Weekly Poll

19 05 2010

In the last Weekly Poll, 46 percent were intrigued by a Alex-Chase pairing on One Tree Hill. Almost equal amounts–28 percent and 26 percent–didn’t want it or were mixed, respectively. There were similarly close results in the Gossip Girl poll, where 49 percent want to see Dan and Serena reunite and 41 percent don’t want to. Another 10 percent were mixed. A whopping 72 percent weren’t digging the Javianna storyline on 90210, believing Navid would be much better. Just 9 percent thought Javier was a good fit and 19 percent doesn’t want Adrianna with Javier OR Navid.

I most likely won’t be doing a Weekly Poll during the summer hiatus.

Stay tuned for individual show surveys to evaluate the season and then a survey pitting each show’s results head-to-head.

You can check out last  year’s evaluation in the meantime.

News Roundup: One Tree Hill, 90210, Gossip Girl and More

14 05 2010
  • Media Life has an interesting article on state of The CW, its success in the past year (including why Gossip Girl and 90210 are considered successful when their total live audience numbers suggest otherwise) and how it might approach the 2010-2011 season. The article also says there is speculation both One Tree Hill and Life Unexpected will return, which is the same speculation we heard yesterday. And let me put emphasis on the word “speculation.”
  • Kristin also reports that OTH and LUX could get a 12 or 13 episode order but cautions “no final decisions have been made.”
  • Gossip Cop and I busted a Hollywood Life story claiming Torrey DeVitto (Carrie, One Tree Hill) and Paul Wesley (Donnie, The O.C.) “got secretly married.” They haven’t.
  • Generation Y, featuring Daniella Alonso (Anna, One Tree Hill), has been ordered as a series by ABC.
  • NBC ordered three series with teen drama connections: Friends With Benefits, starring Danneel Harris (Rachel, One Tree Hill), Outlaw, previously called Justice and created by John Eisendrath (executive producer, Beverly Hills 90210), and Harry’s Law, previously called Kindreds and featuring Brittany Snow (Young Lily, Gossip Girl).
  • Luke Perry (Dylan, Beverly Hills 90210) worked with Soles4Souls today to aid those affected in Nashville by the floods.
  • Jessica Stroup (Silver, 90210) received the Sparkling Performance Award at last night’s Young Hollywood Awards, which were also attended by Jennie Garth (Kelly, Beverly Hills 90210), Snow, Wesley and Nikki Reed (Sadie, The O.C.) and possibly other teen drama stars.
  • Stroup has a new pixie haircut and spoke to PEOPLE.com about it.
  • Gossip Cop busted rumors that Ed Westwick (Chuck, Gossip Girl) and Jessica Szohr (Vanessa, Gossip Girl) are back together. They are NOT…but anything is possible down the road.
  • NBC canceled Mercy, which starred Michelle Trachtenberg (Georgina, Gossip Girl) and James Van Der Beek (Dawson, Dawson’s Creek).
  • PEOPLE.com reports Michelle Williams (Jen, Dawson’s Creek) is in “active negotiations” to play Marilyn Monroe in a movie.
  • If you were a fan of The WB–and I imagine you were if you’re a Dawson’s Creek and One Tree Hill fan–I highly encourage you to check out this roundup of promos from the network, featuring those casts and many other teen drama stars. It’s a chillingly beautiful trip down memory lane.

News Roundup: Gossip Girl, 90210, One Tree Hill and More

13 05 2010
  • Ad Age has an interesting article on how Gossip Girl actually is successful, but the Nielsen ratings don’t show it. It is based on a study by Optimedia, which created “Content Power Ratings.” The Nielsens rank Gossip Girl as the 125th most popular show but Optmedia argues it should be 14th based on all the ways it engages an audience (as opposed to just through watching TV).
  • Chuck, executive produced by Josh Schwartz (executive producer, Gossip Girl; The O.C.) was renewed by NBC.
  • Beverly Hills 90210 will start from the beginning on SoapNet tomorrow. With the recent scheduling changes, the episodes will air at 11am and noon and then repeat at 4 and 5pm.
  • The new issue of Us Weekly has an interview with Tori Spelling (Donna, Beverly Hills 90210) and hubby Dean McDermott on their vow renewal, plus lots of pictures, including one of Tori with brother Randy Spelling (Ryan, Beverly Hills 90210) and mother Candy Spelling (wife of Aaron, executive producer, Beverly Hills 90210).
  • The New York Times has an interview with Kellan Lutz (George, 90210) about his work with Calvin Klein.
  • Ausiello says “The CW is said to be strongly considering renewing both One Tree Hill and Life Unexpected for 12 episodes apiece.” But he has a very important disclaimer at the top: “The below info is purely speculative and should by no means be taken as gospel.”
  • There’s a feature on Jana Kramer (Alex, One Tree Hill) in the June issue of Maxim. Warning: NSFW!
  • TodayOnline.com has an interview with Joshua Jackson (Pacey, Dawson’s Creek) and some others, mostly about Fringe.
  • Carolyn Hennesy (Mrs. Valentine, Dawson’s Creek) received a Daytime Emmy nomination for her work on Days Of Our Lives General Hospital.

RELEVANT QUESTIONS–DON’T READ IF YOU DON’T WANT TO KNOW!!!

Quincy in New York: I’m devastated at the rumor that ***** and ***** will hook up on Gossip Girl! Please say it isn’t so!
It so…is. Sorry. Sources confirm that a certain someone will be doing a certain something for the first time and it will cause some serious heartbreak—for you fans and another girl on the show. And that might not be the only hookup shocker! I’m told that “A Gossip Girl blast goes out about Dan and Serena that will not make Vanessa or Nate happy.” Suffice to say, the finale is going to have lots of romantic upheaval, so buckle up. Oh, and the good news? I’m hearing that at least one core G.G. couple will end up happy at the end of the season. Say your prayers for your fave now!

Katelyn in Oahu: 90210 details are seriously needed.
Liam finally sets sail in his boat, but sadly, it’s almost instantly destroyed in a firey death—with him and Annie on board! And remember that crazy-horrible-mind-blowing thing we’ve teased happens to Naomi? It’s right around the corner and involves an action that’s both physical and devastating.

RELEVANT QUESTIONS–DON’T READ IF YOU DON’T WANT TO KNOW!!!

Any scoop on what 90210 has planned for their season finale? — Amber
The TV Addict: Would it surprise you to learn an nod to iconic original series star Emily Valentine? No really. Whether it be by happy accident or not, 90210’s May 18 season finale will go out with a bang when things really start to heat up on Liam’s boat after a certain somebody who-shall-not-be-named discovers that Annie and Liam are a little too dedicated to practicing “safe boating” in the form of mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.

Will Chuck and Blair end the season on a happily ever after? I’m worried for them. — Stacey
The TV Addict: We’re not so worried about Blair — who will have until the credits role on GOSSIP GIRL’s May 17 season finale to decide whether or not to meet Chuck at the top of the Empire State Building — as much as we’re worried for all of Manhattan. For as it turns out, April showers brings May shockers… in the form of Georgina Sparks (Michelle Trachtenberg) who returns to Manhattan… with a vengeance.

RELEVANT QUESTIONS–DON’T READ IF YOU DON’T WANT TO KNOW!!!

Forget about Chuck and Blair! The real craziness that’s going down toward the end of this season of Gossip Girl is all about who’s saying goodbye.

On the heels of the news that Taylor Momsen‘s Jenny Humphrey will be leaving the Upper East Side this season, I’m told now that yet another female regular will be heading off into the sunset. (And leaving one heartbroken boy behind.)

So who is it?

Marcio in Ipswich, Mass.: Could we get some news on One Tree Hill or Melrose Place? Will they both stick around?
Nope. I’m told Melrose Place is pretty much a goner. It would take a miracle for it to survive at this point. However, the jury’s still out on One Tree Hill. The ratings in the next few weeks do matter, and it returns with a new episode tonight. (Hint, hint.)

Bob in Oakland, Calif.: Are we gonna see my girl Kristen Bell again on Party Down?
Yes! Adam Scott spilled the scoop: “When the season starts, Uda (Kristen Bell) is my steady girlfriend. But then Casey (Lizzy Caplan) comes back into the fold and kind of screws everything up.” Thus freeing Kristen to reteam with creator and executive producer Rob Thomas for a Veronica Mars movie, right? We kid. But don’t give up hope yet: “I’d love to do one,” said Rob at the Party Down Paley Center for Media celebration for the show’s second season premiere. “Kristen would love to do one…We [just] need someone to pay for it!” Empty your piggy-banks, kids!

Marlo in London: What’s the scoop on Vanessa and Dan on Gossip Girl?
It’s not looking good long-term, sorry! I’m hearing that Vanessa will be leaving not only New York but the country before the end of the season–running off to a superfancy and superfar job with CNN. So yes, Jessica is the second female, along with Taylor Momsen’s Little J, to head off into the sunset. The good news? I’m told by sources that both ladies will still be series regulars next season. As for you wondering what Little J will do that leads to her departure, I’m told “it’s a culmination of lots of things Jenny does to multiple people.” That doesn’t sound good at all!

Matthew in Philadelphia: What’s the word on Gossip Girl?
Don’t expect Serena to continue to sit idly by while Jenny tries to hone in on Nate. The onetime pals and now stepsisters are headed for some seriously rough times ahead.

Jenelle from Conn.: Yay! One Tree Hill is back tonight! The death of Haley’s mom made for such a great episode! What happens after?
Well, when we talked to James Lafferty, he had this to say: “Haley has a long road ahead of her in dealing with her mother’s death, as anybody would. A big part of the Scott family life will be dealing with the grief. It’s definitely a growing experience for the family.” Another tease? Here’s the deal with Nathan for the rest of the season: “He’s finally got some time to spend with his family, and his family at this point in their lives really needs him,” James tells us. “He really gets the opportunity to be a father and a husband.” Model husband and father? Adorable.

Evelyn in Tacoma, Wash.: 90210 is really getting good, but how are things going to go down between Debbie and Harry if Rob Estes is leaving?
Believe it or not, Annie’s going to be the one to point out the marriage woes between her parents, causing them to really sit down and talk things over. But when Debbie finds out that Harry has pretty much enabled Dixon’s little gambling problems, something (one would find in a diaper) is going to hit the fan.

Notes:

I can’t see why the ratings at this point would have much of an impact on whether One Tree Hill is renewed. To date, One Tree Hill has outperformed both Gossip Girl and 90210, which received early renewals. Even if One Tree Hill dropped during these next four episodes, Gossip Girl and 90210 have dropped significantly in the last few months. OTH wouldn’t be the only show underperforming. Clearly ratings aren’t the biggest factor to The CW. That said I realize there’s more value in GG/90210 at low ratings than there is with OTH at low ratings. If I had to guess–and I’ll do it with a disclaimer that I’m far less experienced than Kristin–I’d say that while decent ratings are preferred, OTH’s renewal will really be based on how The CW’s pilots turn out and whether the network would rather risk starting a new series or risk sticking with an aging one.

Kristen Bell voices Gossip Girl on, um, Gossip Girl.
