Exclusive: One Tree Hill’s Lisa Goldstein Says Millie Should Be Mrs. McFadden

13 09 2009

In just two seasons, Lisa Goldstein went from new girl on the block to a full-fledged member of One Tree Hill. Now, as she embarks on her third season, Goldstein discusses adjusting to fame, what she has in common with the quirky yet lovable Millicent Huxtable and why she’s in agreement with co-star Lee Norris.

TeenDramaWhore: Pre-One Tree Hill, you primarily appeared in musicals. What made you switch to TV?

Lisa Goldstein: I never really decided to “make the switch.” I have a degree in musical theatre and that is the genre I kept getting cast in. I freelanced with television and film agents when I lived in both New York and Orlando. I was constantly auditioning for TV and film while performing in professional theatre.  My agent in Orlando called and told me there was an audition for One Tree Hill, and told me I could either audition for the receptionist or the quirky fashion assistant, “Millicent”. I jumped at the chance to audition for the “quirky assistant”, I thought it would be fun. I put myself on tape and a week later heard that I had booked the role. I had my friend Nicole listen to the voicemail my agent left because I didn’t believe it. It seemed too easy!!

TDW: What are some of the biggest differences between working in theater and working on a weekly television show?

Goldstein: There are so many!! But, two of the biggest are rehearsal time and the size of your performance. I was used to having weeks of rehearsal, and on a TV set you have about five minutes. It was quite a shock to not be able to rehearse the scenes over and over before performing them. Also, in front of an audience you have to project your voice and performance to the back of the theatre, but in front of a camera everything is so much more subtle. I’d look like a total idiot if I performed in front of a camera the way I do in front of an audience. Being too big in front of the camera is actually a big fear of mine. A lot of directors come on set and tell me to be bigger and to do more.

TDW: What is it like working in Wilmington when fans are such a constant presence?

Goldstein: It is both flattering and overwhelming. I’m pretty shy in front of new people, so to have have all these people around who know my name is a lot for me. But it’s also wonderful to know that people have taken to Millie.

TDW: How do you think Millicent has changed over the 2 seasons we’ve seen her?

Goldstein: She is much more confident and I think she has Mouth [Lee Norris] to thank for that. She found someone to love her quirks and all, which made her perfectly OK with being exactly who she is. She has also become more accomplished at work and gained more responsibility which helps with the confidence as well.

TDW: What was your reaction last season when you found out Millie slept with Joe Manganiello’s Owen? (Episode 6.13: Things A Mama Don’t Know)

Goldstein: I pretty much had a heart attack. Just kidding! I honestly thought it was kind of a weird choice it seemed to come out of nowhere, but I trust Mark [Schwahn]. I know it made the season much more interesting for Lee and me. Things were getting a little stagnant and Millie and Mouth needed something big to happen, and that is exactly what did it.

TDW: What can you tell us about Millie’s story this season?

Goldstein: Ooooooooooooh! I can tell you it’s good….reeeeeeeeallly good!!

TDW: Do you have a favorite scene, storyline or memory from the set?

Goldstein: My favorite storyline is this year’s, and I’m SWORN to secrecy. : ) I also loved the stuff in the episode where Millie finds Gigi in Mouth’s bed [Episode 6.10, Even Fairytale Characters Would Be Jealous].

TDW: Lee Norris said he wants Millie to end up Mrs. McFadden. Do you agree?

Goldstein: Yes, absolutely. They’re great for each other. They fought for each other when times got really tough. They respect each other’s profession and are so supportive of one another. And they are in love.

TDW: Do you share any similarities with Millie?

Goldstein: I think it’s really hard not to have similarities with the character’s I play. I was taught to always bring a little bit of “me” to every character. So I certainly have similarities with Millie. I am a diligent worker, I am loyal, and can be pretty shy. However, I am not neurotic or jealous, and I don’t snore for exactly seven minutes at 2AM every night. : )

TDW: How has it been dealing with the loss and addition of cast members?

Goldstein: I never really worked with Chad [Michael Murray, Lucas] or Hilarie [Burton, Peyton]. I miss seeing them around set, but since I never had scenes with them it’s not all that different for me personally. The addition of cast members has been wonderful. I work with Jana Kramer, who plays Alex, a lot. We have a lot of fun together, she is hilarious.

TDW: Once OTH ends, do you plan on focusing on your strictly-acting career or do you plan on going back to musicals?

Goldstein: I hope to do both. I love doing TV and I love doing theatre, and hopefully, once One Tree Hill ends, I can continue to do both.

TDW: Will you ever get the chance to sing on OTH?  Or maybe release an album?

Goldstein: Since there are already two female cast members that sing [Bethany Joy Galeotti, Haley; Kate Voegele, Mia], I highly doubt I’ll ever sing on the show, but you never know. I also don’t really have any desire to release an album. I’d rather just sing on stage, but… again… you never know.

TDW: Do you have a Twitter account or any interest in getting one?

Goldstein: I had a twitter account for about 2.5 seconds and couldn’t stand it. So no I don’t have one and I don’t plan on getting one.

Come back tomorrow for a live-blog of One Tree Hill’s season 7 premiere and come back again next Sunday for another exclusive interview!

News Roundup: One Tree Hill, 90210, Gossip Girl, Dawson’s Creek and More

  • I have decided that future Trivia Nights will only be held on Mondays and Tuesdays *when the episodes are repeats.*  If there’s a new episode, there won’t be trivia.  If it’s a repeat, I’ll host trivia.  This seemed like the most fair and least-stressful way to do it.  During long hiatuses, however, such as the summer off-season, we will go back to weekly games.  I will always post about a Trivia Night the morning of, so keep your eyes peeled, and I’ll give a heads-up in advance whenever possible.
  • Check out Mark Schwahn’s preview of One Tree Hill’s season premiere.
  • Taylor Momsen (Jenny, Gossip Girl) and her band Pretty Reckless played a show in New York tonight as part of Fashion’s Night Out.

  • The Vampire Diaries is being described as “Twlight for the 90210 and Dawson’s Creek crowd” and an “updated Dawson’s Creek with fangs.” There’s more comparisons here.
  • I thought this was a funny observation from Obama’s press conference last night: “The reaction to Obama on the part of some of his partisan foes is now making Bush derangement syndrome look like a hot and heavy Dawson’s Creek romance.”
  • Mischa Barton (Marissa, The O.C.) has a new post on her blog–her first one since July.
  • TVGuide.com has an interview with Jeri Ryan (Charlotte, The O.C.) on her role in Leverage.

Exclusive: Colin Fickes on Playing Jimmy Edwards, One Tree Hill’s School Shooter

30 08 2009

Colin Fickes made teen drama history when he starred on One Tree Hill as Jimmy Edwards, a high school outcast turned school shooter.  The storyline remains one of the most-loved by critics and fans alike, giving Colin one of his career highlights.

Colin was kind enough to provide an inside look at the making of “With Tired Eyes, Tired Minds, Tired Souls, We Slept,” the 16th episode of One Tree Hill’s third season.

TeenDramaWhore: Years before you started on One Tree Hill, you appeared on two episodes of Dawson’s Creek (Episode 2.3, Alternative Lifestyles and Episode 2.9, The Election).  How did that come about?

Colin Fickes: First off, thank you for taking the time to interview me!  I grew up in Raleigh, NC doing community theater and I’d audition for projects that came through NC.  I had a wonderful agent in Raleigh who would submit young actors in the area for various TV and film projects. They were seeing people in LA and NC for the role of Kenny Reiling, and I was lucky enough to get to audition and subsequently land the part.

TDW: On One Tree Hill, you were introduced in the first few episodes and then were off-canvas until season three in 2006.  What was your reaction when you found out a) they were bringing you back and b) what the storyline was?

Fickes: I was completely shocked when I found out that Mark Schwahn wanted to reintroduce the character of Jimmy Edwards.  I remember getting called into his office on the Warner Brothers lot, having no clue what the meeting would entail.  He pitched me his brilliant idea, and I immediately said yes.  I knew that it would be a tough few weeks of preparation and filming, but I was up for the challenge.  I enjoy playing interesting character roles, and where he wanted to go with Jimmy Edwards was exactly where I wanted to be.

TDW: Was it difficult filming such an emotional storyline and/or difficult to keep it all a secret?

Fickes: It was definitely a challenge to go to those dark places and stay true to the character.  There are places inside of yourself you have to explore, and they aren’t necessarily pretty places.   The fact that there are people who feel the way Jimmy must of felt made me strive to be as authentic and honest as possible.  My hope was that if people could see themselves mirrored in the character, they would also see the hope and optimism in there too. That they could see they weren’t alone and that it would, or could, all be okay. The fact that I had pretty much locked myself away for those weeks leading up to filming, I really didn’t have time to worry about keeping the story line a secret.  The twist didn’t really have anything to do with my character and his circumstances, so I didn’t really focus on that part.

TDW: Allison Scagliotti (Abby) told me that you guys didn’t know the ending until it was nearly time to shoot it.  How did you react when you found out your character’s fate?

Fickes: I knew my characters fate from the get go.  What we didn’t know was that Dan [Paul Johansson] would show up and shoot Keith [Craig Sheffer].  I think I was too busy learning lines and finding character to worry too much about the twist.  It was pretty shocking though, yeah?

TDW: How does it feel to know your character was the key to so many critical storylines that followed and still occur?

Fickes: To know that Jimmy Edwards life wasn’t in vain and that he affected so many people, hopefully for the better, is a good thing.  I think it’s indicative of real life.  People can come into our lives and shape our courses, even if it is only for a brief amount of time

TDW: What kind of response did you get when the episode aired?

Fickes: The response has been incredibly heartfelt.  When people take the time to write letters, or stop me on the street to tell me how that episode affected them, it truly moves me.  It makes it seem all worth it.  I think that’s why we make art.  To connect and feel.

TDW: Are you still recognized for the role?

Fickes: I am.

TDW: Do you keep in touch with any of the cast?

Fickes: I don’t really.  Not as much as I’d like to anyway.  Had dinner with Hilarie [Burton, Peyton] and some mutual friends a year or so ago, and talk to Lee [Norris, Mouth] every now and then, but that’s about it.

TDW: What projects are you currently working on?

Fickes: At the moment I’m developing a screenplay and a short film with a friend of mine.  Had an independent film called “The New Twenty” come out on DVD and VOD not too long ago.  Trying to keep the dream alive.

For more on One Tree Hill’s school shooting storyline,

check out my interviews with Lee Norris and Allison Scagliotti.

Come back next Sunday for another exclusive interview!

Spoiler: You Ask, I Answer

21 08 2009

RELEVANT QUESTIONS–DON’T READ IF YOU DON’T WANT TO KNOW!!!

90210“! What can you tell me about my Kelly Taylor? She’s not getting back with Ryan, is she? -Elisabeth
Not anytime soon, no. Ryan’s preoccupied with that witch, Jen Clark, right now. Kelly, however, has a new crush too. Seems her rumored feelings for Harry Wilson are the real thing. I’m told K.T. will big time struggle with her attraction to West Bev’s married principal this fall.

Thanks for the scoop on Jackie Taylor returning to “90210.” I am definitely one of the old school fans who thinks the more veteran characters, the better! -Renay
I feel you on that. Unfortunately, I’m hearing everyone’s favorite former TV cokehead may not be long for this world. Word is, Jackie Taylor is sick. Very, very sick. And I guess she just really wants to reconcile with her daughters before it’s too late.

Good work on the “One Tree Hill” interview with Mark Schwahn and Sophia Bush. I was so sure that Rachel and Dan were going to be together and have a baby, but I’m really relieved to hear that’s not happening. -Sal
Yeah, Mark definitely said the Rachel-Dan baby scenario is untrue. But that doesn’t mean Rachel and Dan won’t be together. Actually, I’m pretty sure they’ll be sitting in a tree, K-I-S-S-I-N-G this season…

***

Need to vent: I *hate* how they’ve ruined the Jackie Taylor character. On the original show, her drug addiction was for part of the very first season. For the next nine seasons, she was completely clean and a supportive mom to Kelly and Erin. I hate how the new show changed that, essentially rewriting history. They’ve done this was many characters/stories now.  Every time, it’s such an insult to longtime fans and the show’s now-almost 20-year-history.  I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: they should’ve left the original stories the way they had ended.

Mark Schwahn on Naley

20 08 2009

“You know, when we started the show, we were coming on the heels of “Dawson’s Creek.” They were shooting their finale when we were shooting our pilot, so when people saw our first episode, they were sure that Haley and Lucas would be together, because Dawson and Joey had [a similar dynamic]. But we had always designed it as Nathan and Haley. In my mind, Nathan and Haley have always been a cornerstone of the show.”

**Thanks to Christy-Anne for providing the One Tree Hill accounts**

Here’s some tips on spotting a fake account: First, see if it has the Twitter verified seal on it. All celebrities have been encouraged to register with the company in order to show their legitimacy. If they don’t have the seal, check with TruthTweet and Valebrity, two very reputable databases of celebrity accounts. Lastly, check with official sites for the network, show and the celebs themselves. If they are not confirmed in any of those places, odds are they fake. Additionally, if the account in question is following any of the fake ones above, odds are that it is fake, too.

Being a journalist, I have access to the publicists and managers that most don’t have.  I will continue to contact them as necessary to confirm or deny accounts but please do you part: do not follow fake accounts but spread the word that they are in fact fake!

You can follow me @sizzlemaker.
