Exclusive: James Lafferty on the Past, Present and Future of One Tree Hill
25 04 2010In 2003, television viewers met Nathan Scott, a cute but cocky, athletic but academically-challenged high school junior. In the nearly seven real-time years that have passed, we’ve slowly seen Nathan transform into a handsome but humble, career-minded but family-focused husband and father.
Who will Nathan be in another year? James Lafferty, who spoke with me earlier this week about the past, present and future of One Tree Hill, hopes we’ll be able to find out. But before we could get to that, Lafferty turned the tables on me. See for yourself…
James Lafferty: So youâre TeenDramaWhore.com.
TeenDramaWhore: What do you think of the name?
Lafferty: Thatâs such an admission of guilt! Itâs good, though. Itâs straight to the point so people know what theyâre getting.
TDW: Thatâs right. I admit I am obsessed with teen dramas and I wanted to create a place for fans just like me to discuss the shows.
Lafferty: Is that going well for you?
TDW: Itâs going great. I love it. And I love getting to interview people like you!
Lafferty: Awesome. So where do we rank on your teen drama list?
TDW: Oh, goodness. Thatâs such a hard question!
Lafferty: I get to ask you one hard question and you get to ask me 20 easy ones.
TDW: Okay. Iâll take that deal. I would say you guys are in a three-way tie for number one.
Lafferty: Alright.
TDW: My all-time favorite is the original 90210. But tied with it would be Dawsonâs Creek and One Tree Hill.
Lafferty: So weâre in a three-way tie with 90210 and Dawsonâs Creek?
TDW: Yes.
Lafferty: Oh, câmon! You canât ask for anything more than that. Thatâs the hall of fame right there!
TDW: That is the hall of fame. So, of the current shows on right now, that means you win.
Lafferty: That does mean we win. Okay, Iâm happy with that.
TDW: Great! My turn! There are just four episodes left in One Tree Hillâs seventh season. How would you describe them?
Lafferty: You know, I have only seen the finale. But I think all the episodes are going to come together really well. We had sort of an all-star lineup of directors for the last few. Pete Kowalski directed one. Heâs been our director of photography for so long and has directed episodes before. Heâs phenomenal. [Executive producer] Greg Prange directed one and heâs just a veteran. He knows the show so well. As a director, the only person who knows the show better is probably [creator] Mark Schwahn. And Schwahn directed the finale. So weâve got a lot of really strong episodes coming up for the audience to look forward to.
TDW: Greg worked on Dawsonâs Creek before One Tree Hill.
Lafferty: Yes, he did. Itâs funny–Dawsonâs Creek was actually shooting their finale when we shot our pilot back in 2003. Greg was still working on Dawsonâs at the time and was not involved in our show. But once [The WB] picked us up and we were coming to Wilmington, it seemed like a great fit to have Greg Prange and [producer] David Hartley come on and sort of help guide us here in Wilmington.
TDW: Thatâs awesome. I really love how these two fantastic teen dramas have come out of that one area, with the same soundstages and everything.
Lafferty: I think itâs a testament to the area, to Wilmington. It inspires and encourages this really great, classic, sort of American setting. I think thatâs why so many productions come here.
TDW: Thatâs right. So one thing in the promos for the upcoming episodes that has everyone talking is that Haley [Bethany Joy Galeotti] doesnât seem like sheâs doing too well. Do you have anything comforting you can say to the fans about that?
Lafferty: Yeah, absolutely. Haley is obviously grieving because sheâs lost her mom but these things, itâs like âwhat doesnât kill us, makes us stronger.â I think Haleyâs journey through this process is going to bring the Scott family unit together and also her friends are going to have to be there for her. So what that means from an audience standpoint is youâre going to see the whole group sort of banding together to make it through this and itâs going to be a really positive experience.
TDW: What is it about Naley, do you think, that has earned the couple such loyal fans?
Lafferty: I think, to start with, the likelihood of the situation, of Nathan and Haley coming together, was so small. In our first few episodes, the characters were worlds apart. It didnât seem like it would be a good fit. But sort of against all odds, they continued to make it work over the years and they fought through adversity. I think theyâve become a couple that you donât take for granted because theyâve been up against so much. So you root for them.
TDW: People are rooting for them. I think they root for Jamie [Jackson Brundage], too. One thing that has stuck out to me is that a lot of people have said this season how quickly Jackson is growing up before our very eyes. And it got me thinking that you kind of grew up on the screen before us, too. Werenât you just 17 when you were cast in the show?
Lafferty: Yeah. I hadnât turned 18 yet. I did my senior year of high school during the pilot. I was out here [in Wilmington] with my mom for three weeks shooting the pilot.. And then the next time I was here was when the show got picked up and we were shooting the first episode. I was 18 and I was out here on my own in an apartment. I lived with Brett Claywell, who played Tim on the show. I always say that One Tree Hill has kind of been my college. I guess now that means I am working on my masterâs degree or maybe my Ph.D.
TDW: Maybe. Seven years is a long time.
Lafferty: It is a long time. And Iâve been thankful for every year. Iâd be grateful for another one.
TDW: Next week, I believe, is the showâs 150th episode.
Lafferty: Oh, thatâs right. Greg Prange, fittingly, directed our 150th episode. We had a little impromptu celebration on set when we wrapped that episode.
TDW: Did you? Thatâs great.
Lafferty: Yeah. Itâs such a good milestone. For me, itâs just as big as 100. Not a lot of shows go for 150 episodes. The fact that we have seven complete seasons–we never had a season that just went for 13; weâve had seven very complete seasons–it kind of blows my mind to think about it.
TDW: When you look back on the all the stories youâve done in 150 episodes, what stands out to you? Do you have a favorite storyline or episode?
Lafferty: Iâve got a couple. Thereâs just like these âmoments.â When we shot the state championship episode [Episode 4.09, Some You Give Away], that was huge. We went to Raleigh and we shot in N.C. Stateâs arena. I think itâs called the RBC Center. Greg Prange directed that episode. We were up against it. We had not a lot of time to shoot it. We had to be out of that RBC Center by a certain time. We just had a mountain of set-ups to shoot for all the basketball action. It was really a testament to the work this crew can do. Brendan Kirsch, who does all the sports coordination, pulled everything together and we really made those two days happen. We got an amazing episode out of it, amazing basketball action. And that was so gratifying for me, because I was so connected to the basketball part of it. Then another one is sort of a basketball one as well, when Nathan took the court at the Bobcats arena [Episode 6.24, Remember Me As A Time Of Day] for the NBA. We went to Charlotte to shoot that and we actually went and shot half-time at a game. They said, âYou have four minutes to get what you need.â
TDW: Oh, wow.
Lafferty: Literally, in four minutes, we ran out there, took a steady cam out there and we had all of our guys dressed in Bobcats clothing. There were 26,000 fans in the arena. The announcer came on and announced Nathan Scott. All the graphics were up all over the screens. It was just this surreal moment when I literally felt like I had won the lottery. That just doesnât happen. For me, itâs always been a dream to take the court at an NBA game and even though it didnât âreallyâ happen, just even shooting that and being in front of that many people, having that moment happen for the character, was just really awesome. So those are just a couple of moments that stand out for me as really defining times.
TDW: Speaking of the basketball, this season, we havenât really seen you play outside of the River Court. If we get a season 8, will Nathan get back to that?
Lafferty: I donât know. Possibly. Itâs difficult to say where Nathan in particular is headed in his career. He could continue playing for the NBA. He could realize he really cherishes his time and loves his time being a father and a husband and wants to be close to his family. I think Nathan will always be involved in basketball. Basketball will always be a part of his life. But in what way has yet to be defined.
TDW: I know youâve been back a few weeks already but you guys went to Utah to film the finale. I imagine it took you out of your comfort zone a little bit because itâs not the Wilmington weather and itâs certainly not the California weather.
Lafferty: We were definitely out of our element. It was funny–we actually had one of the coldest winters ever here in Wilmington this past winter. It had just started getting warm here and we decided to go to Utah. I called it âchasing winter.â We basically chased the winter to Utah and got back into that really cold environment. We had this hybrid crew of local Utah people and the people from Wilmington we brought out. That worked really well. There were a lot of things we were up against that couldâve hurt us or held us back a little bit but we got through it and we got everything done, got everything we needed. Mark Schwahn got us to do some really good days. It was a great experience.
TDW: What have you heard about a season 8?
Lafferty: Iâve tried not to pay too much attention to it because thereâs so much speculation. Thereâs hundreds of questions and no answers. Itâs really hard. If you listen to everything thatâs out there, and if you really invest in everything thatâs said, it can be emotionally taxing. Weâre talking about our lives here. I think for me, Iâm trying to sit back and just wait. Iâve heard a couple of different things here and there but for me, it still seems to be a coin toss. I think the fan support really does help. So if youâre a fan of the show, continue to voice your support.
TDW: If this is the last season of the show, what would you want the showâs legacy to be?
Lafferty: Well, I think the showâs legacy is already defined. I think the way that you put it at the beginning of this interview, of you ranking us up there with 90210 and Dawsonâs Creek, thatâs really our showâs legacy. I think weâre going to go down as one of those great teen dramas that hopefully a generation identified with. Thatâs really what I hope for. That people look back on the show and say âThat was a sign of the times.â
TDW: What message would you want to give to the fans?
Lafferty: Iâm a sucker for happy endings. I would like to leave the fans with a happy ending. I think we go to the movies, we watch our TVs so we can be told stories and I would love for our story to be one that ends positively.
Come back tomorrow night at 8pm eastern for my live-blog of One Tree Hill 7.19, Every Picture Tells A Story.
Be sure to also come back next Sunday for another exclusive interview.

News Roundup: One Tree Hill, Gossip Girl, 90210 and More
21 04 2010- The CW sent out a press release of upcoming sweeps highlights, which Zap2it handily categorized by show. They left some things out, but all of it should be considered spoilers so consider this fair warning. If you guys want, I’ll post it all, as given in the release, in a Spoiler post. Let me know.
- There is “We Are One” campaign to further encourage The CW to renew One Tree Hill.
- Examiner.com has an article on the showcase Jana Kramer (Alex, One Tree Hill) had last week.
- I’ve heard speculation for a while now that Hilarie Burton (Peyton, One Tree Hill) has been dating actor Jeffrey Dean Morgan. With no legitimate outlet reporting it, I didn’t post anything on it. But now we’ve got confirmation: the duo appeared on the red carpet last night for his movie The Losers.
- Kenzie Dalton, girlfriend of Chad Michael Murray (Lucas, One Tree Hill), wrote on her blog that CMM has a graphic novel titled Everlast coming out this summer.
- How To Make It In America, starring Bryan Greenberg (Jake, One Tree Hill), has been renewed for a second season on HBO.
- Bob Levy (executive producer, Gossip Girl) has been named executive vice president of film at Alloy.
- ABC is reportedly developing a daytime talk show for Tori Spelling (Donna, Beverly Hills 90210) and a “co-host to be determined.”
- Eric Mabius (Dean Hess, The O.C.) has been cast in Outcasts, a BBC series.
- Jeffrey Stepakoff (writer-producer, Dawson’s Creek) is returning to Wilmington April 30 for a book signing to support Fireworks Over Toccoa. Have you read my interview with him?

20 04 2010RELEVANT QUESTIONSâDONâT READ IF YOU DONâT WANT TO KNOW!!!
Mike in Alexandria, Va.: I’m dying for news on One Tree Hill! Please tell us, will it survive? Or will the CW pick up Life Unexpected instead?
Still no decisions yet, but they both could come backâpossibly with shortened seasons, so keep the faith! We’ll find out May 20. As for OTH, I’ll be (hopefully) talking to James Lafferty and/or Rob Buckley this week, so please email me any Q’s you have or send them via twitter @kristinalert.
Erica in Turkey: We need some Chuck and Blair scoop that is good please on Gossip Girl!
I’m so sad to have to say this, but I don’t have anything new to report on the Chair front. I’m trying to keep the faith with you, and I know they will reunite at some point, but it might not be superquick, sorry.
Elise from Austin, Texas: I just can’t get on board with Gia and Adrianna on 90210. I miss her and Navid being together. Any hope?
Well, I’d say yes, after sitting down with Michael Steger to talk about the rest of the season. He says Navid and Adrianna (Jessica Lowndes) “develop a strong friendship again.” That’s good news, yes? I can also tell you that their bond gets stronger because of some changes in her music career. And what of Navid’s new girl Lila (Amber Wallace)? “We take it to another level, but it’s a temporary thing,” Michael dishes. So hope is lost for all you Adrianna/Navid fans!
Rebecca in Oregon: Any hope for Naomi and Liam?
I’m told she’ll be single for a while. Sorry.

Notes:
Life Unexpected stars Kerr Smith (Jack, Dawson’s Creek).
I think there’s a typo in this sentence: “So hope is lost for all you Adrianna/Navid fans!” Based on the sentences before it, it probably should read “So no hope is lost for all you Adrianna/Navid fans!” Or, alternatively, “All hope is not lost for all you Adrianna/Navid fans!”

News Roundup: Gossip Girl, 90210, One Tree Hill and Dawson’s Creek
13 04 2010- Last night’s Gossip Girl (1.9 million viewers rounded up) climbed a bit in the ratings compared to last week.
- Korbi is asking via poll if Blair should have forgiven Chuck.
- Gossip Cop busted a Perez Hilton/In Touch story about Leighton Meester (Blair, Gossip Girl) hooking up with Twilight’s Robert Pattinson.
- The Daily News claims they have more details about the breakup between Ed Westwick (Chuck, Gossip Girl) and Jessica Szohr (Vanessa, Gossip Girl).

- Brian Austin Green (David, Beverly Hills 90210) will make his return to Smallville on Friday’s episode. Ausiello has an exclusive sneak peek of one of his scenes.
- Sophia Bush (Brooke, One Tree Hill) has been cast in Southern Discomfort, an ABC pilot. This DOES NOT mean One Tree Hill is canceled or that Bush is abandoning ship. 1) OTH has not been canceled–or renewed. 2) If OTH is renewed, Bush is contractually obligated to do OTH. 3) She is simply preparing herself for what may be a reality. It’s a smart move.
- Also noteworthy in the short article about the casting is Deadline’s take that OTH has a 50-50 chance at renewal. They also “presume” that it’s OTH versus Life Unexpected, which stars Kerr Smith (Jack, Dawson’s Creek). The Hollywood Reporter says the shows “are considered to be” in competition.
- Joshua Jackson (Pacey, Dawson’s Creek) won a Genie Award for his acting work in the movie One Week. He reportedly mentioned DC in his acceptance speech. He looks adorable in the photo.

13 04 2010RELEVANT QUESTIONSâDONâT READ IF YOU DONâT WANT TO KNOW!!!
âGossip Girlâ pushed me over the edge when Chuck and Blair broke up after he Bass sold her out to his uncle in exchange for a hotel. And now, this is posted on People.com. Is Chuck truly planning on destroying his best friendâs relationship with Serena, or could there be a twist? â Daniela
I did my best to assuage your fears, but this is all exec producer Stephanie Savage would cough up: âItâs âGossip Girlâ! Always expect a twist.â
Do you have any information about the fate of âLife Unexpectedâ? â SVaddicted via Twitter
With the season finale just aired, Season 2 at this point is neither unexpected nor expected. The consensus seems to be that the CW will need to choose between âLUXâ and âOne Tree Hill,â with the latter being more expensive to produce. Also figuring into the decision is how the networkâs assorted pilots shake out. Cross fingers!

12 04 2010- One Tree Hill came in second in Kristin’s Save One Show campaign. Chuck, which is executive produced by Josh Schwartz (executive producer, Gossip Girl; The O.C.) won.
- Even if you didn’t participate in the postcard campaign for One Tree Hill, you can still print out one of the postcards as a keepsake.
- The first video featuring the winners of The CW’s One Tree Hill contest has been released. It’s pretty cute. I am ridiculously jealous.
- The new One Tree Hill Connection podcast has an interview with Joe Davola (executive producer, One Tree Hill).
- Cari Moskow (Patty, One Tree Hill) joined Twitter today after being re-inspired by our interview.
- Chace Crawford (Nate, Gossip Girl) will no longer be starring in Footloose.
- The 33 TV, a news station in Dallas, has a video interview with Crawford and his sister Candice.

- PEOPLE.com and the New York Post have interviews with Zuzanna Szadkowski (Dorota, Gossip Girl).
- MTV has a short interview with Eric Daman (costume designer, Gossip Girl).
- I don’t post these every week but I figured I’d share this time: 90210 had the most DVR growth, percentage wise, in the 18-49 demographic than any other network show during the week of March 22. Gossip Girl ranked fourth. (It’s noteworthy, for One Tree Hill renewal/cancellation purposes, that Melrose Place ranked second.) The CW sent out a press release with all the numbers.
- Laura Leighton (Sophie, Beverly Hills 90210) will return to Melrose Place tomorrow night for the season finale.
- Time Out New York Kids has an interview with Jennie Garth (Kelly, Beverly Hills 90210), which includes a (totally legitimate but late, IMO) dig at 90210.
- The Bannen Way, which features Vanessa Marcil (Gina, Beverly Hills 90210) and Autumn Reeser (Taylor, The O.C.), won several awards at The Streamys.
- An article on Life Unexpected, which stars Kerr Smith (Jack, Dawson’s Creek), has nice references to both DC and Beverly Hills 90210.
- BlackBook has an interview with Smith, with a little bit of DC talk and a Gossip Girl mention.
- Busy Philipps (Audrey, Dawson’s Creek) spoke a little about James Van Der Beek (Dawson, Dawson’s Creek) to E! Online.
