4 05 2010RELEVANT QUESTIONS–DON’T READ IF YOU DON’T WANT TO KNOW!!!
Hey Korbi. So the evil Jen Clark is back in Beverly Hills, as you warned. What’s the big thing she’s hiding? -Melanie
An expanding belly. I mean, maybe she’s just been stress eating. Or, perhaps, she’s pregnant … with the baby of someone we know.
I was kind of annoyed to see Liam forgive Naomi on “90210” because those two have no chemistry. -KT
Then you’ll be pleased to hear that Liomi isn’t long for this world. He may have said he forgives her, but I’m hearing that the last straw is right around the corner.
And, p.s., when stepdaddy dearest notices that those crazy expensive coins are missing, it’s Annie whom Liam will turn to for support.
Have we finally seen the last of psycho Jasper? -Beav
Nope! Jasper — or as I like to call him, Emily Valentine 2.0 — won’t go quietly. And he may even take a page from E.V. when it comes to revenge plots. You’ll see.
Any scoop on No Drama Adrianna? -Jeff M.
Ade’s going to start dating a musician pretty soon. His name is Javier and things between them will heat up quickly — and then burn out. I believe a reunion with Navid is in the cards before the season ends.
So is this Silver-Teddy thing finally fizzling thanks to Ryan O’Neal? -Michele
Teddy’s dad — played by TV legend Ryan O’Neal, yes — will do his best to mess things up, but ultimately, I think Silver and Teddy work it out. This looks like it could be a long-term relationship … though I am hearing something about a Dixon-Silver kiss in the near future.

Exclusive: 90210’s Zachary Ray Sherman Explains Jasper’s Perspective
2 05 2010At some point in life we all learn the lesson that things aren’t always as they appear. We’ve learned that this season with a few new characters on 90210, from Mark to Sasha to Teddy. But it’s Zachary Ray Sherman’s character, Jasper, that has perhaps elicited the strongest reaction along with the most confusion.
When we were first introduced to the character, he was grieving the loss of his uncle. From there we’ve seen him be mischievous (selling drugs to Adrianna), devious (pushing Navid down the stairs), talented (making his own movie), charming (praising Annie’s acting work) and suicidal (let’s just say the Hollywood sign isn’t meant for jumping off of). But who is the real Jasper? What does he really know about Annie? And what does he want from her?
With just 3 episodes left in the season, it seems there are still more questions than answers. In an exclusive interview, Sherman takes us inside Jasper’s mind (sharing a few spoilers along the way so consider this your warning!), explains just how that jump from the Hollywood sign was filmed and talks about his two upcoming movies.
TeenDramaWhore: When you first signed on to do 90210, you obviously knew who the character was and where you were starting out–what point A was. But did you know what point Z would be? Did you know where Jasper would end up?
Zachary Ray Sherman: No, I didn’t. I was provided with what the first episode entailed and I just worked from that. I would ask the writers here and there, and in the very first few weeks I would sit and talk with them and try to figure out what they would be able to let me know about what was coming up and where he was coming from. But it was sort of, in the grand scheme, unknown as to all the connections. We became aware as they wrote.
TDW: Did you watch any of the first season’s episodes to get acquainted with the show or the character of Annie [Shenae Grimes]?
Sherman: The only thing I pulled up prior to going to work was [because] Jasper cited Silver’s film project [Episode 1.17, Life’s A Drag]. So I knew I wanted to see that. So I pulled that up and I watched that. That was the only thing that I had seen. I hadn’t seen anything prior.
TDW: What attracted you to the role?
Sherman: Everything about it, I guess you could say. When I first read the character sketch, there was a lot of material right there within the sketch. There was seemingly substance to the part. That drew me to it. And it kept getting more interesting as we went. But, really, right from the beginning it was there. There’s turmoil going on with his uncle and he’s off kind of in his own space and world in relation to all the other kids at this school. I felt that would be pretty interesting to go in and tackle, somebody who’s outside of this whole “Beverly Hills 90210” high school world. That was pretty interesting. And it proved to be worthwhile and exciting to go through and discover.
TDW: I kept finding myself charmed by Jasper one minute and then uncomfortable the next. I really attribute that to the way you acted the part because the words on the page are there but through inflections and movements, you decided how things would be conveyed.
Sherman: I appreciate you saying that. What I wanted overall was a full picture, you know? It’s not just a one-sided agenda going on, where this character is a villain in the complete essence of just being that and functioning as that. However much as I was hearing that or people would say, you know, “This is what he’s here for” or “This is what he’s doing,” I wanted to try to fill it out as completely as I could and function in many different ways.
TDW: That relates directly to my next two questions. I do Weekly Polls on my site and a couple of weeks ago the question was “Is Jasper creepy or misunderstood?” They could choose one or the other, both or neither. Most people chose creepy and the second highest result was both.
Sherman: I would hope that it’s more uncertain as to just a simple definition of calling him creepy completely. Being misunderstood could mean many things. But I personally don’t approach the role as going for just being creepy, just being, you know, off his rocker. That’s relevant at times. I’m glad to hear people are uncertain as to what to think about the character because I think that’s a good reflection of life. There’s so many different ways to see things.
TDW: Right. And some people were, and I think still are, rooting for Jasper and Annie as a couple and Jasper as a person. I read a few comments from people who not only believe that Jasper can be redeemed, so to speak, but that a lot of what transpired in the recent episodes was Annie’s fault, that she kind of led him on.
Sherman: A lot of his motivation in the later half of the season, once he comes clean and admits that’s he’s a drug dealer and knowing what he knows about Annie’s connection to his uncle, it all seems to start [unraveling]. Brick walls come up from Annie in his direction and I think that’s hard for him to understand and take with their past relationship and history.
TDW: I have an unanswered question about the end of the 12th episode of the season. That was Winter Wonderland, where outside of the dance, Jasper reveals that he knows Annie killed or hit his uncle. I was wondering–because I don’t think they ever got into this–how he knows and did he know all along?
Sherman: I think that will become obvious to viewers in the coming episodes when Jasper reappears and comes back to school. That’s something I had been curious about throughout my work down there. That was a big challenge for me, coming primarily from working on film where you have a script from page one to 123. When you’re working on TV week-to-week, you’re only provided with those 50 pages and you’re well aware that things can be changed days before you work or even minutes before you work as to what the writers come up with and decide to change. I was at work one day and they entirely rewrote a scene while I was waiting to go in front of the cameras. That uncertainty as an actor is a heckuva lot different than when working on a film. To know all of the back information–maybe the writers haven’t written or let you become aware of it–is something you’re always [wondering.] It’s interesting and a challenge but exciting for the most part.
TDW: The last episode you appeared in thus far was when Jasper leaped from the H of the Hollywood sign and then he’s in the hospital and his parents tell Annie that he’s going to be under psychiatric care [Episode 2.17, Sweaty Palms and Weak Knees]. Did you know you’d be coming back later in the season?
Sherman: It was sort of up in the air. I had heard both that I would be coming back and then I heard that I wouldn’t be coming back. I think that sort of reflects what I was just saying, where the showrunner [Rebecca Sinclair] and the producers and the writers are constantly refining the story as it goes day-to-day. I was pleased to hear when it finally ended up coming back my way that Jasper was going to be coming back.
TDW: With that scene at the Hollywood sign, I was just wondering how that was filmed. How did you get up there, what was cushioning you when you fell, all that.
Sherman: Well, we shot it up on the peak that neighbors the actual Hollywood sign. I went up there when they were setting up other stuff and peered over at the actual sign. So we were very close to the actual Hollywood sign. But what they did is they built a façade of seven or six of the letters and we worked off of those. Through different character angles they achieved what they achieved with that scene. But there was one point I started on a 30 foot scaffolding up on the peak, and I was up there with a couple stunt guys who were keeping me safe and that was pretty thrilling and exciting. And then they brought me down after they got that big wide shot and put me on a mock-up, 12-foot top-half of the H and we ran the whole scene. I did my stunt from there and Krishna [Rao] directed. He’s the cinematographer who works throughout the whole season. We played on that scene for a good 45 minutes.
TDW: Wow.
Sherman: It was also interesting because when I first read that that’s how they were sending Jasper away, being up on the hill and on the H, that ties into the Peg Entwistle stuff that happened back when she went up there and jumped off. So that was something I couldn’t help but think about when we were doing it. [Ed. Note: Entwistle was an actress who, in 1932, killed herself by jumping off the H of the sign.]
TDW: We obviously haven’t seen the finale yet but spoilers are slowly leaking out. We know there’s something to do with Annie, Liam [Matt Lanter] and a burning boat–and it kind of relates to you. What can you tell us?
Sherman: Jasper comes back and, you know, re-situates himself in the high school, dealing with everybody knowing what he did. He finds Annie and talks with her. From there he just sort of–you know, you’ll just have to see!
TDW: Fair enough. Not sure if you can answer this but, I’m assuming there’s a few cliff-hangers in the finale and I’m wondering if we can look forward to more Jasper in season 3. I know a while back–and this was clearly just a rumor, as you said before you didn’t know if you’d even be returning this season–there was a rumor for a while about you becoming a regular or at least fans wanting you to become a regular on the show. Any idea?
Sherman: It’s all pretty much the same as before–up in the air. I guess you can kind of play the situation out and see that Jasper is clearly around as the finale concludes so I guess it just depends on where they begin with the new season and what they decide to do. But I don’t have any details as to whether he’ll be there for good or at all or anything.
TDW: Are you getting recognized on the street at all?
Sherman: It happens here and there. It’s happened at the bank the most.
TDW: Really?
Sherman: Yeah. Also some checkers at the grocery store will say something. I’ll be walking across the street and sometimes people will shout “Jasper!” One day I was walking across Sunset Boulevard and somebody shouted “Jasper!” and I just kept my eyes forward and continued on my way. And this guy in the car next to the people who had shouted said, “Man, I think these guys know you. They want to say hi.” That was kind of new for me.
TDW: As far as I’m aware, this is one of your first big recurring roles on a weekly series. What are some of the big take-aways or lessons that you’ve learned?
Sherman: Well, it’s been a great exercise in acting, simply having to study the material to work through each week. One thing that I was quite pleased with is the way television works is you have a new director every single week. It’s sort of like strapping on new shoes each week. It keeps it fresh. You get a new set of eyes with a different person helming the episode. So the dialogue’s different, the style is different. It was cool to always have that role of director constantly changing. That was one of my favorite things about it.
TDW: I don’t know if you’re working on it right now or if you were working on it, but tell me about the movie Killer By Nature.
Sherman: That’s wrapped and it should be out, boy I don’t know, maybe within the next six months. That’s a feature film where I play a high school student–I guess he’s a senior–named Owen who has constantly had nightmares throughout his life. But when the film begins, the frequency of these nightmares have really revved up. Some of the things he’s been dreaming about, having nightmares about, begin occurring in reality, kind of around him. So it’s sort of a psychological thriller that I hope people respond to and keeps them interested. It was a good experience. It stars Ron Perlman and Armand Assante. I had a good time working on it.
TDW: That’s great. When it has a release date, I’ll let my readers know.
Sherman: Oh, great. There’s also a picture called My Suicide that will see a theatrical release in September. The guys behind that are real excited. They’ve been working really hard. I think that’s definitely a project for the audience of 90210 to look out for and hopefully be interested in. It focuses on high school kids and comes out in September, which I think is Suicide Prevention Month. They all worked really hard and achieved quite a little film that’s got awards all over the world and has been playing the festivals for a year. Hopefully people respond to that as well. I have a small but important part in there.
TDW: I look forward to seeing it. One last question. I keep track of real and fake Twitter accounts for teen drama actors and I’ve found at least one fake account for you. Can you just say for the record whether you’re on Twitter?
Sherman: There’s a fellow on there that has my name but that’s not me. I don’t have a Twitter so hopefully that clears it up.
Come back next Sunday for another exclusive interview!

Spoiler: Ask The Addict
27 04 2010RELEVANT QUESTIONS–DON’T READ IF YOU DON’T WANT TO KNOW!!!
Any scoop on what 90210 has planned for their season finale? — Amber
The TV Addict: Would it surprise you to learn an nod to iconic original series star Emily Valentine? No really. Whether it be by happy accident or not, 90210’s May 18 season finale will go out with a bang when things really start to heat up on Liam’s boat after a certain somebody who-shall-not-be-named discovers that Annie and Liam are a little too dedicated to practicing “safe boating” in the form of mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.
Will Chuck and Blair end the season on a happily ever after? I’m worried for them. — Stacey
The TV Addict: We’re not so worried about Blair — who will have until the credits role on GOSSIP GIRL’s May 17 season finale to decide whether or not to meet Chuck at the top of the Empire State Building — as much as we’re worried for all of Manhattan. For as it turns out, April showers brings May shockers… in the form of Georgina Sparks (Michelle Trachtenberg) who returns to Manhattan… with a vengeance.

News Roundup: 90210, One Tree Hill and The O.C.
25 04 2010- SoapNet has two new promos/videos: the first includes Beverly Hills 90210, One Tree Hill and The O.C. along with the daytime soaps and is set to Sugarland’s It Happens, and the second explicitly features the teen dramas and is set to Outside My Window by Sarah Buxton. They seem to be airing shortened, edited versions but the full videos (which is what I linked to) are available online. I really like them.
- SoapNet has a One Tree Hill poll asking, “Which Tree Hill character do you miss in the new seasons?” The options are Tim, Bevin and Jake.
- Star News has a quiz about One Tree Hill. It’s pretty hard unless you are an absolutely DIE-HARD fan and/or a Wilmington resident.
- TVGuide.com has an interview with James Lafferty (Nathan, One Tree Hill). Have you read my interview with him yet?
- Star News and CosmoGirl! have interviews with Shantel VanSanten (Quinn, One Tree Hill).
- SoapNet has a poll for The O.C., asking “Who was better for Ryan?” The options are Marissa and Taylor.

Exclusive: James Lafferty on the Past, Present and Future of One Tree Hill
25 04 2010In 2003, television viewers met Nathan Scott, a cute but cocky, athletic but academically-challenged high school junior. In the nearly seven real-time years that have passed, we’ve slowly seen Nathan transform into a handsome but humble, career-minded but family-focused husband and father.
Who will Nathan be in another year? James Lafferty, who spoke with me earlier this week about the past, present and future of One Tree Hill, hopes we’ll be able to find out. But before we could get to that, Lafferty turned the tables on me. See for yourself…
James Lafferty: So you’re TeenDramaWhore.com.
TeenDramaWhore: What do you think of the name?
Lafferty: That’s such an admission of guilt! It’s good, though. It’s straight to the point so people know what they’re getting.
TDW: That’s right. I admit I am obsessed with teen dramas and I wanted to create a place for fans just like me to discuss the shows.
Lafferty: Is that going well for you?
TDW: It’s going great. I love it. And I love getting to interview people like you!
Lafferty: Awesome. So where do we rank on your teen drama list?
TDW: Oh, goodness. That’s such a hard question!
Lafferty: I get to ask you one hard question and you get to ask me 20 easy ones.
TDW: Okay. I’ll take that deal. I would say you guys are in a three-way tie for number one.
Lafferty: Alright.
TDW: My all-time favorite is the original 90210. But tied with it would be Dawson’s Creek and One Tree Hill.
Lafferty: So we’re in a three-way tie with 90210 and Dawson’s Creek?
TDW: Yes.
Lafferty: Oh, c’mon! You can’t ask for anything more than that. That’s the hall of fame right there!
TDW: That is the hall of fame. So, of the current shows on right now, that means you win.
Lafferty: That does mean we win. Okay, I’m happy with that.
TDW: Great! My turn! There are just four episodes left in One Tree Hill’s seventh season. How would you describe them?
Lafferty: You know, I have only seen the finale. But I think all the episodes are going to come together really well. We had sort of an all-star lineup of directors for the last few. Pete Kowalski directed one. He’s been our director of photography for so long and has directed episodes before. He’s phenomenal. [Executive producer] Greg Prange directed one and he’s just a veteran. He knows the show so well. As a director, the only person who knows the show better is probably [creator] Mark Schwahn. And Schwahn directed the finale. So we’ve got a lot of really strong episodes coming up for the audience to look forward to.
TDW: Greg worked on Dawson’s Creek before One Tree Hill.
Lafferty: Yes, he did. It’s funny–Dawson’s Creek was actually shooting their finale when we shot our pilot back in 2003. Greg was still working on Dawson’s at the time and was not involved in our show. But once [The WB] picked us up and we were coming to Wilmington, it seemed like a great fit to have Greg Prange and [producer] David Hartley come on and sort of help guide us here in Wilmington.
TDW: That’s awesome. I really love how these two fantastic teen dramas have come out of that one area, with the same soundstages and everything.
Lafferty: I think it’s a testament to the area, to Wilmington. It inspires and encourages this really great, classic, sort of American setting. I think that’s why so many productions come here.
TDW: That’s right. So one thing in the promos for the upcoming episodes that has everyone talking is that Haley [Bethany Joy Galeotti] doesn’t seem like she’s doing too well. Do you have anything comforting you can say to the fans about that?
Lafferty: Yeah, absolutely. Haley is obviously grieving because she’s lost her mom but these things, it’s like “what doesn’t kill us, makes us stronger.” I think Haley’s journey through this process is going to bring the Scott family unit together and also her friends are going to have to be there for her. So what that means from an audience standpoint is you’re going to see the whole group sort of banding together to make it through this and it’s going to be a really positive experience.
TDW: What is it about Naley, do you think, that has earned the couple such loyal fans?
Lafferty: I think, to start with, the likelihood of the situation, of Nathan and Haley coming together, was so small. In our first few episodes, the characters were worlds apart. It didn’t seem like it would be a good fit. But sort of against all odds, they continued to make it work over the years and they fought through adversity. I think they’ve become a couple that you don’t take for granted because they’ve been up against so much. So you root for them.
TDW: People are rooting for them. I think they root for Jamie [Jackson Brundage], too. One thing that has stuck out to me is that a lot of people have said this season how quickly Jackson is growing up before our very eyes. And it got me thinking that you kind of grew up on the screen before us, too. Weren’t you just 17 when you were cast in the show?
Lafferty: Yeah. I hadn’t turned 18 yet. I did my senior year of high school during the pilot. I was out here [in Wilmington] with my mom for three weeks shooting the pilot.. And then the next time I was here was when the show got picked up and we were shooting the first episode. I was 18 and I was out here on my own in an apartment. I lived with Brett Claywell, who played Tim on the show. I always say that One Tree Hill has kind of been my college. I guess now that means I am working on my master’s degree or maybe my Ph.D.
TDW: Maybe. Seven years is a long time.
Lafferty: It is a long time. And I’ve been thankful for every year. I’d be grateful for another one.
TDW: Next week, I believe, is the show’s 150th episode.
Lafferty: Oh, that’s right. Greg Prange, fittingly, directed our 150th episode. We had a little impromptu celebration on set when we wrapped that episode.
TDW: Did you? That’s great.
Lafferty: Yeah. It’s such a good milestone. For me, it’s just as big as 100. Not a lot of shows go for 150 episodes. The fact that we have seven complete seasons–we never had a season that just went for 13; we’ve had seven very complete seasons–it kind of blows my mind to think about it.
TDW: When you look back on the all the stories you’ve done in 150 episodes, what stands out to you? Do you have a favorite storyline or episode?
Lafferty: I’ve got a couple. There’s just like these “moments.” When we shot the state championship episode [Episode 4.09, Some You Give Away], that was huge. We went to Raleigh and we shot in N.C. State’s arena. I think it’s called the RBC Center. Greg Prange directed that episode. We were up against it. We had not a lot of time to shoot it. We had to be out of that RBC Center by a certain time. We just had a mountain of set-ups to shoot for all the basketball action. It was really a testament to the work this crew can do. Brendan Kirsch, who does all the sports coordination, pulled everything together and we really made those two days happen. We got an amazing episode out of it, amazing basketball action. And that was so gratifying for me, because I was so connected to the basketball part of it. Then another one is sort of a basketball one as well, when Nathan took the court at the Bobcats arena [Episode 6.24, Remember Me As A Time Of Day] for the NBA. We went to Charlotte to shoot that and we actually went and shot half-time at a game. They said, “You have four minutes to get what you need.”
TDW: Oh, wow.
Lafferty: Literally, in four minutes, we ran out there, took a steady cam out there and we had all of our guys dressed in Bobcats clothing. There were 26,000 fans in the arena. The announcer came on and announced Nathan Scott. All the graphics were up all over the screens. It was just this surreal moment when I literally felt like I had won the lottery. That just doesn’t happen. For me, it’s always been a dream to take the court at an NBA game and even though it didn’t “really” happen, just even shooting that and being in front of that many people, having that moment happen for the character, was just really awesome. So those are just a couple of moments that stand out for me as really defining times.
TDW: Speaking of the basketball, this season, we haven’t really seen you play outside of the River Court. If we get a season 8, will Nathan get back to that?
Lafferty: I don’t know. Possibly. It’s difficult to say where Nathan in particular is headed in his career. He could continue playing for the NBA. He could realize he really cherishes his time and loves his time being a father and a husband and wants to be close to his family. I think Nathan will always be involved in basketball. Basketball will always be a part of his life. But in what way has yet to be defined.
TDW: I know you’ve been back a few weeks already but you guys went to Utah to film the finale. I imagine it took you out of your comfort zone a little bit because it’s not the Wilmington weather and it’s certainly not the California weather.
Lafferty: We were definitely out of our element. It was funny–we actually had one of the coldest winters ever here in Wilmington this past winter. It had just started getting warm here and we decided to go to Utah. I called it “chasing winter.” We basically chased the winter to Utah and got back into that really cold environment. We had this hybrid crew of local Utah people and the people from Wilmington we brought out. That worked really well. There were a lot of things we were up against that could’ve hurt us or held us back a little bit but we got through it and we got everything done, got everything we needed. Mark Schwahn got us to do some really good days. It was a great experience.
TDW: What have you heard about a season 8?
Lafferty: I’ve tried not to pay too much attention to it because there’s so much speculation. There’s hundreds of questions and no answers. It’s really hard. If you listen to everything that’s out there, and if you really invest in everything that’s said, it can be emotionally taxing. We’re talking about our lives here. I think for me, I’m trying to sit back and just wait. I’ve heard a couple of different things here and there but for me, it still seems to be a coin toss. I think the fan support really does help. So if you’re a fan of the show, continue to voice your support.
TDW: If this is the last season of the show, what would you want the show’s legacy to be?
Lafferty: Well, I think the show’s legacy is already defined. I think the way that you put it at the beginning of this interview, of you ranking us up there with 90210 and Dawson’s Creek, that’s really our show’s legacy. I think we’re going to go down as one of those great teen dramas that hopefully a generation identified with. That’s really what I hope for. That people look back on the show and say “That was a sign of the times.”
TDW: What message would you want to give to the fans?
Lafferty: I’m a sucker for happy endings. I would like to leave the fans with a happy ending. I think we go to the movies, we watch our TVs so we can be told stories and I would love for our story to be one that ends positively.
Come back tomorrow night at 8pm eastern for my live-blog of One Tree Hill 7.19, Every Picture Tells A Story.
