Exclusive: Helen Ward Reveals the Secrets Behind Peyton’s Artwork on One Tree Hill

13 12 2009

As I watch and rewatch certain episodes of One Tree Hill, I never tire of seeing Peyton’s artwork. Even when you take out the connections it has to the storyline, the artistic talent there still just blows me away. I always wondered just who was responsible for it and so I did what all the Millenials do: I googled it.

Lo and behold, I came across the name Helen Ward and tracked her down via her Web site. Helen was kind enough to take some out of her busy schedule to give TDW the behind-the-scenes dish on creating art for One Tree Hill.

TeenDramaWhore: What was the process of joining One Tree Hill as an artist?  Surely it’s not the same as casting an actress, right?

Helen Ward: Before joining OTH, I had already worked as a set designer, storyboard artist and illustrator for a number of films.  But I still had to try out for the job.  I think they asked a bunch of people to give their shot at a particular drawing.  They were pretty specific about what they were looking for. I guess my work was closest. I got the job.

TDW: Did you try to get to know Hilarie Burton (Peyton) before drawing for her character?  Or was it more important just to understand the character?

Ward: I did not try and get to know Hilarie.  She is a talented actress and has done a great job with the character.  But it was the character I was drawing for and I learned what I needed to from the show and the scripts.

TDW: What is the process of drawing for a particular episode?  Does Burton, creator Mark Schwahn or anyone else give any input?

Ward: Mostly Robbie Beck, the props master for OTH, would contact me about drawings for the show.  Mark Schwahn always knew exactly what he wanted and it would be described in the script. So Robbie would send me the info and I would initially do some quick sketches.  Almost all of our communication was via e-mail.  I wish I could say something more exciting, like Hilarie and I would chat about what Peyton would be drawing, but the only time I ever spoke with her was when they were filming at my house in Wilmington (which oddly enough was Peyton’s house on the show.)   But I didn’t mention to her that I was her “ghost artist.”

TDW: In scenes that show Peyton drawing or painting, is she actually just going over your work?

Ward: When Peyton is shown drawing on camera, there would likely be very light lines for her to follow. Often I would give a finished version and an unfinished for this purpose.  If I remember correctly, it was usually the words that I left undone.

TDW: How has Peyton’s art evolved over the years?

Ward: I look back at the first season and think the drawings are awful!  I certainly became more comfortable working in her style, but I think her style also evolved to fit mine. Does that make sense? Initially I was trying to do something that just didn’t flow well from me.  The drawings were too clean. A little forced and not at all the way I liked to work.  But as the show progressed, I began to put more of my own style in them.   I became more comfortable and the work got better.

TDW: Do you have a favorite drawing or episode?

Ward: So my least favorite are just about anything from the first season, and my favorites are the very last drawings I did for the show [Episode 6.19, Letting Go].  Peyton does the panels of certain scenes from her past with Lucas [Chad Michael Murray].  I really had fun with those.  Each page had multiple panels and told a longer story than the single frame images that made up most of the previous work. Plus it was nice to come full circle.  I think my first drawing for the show was “You don’t know me.” One of those last ones was a version of that as well.   That was a fun five years.  I’m a little sad that Peyton has moved on.

TDW: Most people don’t know you’re behind all the artwork, right?

Ward: And who am I going to tell that I am behind the artwork?  I don’t think most people think about all the work that happens behind the scenes.  And it should be that way. The viewers should be caught up in the show.  Anyway, it doesn’t come up much.  I do have a niece who thinks it’s pretty cool.  And I impressed a bunch of third-graders at career day at my daughter’s school.  But they were much more excited by the work I did for the Hannah Montana movie.  Go figure.

TDW: Now that Burton has left the show, does it mean we won’t be seeing any more of your work?

Ward: I have been very busy with a variety of projects. I’ve done a number of portraits for movies, which is probably my favorite type of work. I just finished up work for “The Lottery Ticket,” [which is] currently being filmed in Atlanta.  Some of that work was like what I have done for OTH.  One of the characters is supposed to have created a whole bunch of sketches.  I think they are hanging in his bedroom.  I also did a huge religious painting that hangs in a church scene. (That was fun.)  I will eventually post more of this current work to my Web site.

TDW: What other projects do you work on or will you be working on?

Ward: I feel supremely lucky to do what I do.  I love drawing and couldn’t be happier than when I am working on a project, drawing away and listening to music.  And drawing for OTH was exceptional. It wasn’t just a one-time gig for a movie that is out in theaters for a couple weeks. It was ongoing and evolving. Although I had nothing to do with the concepts behind Peyton’s art, and her drawings are a tiny part of the show,  I have to admit I have loved hearing that people out there have connected with the artwork.  I have received e-mails from OTH fans who say they love to draw and the artwork on the show is really important to them.  How cool is that?!

Come back next week for another exclusive interview!

Exclusive: One Tree Hill’s Lee Norris Answers YOUR Questions!

8 11 2009

This was the third time I’ve interviewed Lee Norris (Mouth, One Tree Hill) but I can’t say “third time’s a charm” because he’s been charming every time.  And this time around, as we caught up on the phone, he was gracious enough to answer questions submitted by YOU!

TeenDramaWhore: Since we just spoke a few months ago, today I thought I would do things a little bit differently.  I asked my readers, your fans, to send in questions. So this is coming directly from them.

Lee Norris: Alright, very cool.

TDW: So Em wants to know: Do you hang out with any of your One Tree Hill costars in your  free time?

Norris: Yeah, absolutely. We’re a tight-knit family and we’ve worked together for going on seven years here so we definitely hang out. Sophia [Bush, Brooke] is a great friend of mine and we have new faces now like Austin [Nichols, Julian], who’s a good kid. You know, pretty much everyone.  We all hang out when we can. We work different schedules.

TDW: Okay, and Zella wants to know: In last week’s episode, Mouth got the idea of doing his own sports webshow/website as his new career path, and she’s wondering what web-series, podcasts, and websites do you pay attention to in real-life. And if you are into web 2.0 & social media like we are.

Norris: That’s a good question. I’m not a huge blog-follower. Other than, of course, TeenDramaWhore, a big shout-out there.

TDW: Thank you!

Norris: But I don’t go to too many blog sites. My girlfriend reads some of that stuff and will send interesting things to me so I pretty much rely on her. But otherwise, I’m pretty typical, you know, ESPN.com viewer and I try to keep up with a couple of my favorite bands’ blogs in terms of their upcoming concerts and things like diaries that they’re doing and stuff.  So that kind of thing. I’m not a huge–like I don’t do Twitter. I think it’s a really cool thing and I just don’t think I’m exciting enough to have a Twitter personally.

TDW: Awww.

Norris: I don’t. I just feel like, I don’t know. Maybe people would be interested. I guess they probably would considering I have a really cool job and work with some pretty cool people but otherwise I don’t think they really care about me eating my chicken sandwich from Chik-fil-A.

TDW: You never know.  Lauren wants to know if the cast is planning on doing anymore tours or charity events?

Norris: You know, those kinds of things have always been driven by our producers. They’re really the force behind that, and the network. So it’s not typically up to the cast, but, that being said, I would love to go out and do any of those kind of things because anytime we get to go out and see the fans face-to-face, it’s obviously the best part of the job for me, to get to meet all of our fans because they’re the reason we’ve been around for so long and it’s nice when you can step outside of this little world we have in Wilmington and see that what we’re doing on this little soundstage is affecting people that live in other countries. It’s just amazing to see that it affects people in a real-life way. So I’d be all for that. And I really want–I’d really like to some, you know, we’ve been over the states quite a bit but it’d be nice to sort of go out and do some international stuff.

TDW: And Lauren also wants to know if you are interested in directing an episode.

Norris: Yeah. I would eventually like to move into directing. It’s been really fun to work with James [Lafferty, Nathan] and Soph and [Bethany Joy Galeotti, Haley] and Paul [Johansson, Dan] and watch them do it. I’m the kind of person–I’m like a major organizer and preparer. I don’t typically like to take something on until I feel like I’ve learned every possible thing about it, and directing is such a huge task that I feel like I’m still sort of figuring that whole world out. I’m observing a lot and trying to learn as much as I can, so that if the opportunity comes along, that, you know, obviously I can do–I can hopefully do–a great job. But, yeah, I’d be interested in that eventually.

TDW: A reader by the username of g90210th wants to know: Besides Mouth, who is your favorite character currently on the show, and why?

Norris: Ooh, that’s a good question! Wow. I don’t know. Is it really bad to say that Dan is my favorite character?

TDW: Not at all!  That’s totally fine.

Norris: I don’t know, it’s kind of weird. I don’t know.  I’m always, you know, intrigued as to what’s going on in that man’s mind because he’s just so…Obviously I don’t like him at all but I’m always sort of waiting to see what he’s got up his sleeve and currently kind of interesting to me is, is he really the bad guy in his relationship  right now or is Rachel [Dannel Harris] the bad guy?  They’re both pretty bad. That’s kind of interesting to me at the moment so I guess I’ll go with Dan. I bet most people wouldn’t pick Mouth to say that.

TDW: Keren wants to know: If you could be in any TV series beside OTH, which series would it be? Which character?

Norris: Okay, I’d definitely would love to be on True Blood, which is a show about vampires. I would definitely want to be–well, first of all it’s set in the South and I’m from the South so I definitely just want to be a cool, majorly-centuries-old vampire that’s really really bad-ass, I guess. I don’t know. I didn’t get swept away in the whole Twilight thing but the True Blood craze is pretty cool.  It’s a neat show.

TDW: Keren also wants to know: If you could visit any country in the world right now, which country would it be?

Norris: That’s a good question, too.  Gosh, you know I’ve always wanted to go to Australia but I’ve never been. I almost studied abroad there in college and it fell through at the last minute. I’ve heard wonderful things about the people and the beaches and the weather.  I’d like to do that. It’s just a long flight from here. There’s a number of places I’d like to go but  I’ve been lucky to travel to some great countries already and Australia’s one of the ones, unfortunately, I haven’t been to yet.

TDW: Becky wants to know: How has the cast changed this season with the departure of Chad [Michael Murray, Lucas] and Hilarie [Burton, Peyton] and the addition of some of the new actors?

Norris: Obviously we miss Chad and Hil because we worked for them for six years and, you know, it’s tough to say goodbye to people after that long  but, you know, I think One Tree Hill is really an ensemble show at its core. I think there’s enough of “old people” around that the show still has interesting stories left to tell about the characters. And I think you still feel the presence of Lucas and Peyton from time to time, which is important. In terms of the new characters, you know, I feel like they’ve tried to balance so you’re not completely immersed in new storylines only without the old stuff. Obviously, you know, Rob Buckley’s character Clay just had a huge revelation in terms of you finding out he’s been married and his wife passed away tragically, and I think that was a really smart way to introduce that character because certainly it’s hard enough to deal with that and obviously he’s kind of good to Nathan and Haley who are a big core part of the show. So I think that’s interesting ,and Jana Kramer [Alex] is really funny and has a lot of energy as Alex so I think they’re doing a good job of balancing the new characters so far.

TDW: Okay.  A different Lauren wants to know: When the show eventually ends, what are your plans?

Norris: Well, my plans are hopefully to continue acting because I love it. It’s a passion of mine and I’d like to continue doing it for as along as I can. And I certainly wouldn’t mind moving behind the camera, as I said, to directing. I’d look for those opportunities.

TDW: Okay, this one’s a little bit longer.  Lauren also wants to know: If you could describe each of your castmates with one word, what would it be?

Norris: Oh, wow. Okay, I’ll try. This is going to be like word association. It’s going to be like right off the bad.  So, each cast member?

TDW: Yes.

Norris: Okay. For Sophia I would say intelligent. For Austin I would say wily–in a good way. I guess that’s more than one word but anyway. For James I would say focused. Let’s see.  Gosh, I’m trying to think. We have so many cast members! For Rob I would say polite. For Lisa [Goldstein, Millicent] I would say genuine. For Paul I would say mischievous.  For Antwon [Tanner, Skills] I would say talkative. (laughs) Who am I missing? Oh, I haven’t done Joy. Oh gosh.  That’s a tough one. Let’s see.  What would I say about Joy? I would say she is…gosh, I would say, I don’t know.  She’s like such a unique person and complex. Let’s go with multi-talented.

TDW: Yeah, she definitely has that going for.

Norris: She does.  The girl is like–I don’t know if people know this but she just put together like a Broadway musical pretty much.

TDW: I know! I’m looking forward to seeing it. I hope it goes far.

Norris: She’s insanely talented. Is that everybody?

TDW: Yeah, I think you got the core cast down really well.

Norris: Oh, Shantel [VanSanten, Quinn]. I didn’t do Shantel.  She’s glamorous.

TDW: Okay. And what can you tell us about your storyline for the rest of this season?

Norris: Well I can tell you that Mouth’s in a bit of a predicament right now because he just lost his job after sticking up for Nathan. So he’s gotta figure out his career path and obviously in the last episode Julian sort of planted a seed in him, thinking about the internet so it’s going to be interesting to see if he can pick that up and run with it. And certainly I think also really important to him is obviously his relationship with Millicent and she’s starting to go down a little bit of a questionable path here after being introduced to this modeling world. How is he going to maintain this relationship with the girl that he loves but who’s changing right before his eyes? He’s got a lot to deal with. There’s no shortage of drama in Tree Hill, you know that.

TDW: And lastly, do you have any message for the fans?

Norris: Well, obviously anytime I get a chance to say anything to the fans, after seven years, we have to say thank you.  They are absolutely without a doubt the reason we’re still on the air and I just thank them for their passion and their support because obviously, you know, this is a lot of fun for this. This is a job and we appreciate the fact that you guys let us into your homes every week. So I would say thank you because I don’t think I’ll ever be able say to say thank you enough.

TDW: Well, thank you so much, Lee.  I really appreciate you taking the time to do this.

Norris: Of course, Shari. It’s always fun to talk to you so keep up the good work.

TDW: Thank you.  I hope you’ll continue to check out the site.

Norris: I will. I love it when you interview my friends.

TDW: They have such great things to say about you!

Norris: It’s pretty nice. Alright, Shari, take care!

TDW: Thank you, you too!

Come back Tuesday for another exclusive interview!

News Roundup: One Tree Hill, Gossip Girl, 90210 and More

3 11 2009
  • Be sure to check out The CW’s site for all the new video content this week.
  • Last night’s One Tree Hill (2.3 million viewers) and Gossip Girl (2.0 million viewers rounded up) each had a decent drop in the ratings compared to last week.  Gossip Girl technically didn’t even cross 2 million (again, I rounded up), tying for a season-low.
  • I will be interviewing Lee Norris (Mouth, One Tree Hill) later this week.  Since I’ve already interviewed him, I figured this time I would use reader questions.  Please comment with your question by Thursday Friday morning.  I cannot promise it will be asked but I’ll do my best!
  • The new One Tree Hill Connection podcast features an interview with OTH writer Terrence Coli.
  • I love this video interview with Sophia Bush (Brooke, One Tree Hill), where she adamantly states she isn’t on Twitter.  As you’ve seen in my Twitter Directory, there are tons of fake Sophias out there.  Frustrating!
  • Hilarie Burton (Peyton, One Tree Hill) recorded a message on SoGoPro.
  • If you haven’t seen Brett Claywell (Tim, One Tree Hill) on One Life to Live, Perez Hilton actually posted a clip.
  • In a Gossip Girl recap by the L.A. Times, both Andrea (Gabrielle Carteris, Beverly Hills 90210) and Joey (Katie Holmes, Dawson’s Creek) are compared to Vanessa (Jessica Szhor, Gossip Girl).
  • If you missed the short clip of the video for “Somebody to Love” by Leighton Meester (Blair, Gossip Girl), which aired during GG last night, E! Online posted it.
  • The Parents Television Council has sent a letter urging CW affiliates not to air next week’s episode, which will feature the reported threesome.  Seems a little preemptive (no pun intended) to me.  I can’t imagine the episode being vulgar enough to warrant this.  I imagine, like the gay kiss, it will be such a nothing thing and is really more about getting publicity and media attention (in which case, it worked).  But I guess we’ll have to wait and see!
  • You can get 10% off the cost of tickets for the Gossip Girl tour in New York City when you use the promo code TEENDRAMA.
  • TV Guide Magazine has a spoiler-filled interview with Jessica Stroup (Silver, 90210) about what happens with the Jackie (Ann Gillespie) storyline.  We all know how I feel about this so I figured I’d spare you guys the rant.
  • Ausiello has a lot more spoiler-filled details on the Adrianna (Jessica Lowndes, 90210) / Gia (Rumer Willis, 90210) storyline.
  • Kellan Lutz (George, 90210) and Nikki Reed (Sadie, The O.C.) are also featured in the Nov. issue of Nylon.
  • The O.C. made BlackBook’s list of Top 10 Single-Letter & Acronymical TV Shows.
  • Adam Brody (Seth, The O.C.) will star alongside Holmes in The Romantics.  Holmes will also produce.
  • The A.V. Club has a great interview with Chris Pratt (Che, The O.C.)

Exclusive: Access Hollywood’s Maria Menounos Talks One Tree Hill

1 11 2009

With a hand in both the entertainment industry and the non-profit sector (through her charity Take Action Hollywood), Maria Menounos is arguably one of the busiest and most successful guest-stars ever to be on a teen drama.  Both before and after her recurring role on One Tree Hill as Jules, Menounos has been one of television’s most recognizable personalities.

TeenDramaWhore: One Tree Hill was your first recurring role on a television series. What made you want to stray from hosting?

Maria Menounos: I’m the type of person who enjoys wearing a lot of different hats – acting is another hat I enjoy wearing. At Emerson College, I studied both broadcast journalism and film.

TDW: What aspects of hosting prepared you for acting?

Menounos: There are so many aspects. The technical aspects of production – going through hair and make up, having call times, dealing with crew, etc. Also, in my case, it helped me learn more about directing but, more importantly, how to be comfortable on camera.

TDW: What attracted you to the role of Jules?

Menounos: I was really excited to work with the show creator, Mark  Schwahn, who said he had an amazing role for me. I knew any role he would create would be a great one.

TDW: Were you familiar with the show before you joined?

Menounos: I had seen a few episodes but definitely enjoyed what I had seen.

TDW: Most people, plagued by the stereotypes of our society, would have a hard time believing someone like Keith (Craig Sheffer) could get a girl like Jules. That ended up being a significant part of the story. Did you agree with that premise?

Menounos: I most certainly agreed! Keith was sensitive and sweet and handsome in a rugged, real man sort of way. On a side note, Craig was also an amazing actor who had been directed by Robert Redford and co-starred with Brad Pitt amongst other greats. He was generous to work with and lent me acting tips that I implement to this day.

TDW: Did you know right from the beginning that Dan (Paul Johansson) was behind Jules and Keith’s relationship–or were you surprised, just like the viewers were?

Menounos: I knew.

TDW: We never found out where Jules went when she stood Keith up at the altar (Episode 2.16, Somehwere A Clock is Ticking). What do you think happened to her?

Menounos: She ran away, feeling bad for Keith as well as ashamed of herself and what she had done.

TDW: Was it your decision not to continue on the show, or was it dictated by the story?

Menounos: It was dictated by the story.

TDW: Did you keep up with the show after you left? Specifically, were you/are you aware of what happened to Keith?

Menounos: I’m so busy with my other shows that I wasn’t able to watch as much as I would like. However, I did find out about Keith.

TDW: Are you still in touch with any of the cast?

Menounos: I am but it’s the same as with most of my friends. It’s definitely hard to remain in touch with the schedule I keep. The news never takes a rest.

TDW: Are you ever recognized for your role on OTH, as opposed to for being a famous TV host?

Menounos: I continuously get recognized from my work on OTH. Fans are always approaching me!

TDW: After One Tree Hill, you did some voice-over work and more one-episode guest roles. Do you have any interest in returning to acting in a larger capacity?

Menounos: I just wrapped on a starring role opposite Christopher Lloyd and a few other names and talents in a comedy feature, “Serial Buddies” – the first serial killer buddy comedy of all time – lol. I really have to pick and choose roles carefully because I only have so much time each year to act. “Serial Buddies” was one of those super original scripts, kind of a “Napoleon Dynamite”/”Superbad” feel that I didn‘t want to miss out on.

TDW: You are one of an increasing number of celebrities interacting with fans on Twitter. What is one thing you like about it, and one thing you don’t?

Menounos: I like being able to communicate directly to fans, hear their opinions and receive their support.  It’s fun and allows people to get to know “me” better.

TDW: Lastly, for those not familiar, tell me about your charity, Take Action Hollywood.

Menounos: We are an all-volunteer group that essentially utilizes the power of Hollywood to affect for positive social change. We take on a wide range of subjects and causes. I’m proud of what we have achieved for a small group that puts most, if not all, of its donations towards our programs and not administrative costs.

Come back next week for another exclusive interview!

  • This article by The Frisky really nails some of my points on the problems with Gossip Girl–and why The O.C. was so much better.
  • Both Gossip Girl and 90210 made Zap2it’s list of the worst TV theme songs of current shows.

  • SoapNet also has a poll asking which girl was the best for Dylan (Luke Perry, Beverly Hills 90210).  I think you know by now that my vote will always go to Kelly (Jennie Garth, Beverly Hills 90210), as they are my all-time favorite couple.
  • They also have another poll asking which actor from The O.C. has been the most successful.

News Roundup: One Tree Hill, Gossip Girl and 90210

25 10 2009
