Favorite Valentine’s Day Episodes

10 02 2010

Like I did with the Favorite Holiday Episodes series, during the next few days I will highlight some of my favorite Valentine’s Day storylines from each of the teen dramas show-by-show. Warning: it’ll be a bumpy ride!

TODAY: Beverly Hills 90210

1. Episode 2.22, Baby Makes Five

Despite airing an episode in season 1 on Valentine’s Day itself and an episode earlier in season 2 with the name My Desperate Valentine, this is the first actual V-Day focused episode. I like this ep for both its subtle seriousness and its significance. Brenda is eagerly awaiting Valentine’s Day with Dylan (technically their second together, but as I said, we didn’t get a storyline for it in season 1) and turns out Dylan has something a bit unconventional planned: getting blood drawn. As he explains, they’re actually donating their blood in recognition of the person who donated blood for him when he was seriously injured years ago on the 14th. Today the importance of donating blood is brought up time and again by the media but here and then the message was just as important but they don’t hit you over the head with it. Meanwhile, Kelly’s mom Jackie is stressed when she finds out she’s pregnant when she and Mel have only been dating for a few months. Kelly confides in Donna who in turn tells David and soon enough Mel finds out. Mel realizes he loves Jackie and wants not only have the baby but also marry her. And thus, all these years later, we have Silver on 90210.

2. Episode 5.20, You Gotta Have Heart

This episode aired a week before Valentine’s Day but revolved around a telethon at the After Dark for children with heart issues. While most of the Kelly-in-a-cult storyline is just bad, the impact it has on her relationship with Brandon comes to a head in this ep. And when Kelly is MIA for the telethon, Brandon is forced to make out with Donna for one of the segments, which is the only time we get to see these two go at it and, boy, do they go at it! Speaking of going at it, while Donna is somewhat innocently making out with Brandon, boyfriend Ray is being seduced by Valerie.

3. Episode 6.22, Bleeding Hearts

And while most of the Kelly-on-drugs storyline is just bad as well, the impact it has on her friendship with Brandon comes to a head in this ep. His Valentine’s Day plans with Susan are ruined when a drugged-out Kelly calls him for help. With his assistance she gets into a rehab program but when she confesses she’s still in love with him, Brandon doesn’t return the sentiment. David writes Valerie the most moving poem for Valentine’s Day–seriously, I get chills when I hear or read it–but under pressure from Ginger and her blackmail scheme, Valerie encourages him to sleep with Ginger. David is incredibly shocked and hurt that Val would ask him to do such a thing and breaks up with her. This episode aired on Valentine’s Day in 1996.

4. Episode 7.19, My Funny Valentine

I like this episode for the storylines it sets up and for one that reaches its climax. The latter refers to one of the few heartfelt scenes Kelly and Valerie ever shared, as Val pleads with Kel to break up with her high school sweetheart. Cliff returns to town and finds Donna is now with David, leading to a short but sweet love triangle that continues into the next episode and results in one of my favorite D-D kisses. The ep ends with Brandon and Tracy’s V-Day happiness cut short when she finds an engagement ring and assumes it’s for her–except it’s the ring Brandon had for Kelly a few years back and couldn’t bring himself to return after she rejected him. This leads into a moving Brandon-Kelly storyline, one of my favorites, in the next episode and beyond. Oh, and Luther Vandross performs, which is perfect V-Day music.

5. Episode 8. 20, Cupid’s Arrow

So now it’s a year later and Brandon and Kelly have gotten back together…and broken up again. This episode sees them reconciling once again and, well, I’m a sucker for it! Donna and David are no longer together but they end up spending most of V-Day with each other, pissing off their significant others, Noah and Valerie. Unbeknown to either of them, Noah’s brother roofies Val’s drink and she & drunk Noah end up sleeping together, setting up a storyline for the subsequent episodes. The ep also features a cameo from Ian Ziering’s then-wife. Unfortunately, I can’t find a clip worth using as the critical, climatic parts (with B/K and Donna/Noah/Val/David) are at the end of the episode and YouTube has all but that.

Some of these episodes will be shown Sunday, during SoapNet’s Valentine’s Day Marathon.

Tomorrow we move on to Dawson’s Creek.

GOSSIP GIRL

1. Episode 1.11, Roman Holiday

In Gossip Girl’s three seasons, this is the only Christmas episode we’ve been treated to and, thankfully, I look back on it pretty fondly. At the time I was a Serena-Dan shipper (and still am, for the most part) and they had a really sweet storyline this episode, which culminated in them sharing one incredible X-mas gift: their bodies! The episode also significantly advances the Rufus-Lily storyline that had been slowly building: we have Rufus realize his marriage with Allison can’t be saved and admit Lily’s been what’s missing from his life. Unfortunately, around the same time, Bart proposes to Lily. The third main storyline–Blair’s hope for the perfect Christmas is comically toyed with when her father comes to town along with his lover–I could take or leave.

90210

1. Episode 2.12, Winter Wonderland

Okay, so this technically isn’t a holiday episode but I’m including it anyway. After all, isn’t “winter wonderland” just the PC-way of saying Christmastime? And, besides, this was a pretty amazing episode–and I never even come close to saying that about this show. But this ep had what I love most: unrequited love, love triangles and several drawn-out storylines coming to a climax, rewarding viewers for their patience. We have Teddy pining for Silver, Dixon’s feelings for Silver reawakened, Liam & Naomi reunited by a selfless Ivy, Naomi’s well-warranted apologies to Annie and a jaw-dropping confrontation between Annie and Jasper. No doubt about it: this was my gift this holiday season.

What’s your favorite holiday episode?

News Roundup: One Tree Hill, Gossip Girl, 90210 and More

18 12 2009
  • The CW declared this One Tree Hill scene from season six as its OMG Moment of the Year.
  • SoapNet is airing a One Tree Hill marathon on New Year’s Day. The promo suggests it’s all season 6 episodes. I’ll post a reminder that morning.
  • Ausiello has spoilish Joe Manganiello (Owen, One Tree Hill) news. You can probably guess–especially if you read my interview with him this summer.
  • Bethany Joy Galeotti (Haley, One Tree Hill) recorded a message for fans.
  • Everly, the band Galeotti is in, has released a new album.
  • You can vote for Haley, Brooke (Sophia Bush, One Tree Hill), Blair (Leighton Meester, Gossip Girl), Serena (Blake Lively, Gossip Girl) and Silver (Jessica Stroup, 90210) in the Girl on Top tournament.
  • Eric Daman, Gossip Girl’s costume director, has released a book.
  • This is the first time I’ve seen a picture of Kathleen Robertson (Clare, Beverly Hills 90210) at an event in a looooong time. There’s also a picture of Julie Bowen (Aunt Gwen, Dawson’s Creek).
  • The Washington Post has an interesting article on The Beautiful Life, starring Mischa Barton (Marissa, The O.C.), and its second life on YouTube.

Weekly Poll

17 12 2009

In last week’s Weekly Poll, a huge majority–nearly 70 percent–thought it was Chuck’s mother in the graveyard. While the votes were a little bit more spread out on the killing of Jasper’s uncle, most of you think Annie did it. The results were much closer on the question of Millie and Mouth’s relationship, where the winning answer (“Who cares? They are so boring!) came out on top by just 7 votes.

RELEVANT QUESTIONS–DON’T READ IF YOU DON’T WANT TO KNOW!!!

Wally in Orlando: Do you know anything about what Glee will be up to in April?
Glee is going all One Tree Hill! Don’t worry, Chad Michael Murray won’t guest star, but Finn will be playing basketball instead of football when the show returns April 13, because…football season is over, dummies! “It’s basketball now. Finn Hudson is the captain o the basketball team.” Also, we would bet some seriously good money that Adam Lambert will indeed guest star on the show, because a source who tells us everything about everything clammed up with a “no comment” when asked about the rumor that it is really happening. Quick, Chris Colfer, grab a keyboard!

K.J. in the Caribbean: When will The Secret Life of the American Teenager be back?
Jan. 4, and according to Shailene Woodley, “There might be another pregnancy, [and] a couple of weddings, hookups, breakups, all that drama.” Look for Shailene’s storylines to split between her relationship with the baby and her relationship with Ricky. Plus, Francia Raisa tells us, “There are a lot of new hookups, especially with me. I’m gonna tease you guys a lot this season. My character’s grown a lot in the season that’s coming up, and then she has a huge storyline coming up toward the end of the season. It’s really good, so dramatic, really juicy.” Any guesses about Adrian’s big twist?

Meagan in New Jersey: The spoiler chat needs more One Tree Hill. Have anything juicy to share?
I’m hearing from a source that Taylor James, Hailey and Quinn’s bad seed sister from season two, will be back! Lindsey McKeon is reprising her role as Taylor—and she’s not coming back empty handed. She might just have another James family member by her side, and wait a sec, who’s that man on her arm? Hint: You’ve definitely seen him before. Word is, Taylor will be back somewhere around episode 14.

Noelle in Normal, Ill.: Gossip Girl Insider says that a new episode will be on Jan. 4. They are liars, right?
Perhaps misinformed? We’re told that after tonight’s episode, the next new one will be Monday, March 8, per the show’s CW rep. In other more exciting Gossip Girl news, I’m told Serena’s father will come back sometime toward the end of the season. And sadly, for all you who write in week after week asking if there will be some hot and steamy Chuck and Blair sex scenes coming up, I’m still not hearing of anything scantily clad or scandalous. Now you know what to ask for from Santa!

Randall in Atlanta: 90210, please! Who is going to commit suicide?!
I can’t say who, but I can tell you that he—yes, he—is not leaving the show. So it is just a suicide attempt. In other news, the Adriana and Gia ladylove storyline starts when 90210 returns from hiatus, and Navid will wonder if he made Adrianna gay. (Apparently he isn’t aware how such things work!) I’m told that Silver and Teddy develop a full-fledged relationship, but of course, they will have their complications…

Nell in Watsonville, Calif.: Any scoop on 90210? I’m addicted!
We’ll be meeting Liam’s slickster ex-con father in an upcoming episode. (Ex Duke of Hazzard John Schneider plays Liam’s stepfather, in case you were confused.) Got any dream casting for the part?

Notes:

Shailene Woodley played the original Kaitlin on The O.C.

Both Haley and Adrianna are spelled incorrectly.

We already know Taylor is coming back, based on the preview we saw last night, and it’s presumably in the January 18th episode which is number 13.

The statement that whoever attempts suicide on 90210 is not leaving the show contradicts the Mega Buzz spoiler that says said person–or at least a related person–is leaving the show.
