the article.
  • WECT and Star News report a CBS pilot will be filmed at Screen Gems Studios this spring, the same place that houses the One Tree Hill sets. One Tree Hill should be finished filming for the season by then but I’m not sure they’d be affected anyway. (I don’t know how big Screen Gems is but it’s noteworthy that only one major series has filmed there at a time–first Dawson’s Creek and then One Tree Hill.) Also keep in mind that where a pilot films isn’t necessarily where the series will film, if it is indeed ordered as a series.
  • WECT also has an article on Wilmington’s “film industry” being stable “with or without One Tree Hill.”
  • Deadline Hollywood and The Hollywood Reporter both say Chace Crawford (Nate, Gossip Girl) and Michael Cassidy (Zach, The O.C.) are in the running to play Captain American. I’ve seen rumors recently that Chad Michael Murray (Lucas, One Tree Hill) and Rob Buckley (Clay, One Tree Hill) were also being considered but I didn’t post them because they were just that–rumors, and from sites whose credibility I couldn’t vouch for. These two sites, however, I frequent regularly and are well-respected in the entertainment news industry.
  • Chuck/Blair (Gossip Girl), Nate/Blair (Gossip Girl) and Ryan/Marissa (The O.C.) are the only teen drama couples remaining in E! Online’s TV’s Top Couples tournament. (David/Donna and Dylan/Brenda, both of Beverly Hills 90210, were eliminated.)
  • Josh Schwartz (creator/executive producer, Gossip Girl; The O.C.) is reportedly working on a remake of the film Endless Love.
  • There is an article on Benjamin McKenzie (Ryan, The O.C.) in the new issue of TV Guide Magazine.
  • Dawson’s Creek is included in TVGuide.com’s TV’s Biggest Blunders photogallery for losing sexual “tension a-plenty when its lead characters hooked up.”

Fun Fact

19 02 2010

Five of the six teen dramas began with main characters who were siblings or would become siblings.

On Beverly Hills 90210 we have twins Brenda and Brandon, while on 90210 there’s Annie and her adopted brother Dixon. The original also had Kelly and David as step-siblings while the new show made Annie and Dixon share a half-sibling with Naomi.

On The O.C., Seth found a brother in Ryan when the Cohens became his guardian.

One Tree Hill has half-brothers Lucas and Nathan.

And Gossip Girl has Dan and Jenny as well as Serena and Eric, along with quite a few pairs of step-siblings, some involving Chuck (with Serena and Eric) and Blair (with non-main character Aaron). And, of course, Dan and Jenny became step-siblings with Serena and Eric.

The lone exception is Dawson’s Creek. No original main characters as siblings in Capeside.

But DC is one of four teen dramas that introduced a baby sibling when the first child, the main character, was in high school or older.

On BH90210, Kelly was between her junior and senior years of high school while David was between his sophomore and junior years when they got a baby half-sister, Erin, now known on 90210 as Silver.

Dawson was a senior in high school when his parents had Lily.

Seth and Ryan were out of high school when the Cohens had Sophie.

Lucas was graduating high school when his mom had a baby girl, also named Lily.

Remains to be seen whether Gossip Girl and 90210 will continue the trend!

  • Korbi is asking readers if One Tree Hill should return for an 8th season.
  • Hollywood Life (::cringe::) has an article in support of an 8th season (which really stems from an unfair poll they ran last week).
  • The TV Addict also has piece supporting One Tree Hill (and Life Unexpected).
  • Us Weekly (::shudder::) has a short interview with Shantel VanSanten (Quinn, One Tree Hill).
  • AnnaLynne McCord (Naomi, 90210) is on the cover of Shape Magazine, which Crushable.com thinks was photo-shopped.
  • John Schneider (Liam’s step-dad, 90210) will star in a pilot for Spike called Back Nine.
  • Shannen Doherty (Brenda, Beverly Hills 90210) spoke to PEOPLE.com about her fashion style and her admiration of Lady Gaga.
  • ShelterPop has an article on the Beverly Hills 90210 beach apartment being for sale. In addition to saying that it is indeed separate apartments (the listing I posted earlier this month said it was one house), there’s a picture of the inside–and it looks nothing like what we saw on the show. The intro also describes it as “Donna and David’s beachfront pad”–an odd choice considering David lived there for just one season while Donna and Kelly lived there, albeit off-and-on, for six.
  • The Wall Street Journal has an interview with Benjamin McKenzie (Ryan, The O.C.) about Southland.
  • Shutter Island, starring Michelle Williams (Jen, Dawson’s Creek) will be released in theaters tomorrow.
